If she's having chemo I presume it could be many months before we see her. Poor woman.

I guess in Catherine's case what I mean is that she always presents herself so perfectly that any deviation from that will draw the trolls.

The thing about trolls is that it doesn't matter how their victim presents themself - there'll always be something and if there isn't, the troll will manufacture it. They share a great deal of characteristics with emotional abusers and plain old fashioned bullies - which is what they are. They're just not in a close personal relationship with their victim.

IsoldeWagner · 09/06/2024 10:26

Some people on here didn't even believe that, and started many threads to that effect.

OliviaBean · 09/06/2024 10:27

It's almost like the trolls are being let decide the rules. They should be called out, all the time. It's almost like hate speech, they should be banned of the social media platforms. Clearly they've mental health issues.

IsoldeWagner · 09/06/2024 10:29

It is hate speech. The genie is out of the bottle.

That's like swatting flies. Even on here. They're not interested in what you have to say, they just spill whatever currently obsesses their little minds, disappear, name change and come back. They're really best ignored as far as possible.

I don't think anyone would give you an argument on most of that.
I would argue that I think "mental health issues" are thrown around far too easily. Imo, some people are just nasty, bored, jealous, whatever and are hitting out. I also think some have perfectly sane, if very unpleasant, actual motives.
I suspect some are bots.

Do you think trolls aren't "called out"?
What can the average poster on MN do? You mustn't troll hunt, so you can report posts - sometimes they'll be removed, sometimes not.
Afaics, it's rare people are banned. And if one is cut down, it seems several may spring up in their place.

I appreciate you say you know very little about social media. Nor do I - I only post here.
But even so, I've thought exactly what your post says and so has practically everyone who posts anywhere on SM, I should think.
Are you really so naive as to think that's a new opinion?
And, if there has to be a sudden stand made against trolls in some new way, is the lady being treated for cancer the right one to do it?
Or, with hindsight, should she have always done her job in jeans and trainers, no make-up and unwashed hair so that if she ever became ill she could crack on still?
The trolls would have been silenced then, would they?

OliviaBean · 09/06/2024 11:15

Not at all, I don't for one minute think my opinion is novel. I am just posting my thoughts.

To the poster who mentioned mental health issues. Yes you are probably right that there are many motivations for trolling. I just feel that someone who has such vitriol online has some issue underneath that needs to be dealt with. A perfectly stable person wouldn't behave that way.

IsoldeWagner · 09/06/2024 11:18

It's the heady combination of anonymity and a keyboard. Plus people not reading widely, but getting an opinion from Celebitchy (for example) or tiktok and believe it to be the truth without applying critical thinking.

OliviaBean · 09/06/2024 11:19

I do think the royal PR machine should start portraying their employers a little more human. I didn't say they need to come out in flip flops with messy hair but I think there's a happy medium.

Perhaps they are still between the old style of being enigmas, regal, keep the magic and the new more modern style of being relatable and being open to more scrutiny with the media. Very different time from when QEII started and I think they are stuck between the two worlds.

Which is why when you have an obvious troll the best thing to do is think 'Mate, you've got issues, glad I don't have to engage with you in RL' and not take them to heart. Take an example of some on here, who are clearly on a wind up mission, and treat it as the game they clearly think it is.

If someone is engaging in persistent serious trolling they aren't going to change their mind because you challenge them. For whatever reason they're getting a kick out of it and you're giving it to them.

You're right.
I must take that advice Smile
It'll probably work for the less obvious trolls too.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 09/06/2024 11:33

I feel a bit sorry for some of them. Clearly being a troll provides something that's missing in their lives, and I wonder if that's the sort of person they really want to be.

Anyway, have spent far too much of my Sunday morning on them.

LumiB · 09/06/2024 12:31

It's not just trolls it's anyone who is being nasty and writing awful nasty things about people whether its royal family like Catherine, Meghan, Harry, William through to celebrities (actors, musicians and so on) and then justifying it because you know it's their actions that mean we can be nasty or oh no if you put yourself out their expsct ro be criticised, except they arent crircising its down right nastiness about how they look, act etc.... no you can then just ignore it but no you actively choose to go to a forum and write nasty things

IsoldeWagner · 09/06/2024 12:35

"nasty" is subjective.
If someone has proven themselves to be dishonest, deceitful, greedy, hypocritical and mendacious (from their own words and actions) it's right to call them out.
Criticising a woman for growing old or slagging her off for some minor perceived error is different.

A free discussion is good, and necessary.
Just being untruthful and cruel is not.

ArcaneWireless · 09/06/2024 12:38

I have a problem staying silent when it comes to liars.

And those who affect my life with their mealie mouthed allegations and backtracking.

It is not nasty to call that out.

IsoldeWagner · 09/06/2024 12:42

Exactly. The kind of lies motivated by self aggrandisement and money.
Unforgivable.

LumiB · 09/06/2024 14:37

Lol it's people who have zero impact on your lives, if it was someone you knew, a family member or your own child you would never forgive them? Call them all sorta of names and what cut them out your life cos you can't stand them anymore...

IsoldeWagner · 09/06/2024 15:22

I don't know what you mean, @LumiB .
Harry and Meghan are public figures. Harry is happy to use taxpayers' money.
They behave badly, we call them out.
Their words, their actions, their fault.
"lol".

ArcaneWireless · 09/06/2024 15:23

Lol? Zero impact?

The various racist incidents which are now being cast as ‘unconscious bias’ and ‘learning opportunities’ instead of the deeply offensive racist incidents (and which, in my view, should be instantly sackable) are impacting my life. And not just my life but others too.

Lol away.

That pair have done far more damage than I ever thought possible.

It is far more than sorta shit and in my opinion, unforgivable.

IsoldeWagner · 09/06/2024 15:28

They've turned slagging off the royal family, and by implication, the UK, into a personal cottage industry.
If something makes you a celebrity and makes you a lot of money, but you destroy people in the process it's not ok. They'll find that all the wealth and fame is no substitute for integrity, honesty and generosity.
"lol".

Your last sentence says it all.

I daresay though that they’ve long since forgotten what integrity, honesty and generosity are.

Living the dream though in the bitterness, hypocrisy and malevolent stakes though.

Not much to lol about there.

MrsFinkelstein · 09/06/2024 16:55

It was heartening to see the vast vast majority of comments on that DM link about Catherine not attending Trooping the Colour are very supportive of her, and saying to take all the time she needs.

The couple of negative ones I saw were all (apparently) US posters. It might just be a different mindset and culture. In the UK we generally have substantial sick leave, and are used to not seeing the RF outwith "set" events.

The US seems to view them akin to celebrities who need to keep themselves visible, even if unwell.

Noseyoldcow · 10/06/2024 10:23

I hope that she will be seen soon, indicating that she is on the mend. But she should be left alone until she is ready.
Changing the subject slightly, where are the Montecito pair? They seem to have been quiet/not papped for more than two minutes. Or have I missed something?

Isn't this what you want for them to nor be in the spotlight and to disappear from public life, not they haven't been seen your wondering where they are...why is that? Bored of slagging them off for what they've done, said, wore in the past and need something new...
