I think it's interesting that the places they have publised visiting are all Commonwealth countries. When William didn't go to Australia for the Women's football final, there was massive outrage that he was an awful sexist arsehole (he's not). I think from a political point of view he was right not to go.

H&M have no such tact, along with declaring the Commonwealth "Empire 2.0". I think Harry in particular is likely to get an easier ride in Commonwealth countries, but my overall impression is that they are cosplaying royalty when all the attention was what they supposedly hated.

DelectableMe · 24/05/2024 07:37

I don't think there's a huge amount of thought going into it. If it'll get them media coverage and money making opportunities out of something, they'll go for it.

EdithWeston · 24/05/2024 07:43

What would the reason be for going to Ghana? Are they connected to Invictus, or anything else to do with either H&M? Has anyone said they are going to be the official host?

I think that Prince William was dead wrong not to attend the World Cup Final in his capacity as President of the FA. But will accept that he was not acting out of misogyny when he also refuses to attend all further ones, for both sexes.

I don’t think there is any thought really. They lap up the attention, particularly with Kate out of action.

I take your point about William however can you imagine the outcry if he had flown to Australia for a football match ?

MaturingCheeseball · 24/05/2024 09:09

The football in Australia was a tricky one. But… losing my feminist hat here… (whispers) women’s football is dull . I have been an avid football fan practically my whole life so I believe my judgy pants are secure. (Disclaimer: this opinion does not apply to all women’s sport by any means.) Sorry! Veering off topic Blush

Interesting, I didn't know that. For some reason, I assumed that standards, were worldwide. Every day is a school day with H&M!

I didn't know it either until told by a friend in the industry, JADS

Then there's the trade in fake parts - look up AOG Technics, which is based in the UK and sold to several major reputable airlines, and consider that if this happened in a highly regulated nation, how much more likely is it in less developed ones

MummyJ12 · 24/05/2024 09:22

I wonder if there will come a point when M&H reach overexposure? If they continue with these faux royal tours, there will come a point when interest will be lost.
They also run the risk of the tours being compared so if they are seen to be saying or doing the same things on every visit, then this will be highlighted and the all important optics will be awful.
We know that Meghan has favourite anecdotes and stories. For example, the letter to P&G about their soap advert. These make her speeches now look less authentic, especially as we now know that they lack accuracy if not truth.
If Meghan also claims to have ancestry in every country they visit then people are really going to start asking more questions.

Finally, the press were very generous and sympathetic to the Nigeria visit. At least initially. This may change if they continue to control the media narrative by taking specific journalists, publications and photographers.

Tlolljs · 24/05/2024 09:32

Perhaps she wants to explore her Ghanaian heritage. I really need to stop thinking about those two its not good for my blood pressure.
They are taking advantage of The Princess of Wales and the King being unwell.

Abouttimeforanamechange · 24/05/2024 09:36

I think that Prince William was dead wrong not to attend the World Cup Final in his capacity as President of the FA.

Maybe the Australians just didn't want him there?
Possibly the Aussie equivalent of RAVEC requires more notice of a royal visit than it was possible to give on that occasion?
And W turning up last minute would have disrupted arrangements for the other VIPs whose attendance was planned. If he was there officially, he'd have had to be given precedence.

And trying to get social media posts removed.

Will wait to see what dodgy freebies they accept, and what unsuitable wardrobe choices M makes next time.

Can she be a Nigerian princess AND a Ghanaian one, or will one have to be renounced? and do they come with money and lots of jools?

Well, there are those who make everything he does wrong. We see that in action all to often. But it would be an immense sign of weakness if potential reaction on SM was a determining factor in how to carry out the duties of a senior representational role such as President of the FA.

It was nearly 60 years since the last time England reached a World Cup Final, so the FA President (whoever at the time) is hardly eating up the airmiles when you look at it in the context of the rarity of the event; plus of course what its importance should have meant.

No outcry in Spain about their RF attending, and AFAIK she's not their FA President. Nor were there any security issues for them (or the other dignitaries in attendance). The tournament hosts know well in advance that Presidents (of the whole country of the finalists, not just their FAs), Prime Ministers, other ministers and royalty (if the country is a monarchy) are likely to travel if their team makes the later stages, and particularly the final; and robust plans will have been in place well in advance.

Sunnyandsilly · 24/05/2024 10:43

I can’t work out what Megan is actually doing with her riviera thing, it’s a couple of months since it was launched, there is nothing there, some jam was sent out, seemingly 50, but only a handful admitted to getting any,

it is incredibly odd to launch a brand when there is nothing, literally nothing behind it, she must have known, it really does look like they did it as William was talking at the Diana awards and it was pure spite to steal his thunder.

but bloody hell what a stupid stupid thing to do. Launch a brand and have nothing to sell or promote. That’s bad. Really bad.

MummyJ12 · 24/05/2024 11:10

Apparently Meghan isn’t happy about the reaction to American Rivera Orchard so far and has been in tears about it all.
She is to go on a PR drive and to give interviews to ‘carefully selected journalists’ according to Tom Quinn.
He also claims that she feels unfairly picked on and can’t understand why people don’t admire her work.

Reported also by Sky News and the New York Post, have linked the Mirror article.

Meghan Markle 'in tears' over 'unfair criticism' of American Riviera Orchard

Meghan Markle announced the launch of her lifestyle brand American Riviera Orchard in March, and is gearing up for when her new business venture finally goes live

AliceOlive · 24/05/2024 11:16

@MummyJ12 I don’t believe that at all.

Sandwichgen · 24/05/2024 11:19

'Admire her work?' Its jam, not a car battery that runs on air

MummyJ12 · 24/05/2024 11:20

I don’t know how journalists claim to know all of this stuff!

I do believe that she can’t have been happy about the jam and the lack of support if it was gifted to 50 recipients.

AliceOlive · 24/05/2024 11:31

It pretty much said he’s guessing at the beginning of the “article”. It’s not in compatible with anything we know about Meghan, though. I mean, she nearly hyperventilated when Mariah Carey called her a diva, but that’s not the same, is it?

MummyJ12 · 24/05/2024 11:45

@AliceOlive We know that she’s sensitive to criticism and that she likes only positive comments and feedback. It’s why they like to have so much control over everything.
Harry has said and written himself that she has a tendency to get upset and tearful when she feels wronged.
ARO jam has been widely mocked and not well received or supported so it doesn’t stretch my imagination that she wouldn’t be happy this and she will be frustrated.
She has a popularity problem and she knows this also. She wants to turn this around as she very much wants to be admired and adored. Most of us have a desire to be well liked. It’s completely natural.
So actually I do believe that there’s some truth in the reporting and there seems to be some leaking from their ‘office’ or camp with all of the comments from a source that are appearing.
Maybe, it’s to garner sympathy and play again to victimhood. We know also that they have form for this. They are also known for selecting their media sources and preferred journalists.

AliceOlive · 24/05/2024 11:58

True, but I don’t imagine her crying over it unless it’s performative.

EdithWeston · 24/05/2024 12:00

That Mirror article is sourced only to a Royal commentator's opinion, and I think it is just speculative bollocks.

That there will be further publicity efforts around the next stage of the launch seems like stating the bleeding obvious!

MummyJ12 · 24/05/2024 12:04

AliceOlive · 24/05/2024 11:58

Totally!

RedRosesPinkLilies · 24/05/2024 12:07

@MummyJ12 I agree with you. I think we all want to be well liked, but I think most of us also realise that not everyone will like us - and that’s just how things are. I don’t like everyone I know, but I’m sure their decent people
Meghan and Harry seem to take no responsibility for the reasons people might not like them. Unending adulation, whatever their own behaviour, seems to be the expectation

Thedom · 24/05/2024 12:34

According to People Magazine, their go to for PR, it is to be launched in Spring, so still a few weeks to go if that timeframe is correct.

MummyJ12 · 24/05/2024 12:44

In the US, the National Enquirer have run an article along the same lines but are even more savage. (20th May).
Again, this could just be more ‘speculative bollocks’ as you so beautifully put it @EdithWeston 😆
