To continue the discussion.

I thought the comparison with the Duke snd Duchess of Windsor (last post on the previous thread) was interesting.

A visit to a dodgy regime, (Nazi Germany) because they would call Wallis HRH and make it a quasi-royal tour.

Of course, at that point Nazi Germany had a dodgy human rights record, but it was before the horrors of the Holocaust.

Let's face it, with the security and human rights issues there is no way the IG could happen in Nigeria. So that is sn excuse.

Good point!

I reckon most Nigerians are aware that both Harry and Meghan were raised Christians in Christian-majority countries

Yes and we all know that “adaptation” in the context of the RF means, conform, behave, stick to protocol, keep quiet, don’t voice opinions, don’t get fat, smile at every opportunity, put up with nonsense from the men in grey suits, other family members, the press, and put up with having your income and living situation controlled by your father-in-law, then your brother-in-law …

… not a particularly attractive prospect tbh.

Maybe not when you put it like that. But there are also massive privileges to being royal, privileges which Meghan could never have come close to earning on her own merits and which, as this 'tour' shows, she is still quite desperate to cling on to. It's not like she's achieved great things in the 4 years since Finding Freedom, despite all the money, wealth and prestige she gained from being royal.

All jobs and lifestyles have their good and bad points. As for 'voicing opinions' has Meghan ever voiced an articulate or original opinion on anything other than herself?

Are most Nigerians aware? I'm not sure most Nigerians even know who H&M are tbh. In any case, it's culturally completely insensitive to showcase a massive crucifix when visiting a country with a substantial Muslim population in a quasi official style. Meghan aligned herself with the 48% here. I think it's an interesting choice. Unless it's not a choice and was just thoughtless.

BemusedAmerican · 12/05/2024 17:25

If you look at the cross, it appears to be upside down. I initially thought it was me viewing it incorrectly, but others have commented. She would have been better off wearing a normal cross or a locket with photos of her two children.

Wow @queenofarles !
That's some interesting facts! Are you a history buff ?
I'm always interested in learning more about these topics 👍

Indeed African History is very interesting , The Whole west African slave trade in particular is written from a single western perspective .

Africans who were brought to the US were depicted as Wild , illiterate and uncultured, but in reality a not so small percentage of them were in fact educated and could read and write , they were people with history and culture, they received traditional studies in various educational establishment in Mali , Senegal, Ghana But none of that made any difference to either the agents who captured them or to the people who bought them <sorry for the word> .

jeffgoldblum · 12/05/2024 17:32

Thanks @queenofarles that's fascinating ( sorry wrong word?)
I love history but mostly ancient history but not really learnt much about this area and being from the U.K. it's not something that's spoken about often.

That would make it the cross of St Peter (he was crucified upside down). Though the internet will love that it’s these days apparently a satanic symbol!!

@peanutbuttertoasty in the US, it definitely has Satanic connotations. A really bad visual.

YaMuvva · 12/05/2024 17:44

This tour has actually really pissed me off.

They have brought Hollywood standards and rhetoric to a very different country.

In her speech in the red dress Meghan has apparently realised being a Nigerian woman means being “powerful”. I wonder if she knows that half of Nigerian girls are married off before they are adults and 16% before they’re 15. Or that gender based violence is still shockingly high, or that 6 million girls don’t go to school, or that literacy rates for adult women are only at 60%, Or that only 6% of politicians are female. Powerful my arse. These Hollywood Insta-quotes are all well and good for first world problems when all a girl needs is a bit of confidence but not in a country where women are so discriminated against on every level.

ToCoffeeOrNorNotToCoffee · 12/05/2024 16:28

Not sure I can see the issue. So Russia and China want a piece of Nigeria. What exactly are they after? And why does it present a problem if H&M cosy up with Nigeria? It looks all wrong but I don't think I am informed enough to understand the implications.

And why are the British media reporting it in a quasi royal style? Celebrating Meghan, isn't that a bit of a u-turn?

Russia and China are seeking to exert their influence in many areas of Africa, including Nigeria. They are seeking to control the natural resources of these countries, many of which are used in the tech industry. Russian have inserted their mercenary forces and perpetuated civil wars. Neither Russia or China are know for their exemplary civil rights issues and have no thought for the civilian populations. As pp have said, they seek destabilisation of western countries and to undermine democracy. The Nigerian military have direct links to Russia. Russia supplies arms to and trains the Nigerian military. As Harry is a member of the British RF, his apparent endorsement of the Nigerian military risks being used as propaganda and twisted to imply that the British RF is endorsing it also. This is why international visits are usually instigated by governments who understand the
political landscape

YaMuvva · 12/05/2024 17:45

BemusedAmerican · 12/05/2024 16:53

@ToCoffeeOrNorNotToCoffee to start, they are trying to create division between the US and the UK, long-term allies. Each country is trying not to be associated with them.

They are also trying to destabilize the UK government. In addition to the Sussex Squad, Russia was fueling the horrible rumors about W & K with paid bots.

The UK government had to publicly announce H & M weren't official representatives to cover themselves. Smart move on their part.

As an American, I felt myself cringing at Meghan blatantly ignoring cultural norms and looking like an ugly American. I can't believe Harry was sitting on a throne on red carpets. I also agree that playing the American anthem would have been more appropriate for an American citizen and an American resident but I personally happy the US isn't being blamed for the visit.

Whilst I agree with so much of your post one can hardly call Meghan ugly!

Thank you for these insights @smilesy its very interesting and I didn’t know this before!

MrsLeonFarrell · 12/05/2024 17:55

Despite the anthem being played (and The Mail trolling for clicks) I don't think this has come across as a royal tour at all. It is definitely celebrity do-gooding (and I don't mean that is a negative sense) in what they are doing and how they are doing it. It's particularly clear in the speeches which are all about them rather than the peeler they are meeting. You could drop any Hollywood celebrity in these photos and they would look and sound the same. I hope the charities involved get a boost in donations.

YaMuvva · 12/05/2024 17:56

I mean if they raise awareness and get donations in for Nigerian charities and causes then it hasn’t been a fail.
Im not convinced their ‘squaddies’ will be the ones to fork out however because there’s no opportunity to hate on Kate, which is what the squaddies are really about

MacavitytheMystery · 12/05/2024 16:57

It is really well past time Charles stripped them of their titles. It’s the only way to stop this nonsense.

I was wondering if this trip would encourage him to make the decision faster.

notimagain · 12/05/2024 18:00

I hope the charities involved get a boost in donations.

It might help local charities but I can’t see it doing much for donations to the IG until there’s a bit more visibility around costs and expenses.

I mentioned way back that that the airfares alone for this jaunt must have cost somebody well into 5 figures Sterling/Dollars.

aparagonofvirtueanddecorummyarse · 12/05/2024 18:01

She is certainly not ugly.

But my goodness, she isn’t nearly as beautiful as the Nigerian women she is in amongst.

I daresay that would have been hotly disputed when she first became known. Even only 5years ago say.

But I’ve seen cheddar age better. She maybe wants to chum up someone for food preservative rather than whatever else she is putting on (or into?) her face.

The change is what could only be described as remarkable.

And not a complimentary remarkable either.

I wondered if she’s using Botox. Her face looks completely different, and not for the better.

aparagonofvirtueanddecorummyarse · 12/05/2024 18:09

Thank you bemused - every day is a school day!

I’m still one who believes you can have a pretty shell but an ugly rotten core.

And sometimes it just shines through.

garlicandsapphires · 12/05/2024 18:12

Her face looks harder. Especially with the big brows. I think it’s the weight loss.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 12/05/2024 18:15

Where are you seeing the outfits please?

This is quite shocking. I find Meghan body language incredibly affected and show-offy but maybe it's the Californian way. She just does not come across as sincere, she wants to be admired. Saying that, Victoria Beckham has a similar way of moving, acting like a super star 😂and both women have had tons of cosmetic work done. Not a look I like.

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar · 12/05/2024 18:20

She's wearing a frock at a polo match now similar to the one she wore at the match the other week. Back to beige and backless.

ToCoffeeOrNorNotToCoffee · 12/05/2024 18:23

I didn't know there was a term for it. It sounds quite crass but this is exactly what I mean.
