To continue the discussion.

I thought the comparison with the Duke snd Duchess of Windsor (last post on the previous thread) was interesting.

A visit to a dodgy regime, (Nazi Germany) because they would call Wallis HRH and make it a quasi-royal tour.

Of course, at that point Nazi Germany had a dodgy human rights record, but it was before the horrors of the Holocaust.

Let's face it, with the security and human rights issues there is no way the IG could happen in Nigeria. So that is sn excuse.

I haven’t seen anything from them as yet advocating for any kind of change. I would love to be proven wrong but so far it just seems to be monologues about mental health, which, as important as the issue of good mental health is, it does not address the inequalities, prejudice and brutality in that country.

Pollipops1 · 10/05/2024 21:42

Well my question was if an official visit can bring about change why can’t a personal one?

aparagonofvirtueanddecorummyarse · 10/05/2024 21:42

I honestly don’t think that they are there to bring about change.

I’d be genuinely delighted if they did though.

Official Royal family visits aren’t aimed at bringing about change. They are furthering the Foreign Office’s international relations strategy. Clearly, that’s not what Meghan and Harry are doing.

ZellyFitzgerald · 10/05/2024 21:45

This visit will cost a lot whether Harry and Meghan realise it or not. There's no such thing as a free lunch, after all!

The Ministry of Defence in Nigeria aren't hosting them to be kind or to promote mental health. They will want something in return, whether it comes up now or later, this visit will have to be repaid in some way.

Invictus will suffer in this and it proves why the Queen was against this model.

The best thing the royal family can do right now is distance themselves from H & M and Invictus which is a shame for the veterans.

I am with you zelly

There is nowt for nowt in this world.

There seems to be something a bit off with it all.

Pollipops1 · 10/05/2024 21:49

I thought one of the reasons for the trip was to visit injured soldiers & promote Invictus? It’s my understanding that disability eg lost limbs can be a social stigma in Nigeria. Perhaps Invictus will help some of those soldiers & in the future there will be less stigma.

Pollipops1 · 10/05/2024 21:53

@Serenster Im not sure why you are replying to me telling me that
Official Royal family visits aren’t aimed at bringing about change?

I was responding to another poster who said the below?

“I can understand how an official visit may engineer change. Not so much a personal visit”

Obviously you can disagree with them but a bit weird to answer on their behalf.

Weirder to address a question to a different poster entirely without warning in the middle of an exchange between two posters, but you do you!

When you want a job doing. Get Princess Anne in.
You’re absolutely right there @Blinkeredsoul34 she’s a great ambassador for us and certainly doesn’t shy away from important issues that need addressing.

On the other hand, it seems that the Nigeria tour isn’t quite as altruistic.

We can't see the rear of Anne's suit. Is it backless or have a thin back strap?

GoldThumb · 10/05/2024 22:05

There’s a video on TwiX where a lady is speaking to her, and while the lady is mid sentence, Meghan just turns her back and drags Harry off.
There’s also a little girl holding something out on a tray, and they both look dejected.
Really bad

Not really, I thought you were the same poster… It’s only when you “contradicted” yourself I realised you were a completely different poster.

Pollipops1 · 10/05/2024 22:10

I’m intrigued to know what warning I should have given though! A klaxon? How would you hear that? A cat gif? They seem to cover most bases.

I can’t believe she did that.

I saw that too. She has no interest in anyone but herself.

Why are they always holding hands?

OneHeartySnail · 10/05/2024 22:15

IsoldeWagner · 10/05/2024 22:14

Why are they always holding hands?

Because Harry was the only one of his family to marry for love, to be able to have side by side desks to work etc etc

Right, so it was your mistake, but you’re calling me out for it?

Given what we have seen so far, how do you think this visit will achieve this aim? Alternatively do you think the money spent on this trip might have been better spent directly helping injured veterans?

Right, it's to do with desks. Makes sense.
