To continue the discussion.

I thought the comparison with the Duke snd Duchess of Windsor (last post on the previous thread) was interesting.

A visit to a dodgy regime, (Nazi Germany) because they would call Wallis HRH and make it a quasi-royal tour.

Of course, at that point Nazi Germany had a dodgy human rights record, but it was before the horrors of the Holocaust.

Let's face it, with the security and human rights issues there is no way the IG could happen in Nigeria. So that is sn excuse.

I read somewhere that it is Harry rather than Meghan who wants to keep them out of the public eye - I think he's just being a protective dad, that's all.

It should be fairly easy to keep the children out of the public eye because I don’t know anyone who is remotely interested in them. It’s possibly inconceivable to Meghan that her children are not of huge public interest but they aren’t. The same with Beatrice and Eugenie’s children. In the nicest way, who cares?

Edited to add there is an article in you know where that she is admitting to missing A and L but felt it was important to be in the motherland on US Mother’s Day. Talk about spin. Doesn’t change a thing, she’s there, they aren’t.

aparagonofvirtueanddecorummyarse · 13/05/2024 08:49

I do like the fact that they keep the kids out of the public eye.

It is, quite possibly, the only commendable thing they’ve done.

Important to be in the ‘motherland’ my arse.

Spinning more than Pete Burns.

queenofarles · 13/05/2024 08:50

This whole thing doesn’t sit well with me , don’t think this visit brings anything to Nigeria , once again they were wonderful hosts and put out all the stops , But this was strictly a feel good tour for H&M, who both suffer from white Saviorism, they constantly need to tell people to be brave and and strong while talking about their own personal challenges. Really?

And Meghan Announcing she’s half Nigerian like it’s some sort of great asset to Nigeria .

from first hand accounts I know that Nigeria is oil rich country who is open to business and is working to attract foreign investments , yet this tour put the country in a negative light for a Netflix documentary.

That is on Nigeria though; they invited H&M. It is likely it was never about international standing but rather about internal politics and power-plays. That is why the government has to be so careful with foreign visits and why royal tours will be preceded by months of careful negotiation. It probably hasn’t even crossed H&M mind that they may be potentially supporting very malign political manoeuvering in a tour carefully orchestrated by their hosts to embed their power.

"Nigeria" didn't invite them though. Someone senior in the military did. The government was not involved, and the Nigerian military and government are often at odds. So I agree that this was likely about internal power plays which the Sussexes really should not be getting into. We know this was not a royal tour at all, but clearly they were trying to pretend otherwise, by using their royal titles, getting a military salute and so on.

I do think this is desperation on their part. They really wanted to hold on to all the 'glamorous' parts of royal life. I also think it's no accident that a country notorious for corruption was their destination. NZ or Australia is unlikely to host a Sussex 'royal' tour any time soon.

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 13/05/2024 09:17

She's been going on about how she is 'with family' in Nigeria. In that case, Nigeria is unlikely to see her again, given her track record with families.

Edited for typos.

Thanks to @queenofarles @IcedPurple and @Sloejelly for saying what I’m thinking.

This has the potential to be their biggest mistake.

Absolutely this. Plus they are well aware that the Waleses will not be doing any visits in the foreseeable future so they have rather cynically taken advantage of this fact imo.

Also with regard to the reports in The Telegraph that Harry was in fact offered a royal palace to stay in whilst in London, I wonder if he didn’t because he wouldn’t have been able to be with a film crew?

Seconded.

I'd like to add a question about what the US Security Services are making of this, and whether they will be looking closer at the activities of these two. There's no such thing as a free lunch, and Nigeria has a reputation for huge corruption, as well as connections with hostile states. H&M are too greedy and vainglorious to understand they are dancing with the devil.

Still, it will be good to hold MM accountable for the continuing human rights atrocities in that country, now that she's bona fide royalty and all. After all, what did she say?....Silence is complicity.

Regarding the children, nothing wrong with keeping them out of the public eye but makes them having titles even more ridiculous surely. Why are 2 American kids who will likely never set foot in the UK again during their childhood, and nobody even knows what they look like, Prince and Princess of the UK? Ridiculous.

Yet, not one source, or ‘friend’ or ‘Kings Men’ are willing to put their name to this article.

So is this the palace leaking what they want us to know/think?

Or is it just made up?

BigWillyLittleTodger · 13/05/2024 10:02

It is utterly ridiculous and they will be in the public eye at some point when they can be monetised, didn’t they trademark Lilibet’s closet? Hopefully William will show some balls when he is King and do a Daisy and change letters patent.

There were no names linked to Harry saying that the King was too busy to see him either though. Just a “spokesperson”.

ha! King not Long

The petulant, sulky, un-provoked and entirely unnecessary little missive from Harry that Pa is too busy to see him came from a "spokesperson". Care to name that person?

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar · 13/05/2024 10:13

Ah, @smilesy got there first. But perhaps more than one of us need to point out these constant double standards over "leaking".

It's just so arrogant. I've decided Nigeria is "my country" and aren't you all lucky that you get me as a role model? I'm sure there are plenty of actual Nigerian women that kids can look up to.

Thedom · 13/05/2024 10:33

Reportedly they were paid a million dollar fee for the trip, no wonder she was happy to call it the 'motherland' and for H to call them 'his inlaws'. Sounds like they may have found an income stream in Nigeria.

I do feel a bit of sympathy for those who have been positively basking in the afterglow of H&Ms' visit for what has turned out to be a paid celeb attendance fee.

Did H&M ask for the above though? The red carpet, the playing of the National Anthem? My thoughts are that it was Nigeria bigging up the tour for various reasons purely relevant to them. Harry looked fairly uncomfortable at times and Meghan's fixed grimace spoke volumes.

I think H&M wanted it to be grand, a celebrity tour, to showcase new frocks and word salad about belonging and not being OK etc etc, but I'm not laying the quasi-royal stuff at their door.
