Usually in the US, the 'smarter' your look, the more menial your role is assumed to be

Seriously? All the Walll Street bankers and White Shoe firm lawyers must have missed your memo.

Not sure how they are dressing at the moment but a lawyer friend was just in manhattan to file a brief and was blown away by how casually everyone in the courthouse was dressed. Not a tie in sight, no more business cards, no more brief cases

Met with my own financial advisor, who always wore suits or at least a jacket in the past, and he had on slacks and an unbuttoned collared shirt with air Jordans. Said he almost never wears a suit now.

I find this image mind blowing.

Has he got a little green man on his wrist band? 🛸

That’s way casual than the uk. I know in general we’ve started to dress up far less. Dh used to wear expensive suits and ties (we weren’t in the uk so unless he wanted to wear a cheap suit, he ended up wearing Hugo boss, Givenchy etc). Now back in the UK and since changing companies, he wears M&S jeans as they’re comfortable and a company branded polo shirt.

I meant to say, he’s obviously company based but I believe for court, you are expected to dress more formally. Dh and I consulted a lawyer perhaps 5 years ago and they were all wearing suits etc.

MaturingCheeseball · 22/05/2024 08:55

Very disappointing in NY - what happened to Working Girl? Big hair, smart suits, trainers…. Grin

Serenster · 22/05/2024 09:49

Can confirm that everyone is still dressed formally to attend the Royal Courts of Justice in London. 😀

No briefcases or business cards any longer though in standard day to day meetings - but they went out of favour many years ago now. My last two jobs, I’ve never had business cards! I don’t have a phone on my desk either, and haven’t for 7-8 years now I guess?

Serenster · 22/05/2024 09:51

This tweet was posted earlier this week actually to demonstrate another point entirely - but you can see what I mean about suits still being worn (you can’t see the ties, but they are there too).

My last two jobs, I’ve never had business cards!

For practical purposes, how do you ensure that people have your name correctly, and your contact details, if you don't have a card to give them?

I am not sure how things were over here for attorneys pre-covid but the guy telling the story was very surprised.

In my field, I have been surprised at how casually some big firm consultants dress on client visits. And it’s true the younger ones were dressed more formally.

You Bluetooth via phone contacts.

Also, inevitably you are meeting via a diary appointment in Outlook, so you will have their email address.

BemusedAmerican · 22/05/2024 13:39

I don't work near courts so don't know how they dress. My coworkers and the people that I see on the subway or commuter rail wear business casual. Most people that I see wear sneakers or flats and carry backpacks or sling bags. I also work in an area with lots of creatives, which affects what I see at work. Dress has gotten much more casual since COVID.

Serenster · 22/05/2024 15:56

Civil service dress codes in London are very different to the corporate world, though! I imagine the same is true of New York.

CathyorClaire · 22/05/2024 20:36

Dh still wears a tie because his staff have to and he refuses to ask them to do something he won't.

Tie prices have rebounded though since there were dozens to be snapped up at heavy covid related reductions. Seems they're still a thing...

smilesy · 22/05/2024 21:05

I’ve read in lots of places that smarter dressing is making a comeback. People are on the rebound from COVID loungewear. And of course, there are some places where smart dressing will always be de rigeur like courtrooms. It seems disrespectful not to make an effort on those sort of settings 🤷‍♀️

Mummyoflittledragon · 23/05/2024 06:42

@BemusedAmerican
That picture of ‘smart casual’ is on the far end of smart casual for the UK as not all companies will allow jeans in that description. To be on the safe side, Brits may choose to steer clear of denim altogether so I’d say the guy in the chinos is deffo fine. I have linked and article from Glamour Magazine so it’s not going to show a series of women dressed in a white t-shirt and dark jeans. But some people will turn up dressed like this to a smart casual dress code over here. Maybe not in the states? https://www.glamourmagazine.co.uk/article/smart-casual-dress-code-decoded

Here's what to wear if a ‘smart casual’ dress code has you completely puzzled

The DM has a headline today about Meghan’s ‘search for her roots’. No, not in Nigeria - in Malta. I hadn’t heard about that

Serenster · 23/05/2024 09:17

Yes, she got a freebie trip to Malta, paid for by the Malta Tourist Board I think? - to do a photoshoot and article about her Maltese heritage, and have photos taken in Maltese beauty spots.

It was arranged for her by Gina Nelthorpe-Cowne, who was Meghan’s manager tasked with raising her profile in the UK in the years before she met Harry. Gina accompanied her to Malta for the trip.

MummyJ12 · 23/05/2024 09:55

It looks like Air Peace may have been Markled.

It being reported that the UK civil aviation authority have concerns over safety violations at Gatwick, and have filed a report against Air Peace for noncompliance this week. The Nigerian government are now getting involved. The irony of the guy obsessed with safety and security, using an airline that is now being investigated for safety violations…..

Also, the airline is of course using the Sussex trip photos for advertising on SM. Reports are that the Sussexes are less than happy with this and the association, in light of the news coverage regarding the owner of the airline, Allen Onyema being wanted in the US.
They are now wanting to distance themselves and have apparently asked for the posts relating to the visit on SM to be removed, but it’s too late.
