To continue the discussion.

I thought the comparison with the Duke snd Duchess of Windsor (last post on the previous thread) was interesting.

A visit to a dodgy regime, (Nazi Germany) because they would call Wallis HRH and make it a quasi-royal tour.

Of course, at that point Nazi Germany had a dodgy human rights record, but it was before the horrors of the Holocaust.

Let's face it, with the security and human rights issues there is no way the IG could happen in Nigeria. So that is sn excuse.

Didn’t Harry make some comment about William being bald? He looks to me he needs to accept he’s going the same way and shave it off, I saw some very unflattering angles of his head.

He just doesn't seem to have any self awareness at all....slagging off his brother's baldness when he in fact is also going bald...so petty.

jeffgoldblum · 13/05/2024 13:05

I'm of the opinion that he hasn't realised how bald he is !!!
How often do you see the back of your head!
Not like Meghan is going to say " hey hazza you look like a pickled egg from behind " 🤣🤣

IMO, the main purpose for that dig, written in Spare, was to be able to say that William was no longer like Diana - he had her blonde hair, and was famously always compared with being her incarnation in both looks, mannerisms and legacy. I think he used hair as a metaphor for his own feelings. Both that William was his "mummy" substitute and was no longer willing or able to do this; and also in Harry's desire to erase William from the narrative he has created about Diana, and his wish to keep her legacy as a mother, and the tragedy surrounding her children and her death, all to himself.

William's baldness is more obvious as it's at the front of his head.

Harry's not as far along as his brother, but he's fast approaching Friar Tuck territory.

I don’t understand why posters say how dreadful the British press are to Meghan, most media posts are falling over themselves to be the most nauseating, at the moment she is apparently‘Presidential’ 🙄

Ted Danson went the same way. Took a long time for his front to catch up with his back, so to speak.

jeffgoldblum · 13/05/2024 13:23

@Ohpleeeease , I know !! It's probably a real horror for them isn't it!
Youngish from the front , oldish from the back !!

In US all I’ve seen about this trip is about “style” both Nigerian style and Meghan’s own clothing. NYTimes hasn’t even mentioned the trip as of yesterday when I searched.

GlitchStitch · 13/05/2024 13:58

There are screenshots online of apparent California charity listings saying Archewell is currently delinquent in its legal requirements. Does anyone know anything about this? Not sure if it's genuine.

Yeah, it’s just paperwork and it’s common. Not a huge deal yet. Don’t ask me how I know. 🤣

They were invited by the military and guarded by the military. The Nigerian federal government had no involvement in this trip. And it shows.

Has there been a coup in Nigeria?

Eh?

ajandjjmum · 13/05/2024 14:15

I think @Sloejelly is implying/suggesting/questioning that the military are in charge, not the Government.

JSMill · 13/05/2024 14:19

There have been a couple of coups and long periods of time when the military ruled but the current government is a civilian democratically elected one.

Sloejelly · 13/05/2024 14:20

IcedPurple · 13/05/2024 14:03

Eh?

Unless there was a coup then the armed forces are an arm of the government. If such a high profile trip was arrange and run without any involvement of government, then that would suggest if not a threatened coup d’etat then at least an attempt at the consolidation of political power by military leaders.

Sloejelly · 13/05/2024 14:24

The military may be hosting the trip, but that is very different from saying the government has no involvement in it.

TripleDaisySummer · 13/05/2024 14:24

There have been 5 coups since independence in 1960s and decades were government was run by the military- they became democratic in 1999.

I image that makes it a very different relationship to long established western democracies have with their military.

I don't know enough about Nigerian politics to know how much ability federal government had to say no to military invite - whether they were tacit approving, indifferent to a non state visit or excited.

Not really.

I'm no expert on Nigeria, but as I said, it's well known that the military and government often have different agendas. There is no evidence at all of any involvement from the federal government. The 'announcement' was from the army Chief of Staff, who is free to invite whomever he wishes on an informal vist. This was not an official visit of any sort. It's no different to him inviting a C list celebrity. Of course he would not be able to invite a working royal without government cooperation, but the Sussexes have no official role, so it's an entirely different scenario.
