To continue the discussion.

I thought the comparison with the Duke snd Duchess of Windsor (last post on the previous thread) was interesting.

A visit to a dodgy regime, (Nazi Germany) because they would call Wallis HRH and make it a quasi-royal tour.

Of course, at that point Nazi Germany had a dodgy human rights record, but it was before the horrors of the Holocaust.

Let's face it, with the security and human rights issues there is no way the IG could happen in Nigeria. So that is sn excuse.

Is this what happens when you get an email from a Nigerian prince with an offer you cannot refuse, and you actually follow up on it? Who knew!

IcedPurple · 13/05/2024 10:54

Did H&M ask for the above though? The red carpet, the playing of the National Anthem? My thoughts are that it was Nigeria bigging up the tour for various reasons purely relevant to them.

What do you mean by 'Nigeria'? As I said above, the Nigerian government had nothing to do with this trip.

As for the Sussexes, we're talking about people who have a 'Sussex royal' doormat, who use their royal titles even when completely irrelevant and even ridiculous, and who have an empty website purporting to belong to 'The Office of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.' Clearly they are desperate to cling on to the remnants of their royal status. So yes, I would bet that they wanted all the pseudo royal trappings.

Reportedly they were paid a million dollar fee for the trip, no wonder she was happy to call it the 'motherland' and for H to call them 'his inlaws'. Sounds like they may have found an income stream in Nigeria.

I do feel a bit of sympathy for those who have been positively basking in the afterglow of H&Ms' visit for what has turned out to be a paid celeb attendance fee.

Where is your evidence this is true, or are you just spouting crap hoping it will stick enough that it becomes true and people just continue their negative toxic comments about them

Thedom · 13/05/2024 11:01

Babybreath · 13/05/2024 10:50

@Thedom where has that been reported? They really are going to end up in hot water aren't they?

It's all over Social Media, I think the chances are that it is true.

I imagine whoever negotiated the fee, also negotiated the events and the logistics and planned them with the Nigerian military, I don't think any of that would have been unwanted by them nor a surprise to them.

I will just add to Iced's excellent post that H&M are either private citizens or they aren't. They are either "living their best lives" as we are continually being told, are free of royal shackles and in control of their own destinies, or they aren't. This was a private visit THEY arranged, not the men in grey or the diplomats. If they didn't want the royal stuff, there would have been no diplomatic fall out of them saying no, we don't want it, and making this very clear in advance of the visit. This is a PR fail on their part if they didn't want these things. They have made themselves look very foolish and amateur if that is indeed the case.

It's being reported that the Nigerian government is paying for the security, if they didn't invite them why would they do this? Optics I guess.

They were invited by the military and guarded by the military. The Nigerian federal government had no involvement in this trip. And it shows.

notimagain · 13/05/2024 11:10

..the Nigerian government had nothing to do with this trip.

At the actual national level, maybe, but one of, if not the first event yesterday AM was reportedly a reception at the State Governor’s House in Lagos so I think the civil/mil lines have become a bit blurred at times - almost inevitable in that part of the world.

YaMuvva · 13/05/2024 11:10

I have a new found appreciation of the organisation of an actual Royal Tour. A lot from the Nigeria trip seems like the brief was “wing it” and from the videos it seemed a little chaotic. The proper tours must be planned out to the nansecond!

peanutbuttertoasty · 13/05/2024 11:13

I mean, being the guests of another country’s military (and not their government) sounds fucking dodgy doesn’t it? Is that how militaries normally operate? Not sure how these things work but it sounds odd?

Nigeria is a federal republic so the state governors have a lot of autonomy. My point remains that the federal government had nothing to do with this trip. I think it's a very important distinction.

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar · 13/05/2024 11:15

A million quid on security for a mutual back-slapping visit between elites, and an appeal to the West to send their girls sanitary products. You couldn't make it up.

queenofarles · 13/05/2024 11:16

They really sometimes make no sense with their choices , anyone remembers the out of no where trip to Marrakesh while they were still part of RF ? Which was later stated as being a private one?

Or their visit to Canada house to thank them for their generosity in hosting them?
Why? Why?

I work in the media, and it depends.

When Blair would visit Iraq he was invited by the British Army and no permission was sought from the Iraqis.

But they were in an invaded country. In a ‘normal’ country where the Army and government were not at each others throats, the Army would normally invite delegates with Government approval and joint planning.

For countries where the Army and Government are at odds - I have no idea! I suppose the Army can ask whoever they like to visit but the problem is if it went tots up the government could justifiably wash their hands of it

Then we disagree - you think they actually requested the National Anthem and the red carpet? Oh, and I don't think I mentioned the Government 🤔

Thedom · 13/05/2024 11:22

@Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar

The million quid was their personal fee.

The cost of running the show was covered by someone else, the Nigerian military, Invictus, a Nigerian benefactor. It's not totally clear how the rest was paid for or who exactly covered the costs.

I don’t think they necessarily requested the anthem, but they could have made it clear beforehand that it was not required (and was in fact inappropriate as Harry was not representing the crown or the UK). Your use of the word “Nigeria” tends to suggest that they were invited by the government of the country. You wore not normally refer to the military as “Nigeria”

Well if they didn't, then they have only themselves to blame for not organising their visit in accordance with the optics they wanted. PR fail ALL on the Sussexes and their PR team for this private visit they were wholly in control of negotiating.
