To continue the discussion.

I thought the comparison with the Duke snd Duchess of Windsor (last post on the previous thread) was interesting.

A visit to a dodgy regime, (Nazi Germany) because they would call Wallis HRH and make it a quasi-royal tour.

Of course, at that point Nazi Germany had a dodgy human rights record, but it was before the horrors of the Holocaust.

Let's face it, with the security and human rights issues there is no way the IG could happen in Nigeria. So that is sn excuse.

I think I have made my opinion of the dress clear, Im not sure what else I can say. You can carry on critiquing it if you want 🤷🏻‍♀️

needs to work on her ‘gift opening’ face too 😂😂😂 #hatesit!

"It's lovely! No, really - it's adorable.
Do you have that quaint custom of a 'gift receipt' here?"

MummyJ12 · 10/05/2024 20:42

I see that they have taken Misan Harriman with them and a journalist from People magazine.

Is that all? Netflix as well, I'm guessing?
No Omid Scobie?

All the photos with Harry and Meghan watching Nigerians performing in front of them look dreadfully colonial. They are too funny, H&M, little self awareness or even media awareness.

Edited

Really? Perhaps they should take lessons from William and Kate.

Why bring the Prince and Princess of Wales into this? If it was the other way around, posters would rightly be calling it out.
They were there for the right reasons at least.

He seems out of the loop. Is suspiciously quiet (yet still fawning). Just reposting as he doesn’t have any information for posts. Interesting!

Blinkeredsoul34 · 10/05/2024 21:03

Well this thread is really showing Mumsnet in a good light! Twenty or so posts criticising Meghan’s dress!

Why does everyone care so much? The dress seems fine to me and appropriately cool in 33 °c heat. It hits the spot between not too casual and not too dressy and it certainly does not warrant all of this nasty nit-picking.

How would you all like it if there were twenty public posts written about your appearance and dress sense?

Honestly, I didn’t have many opinions about H & M before, but these threads and these endless criticisms are making me realise they had a point.

You want to head to the style and beauty board and see what they said about my trainers! 😂😂 (well I like them!)

Why on earth do you think Meghan has chosen to accompany Harry to a country where she must deeply disagree with its stance on homosexuality and abortion rights? Remember she refused to stay at any property owned by the Sultan of Brunei because the same laws apply in Brunei. And yet here she is. Attention for what she is wearing is exactly the reason she is in Nigeria…

MummyJ12 · 10/05/2024 21:18

Exactly @Serenster. Meghan apparently wouldn’t stay in a hotel because they kept a bird in a cage. For someone so principled and opinionated, she is staying very silent on the issues of this host country.

aparagonofvirtueanddecorummyarse · 10/05/2024 21:19

I wondering if it is easier to have your attire critiqued rather than discussing the silence regarding your husband’s recollection and dismissal of the racism you alluded to, bullying allegations, African Parks and your husband’s uncle.

Let alone choosing to make a personal visit to a country which does not align with your principles.

No response about the nasty attacks here on Mumsnet focusing on Meghan’s attire Serenster?

To answer your question though , I read on the Sky News website Nigeria that Prince Harry and Meghan are on a visit to Nigeria,

”to champion mental health for young people affected by conflicts and to promote the Invictus Games”

Princess Anne has visited plenty of countries on behalf of the Red Cross where the political regimes were corrupt and where homosexuality was frowned upon or illegal and where women’s rights were virtually non-existent.

Surely that is the point of these visits, to exchange viewpoints and expertise and offer support to those trying to bring about change?

aparagonofvirtueanddecorummyarse · 10/05/2024 21:24

I understand your point but this is not an official visit and they do not represent anyone other than themselves.

I can understand how an official visit may engineer change. Not so much a personal visit.

Serenster · 10/05/2024 21:28

I think you have the Red Cross and Save the Children confused? Anne’s been patron of Save the Children for nearly 55 years and has visited most of its projects. The organisation has helped 45 million children across the world get the medicine, good food and education they need. Anne’s visits were to the project, not supporting the regime involved, quite unlike Meghan and Harry who are guests of the Nigerian Ministry of Defence. Also, Meghan has no role in Invictus.

MummyJ12 · 10/05/2024 21:29

When you want a job doing. Get Princess Anne in.
You’re absolutely right there @Blinkeredsoul34 she’s a great ambassador for us and certainly doesn’t shy away from important issues that need addressing.

On the other hand, it seems that the Nigeria tour isn’t quite as altruistic.

Are you suggesting that Meghan and Harry visiting Nigeria will mean homesexuality will be decriminalised there?

Pollipops1 · 10/05/2024 21:35

Are you suggesting that change can only be measured by decriminalising homosexuality?

Serenster · 10/05/2024 21:38

Pollipops1 · 10/05/2024 21:35

Well, what kind of change do you have in mind?

Just a reminder, Meghan had previously told her manager that she would never stay at the Dorchester or any other hotel the Sultan of Brunei’s family owned because of her immense disapproval of Brunei’s stance on homosexuality and women’s abortion rights. I presume if she thinks a visit to Nigeria is justified on the basis it’s an opportunity to effect a social change, she has more in mind than mental health initiatives at a single school in Abuja?
