Can this be true? That Harry and Meghan are off on a “royal” trip to Nigeria? What’s the game now? My head is spinning!

@IsoldeWagner That is not the narrative. People simply say there was and is a lot of racism towards Meghan. That is a fact.

They are excusing the Sussexes behaviour, and being dishonest about the workings of the UK. There is a lot of ignorance on here about how the UK actually operates!
I think it's difficult for some people to understand that H&M have failed because of their attitude, behaviour and personalities, not her ethnic heritage.
They should own their behaviour. Not constantly blame others.

I am pretty ancient and cannot remember it being a huge deal . Certainly not as big a deal as Diana’s interview and book.
Another example of hypocrisy; a poster criticised someone for mentioning Spare which was published over a year ago. It would appear that was a long time ago ( ditto OW etc) yet books/ interviews from 30 years ago are fair game.

I mentioned it in the context that they hadn't thrashed the rf since the book which was a year ago. Don't take my comment out of context to suit your point.

Serenster · 09/05/2024 19:37

NoisySnail · 09/05/2024 19:26

@Serenster you do know his election as MP is not relevant?
You do understand I was referring to how inaccurate the article was when it talked about his election as Prime Minister? It got basic facts totally wrong.

No, you misquoted the article. It never said that Rishi was elected as PM.

Serenster · 09/05/2024 19:38

Edited

So you are the one who got basic facts (being able to quote accurately) totally wrong, in fact.

MummyJ12 · 09/05/2024 19:38

Spending so much time arguing over one point but have no time to explain other “inaccuracies” in the article, instead it’s that classic old chestnut “google it”, (yet still not validating the point), and are now saying that some of us have no understanding of politics?

I don’t think it’s cool to patronise. It’s clear that we have a wealth of knowledge amongst our posters.

So Scrotie never published his nasty little tome?

I think you mean 'trashed'? "Thrashed" would be a little violent, even for them.

ArcaneWireless · 09/05/2024 20:42

Scrotie?

About right.

He is what I imagine an ironed baw bag looks like. The tube.

NoisySnail · 09/05/2024 19:10

@CoffeeCantata have you read the above straw manning in reaction to me pointing out the article was totally wrong when it talked about Rishi Sunak? It was a very glaring inaccuracy.
And yet so much straw manning. Life is too short to argue with people on the internet who are not interested in a proper discussion.
But if you honestly think this inaccurate article is a good one, then you have no understanding of politics.

I do hope you self flagellate for your racism when you choose Starmer over Sunak at the next election.

upinaballoon · 09/05/2024 22:22

What's 'straw manning'?

You know when I was little we weren't to say 'black' and 'coloured 'was the term and then along came black power and the fists at the Olympics (pronounced Alympics by so many) and 'black' became the respectable word to use and now I mustn't say 'coloured' or I'm a raving racist but it's just aok for me to say 'poc', indeed I must say 'poc' because nothing else is ok, well poc is not far away from pocs and pox and poxy, so actually I don't think it's much of an improvement.

upinaballoon · 09/05/2024 22:31

Tlolljs · 09/05/2024 14:11

I picked Wigan for the alliteration with wet and Wednesday. I’ve never been. But equally a foggy Friday in Falmouth would have worked.

Ooooh, I just lost my reply and have to write it again. I wasn't posting in a cross way. I like alliteration. 'A thoroughly damp Thursday in Thurrock'.

I've called him Scrotie for a while! It suits him, nasty little weasel!

IsoldeWagner · 09/05/2024 19:26

I think there's a narrative that some people cling on to, including pp, namely:-
That Meghan didn't succeed in the UK because she's a person of colour. The fact that other poc succeed, and frequently do very well, is therefore something that they find hard to accept, because it means there's a problem with Meghan. They can't blame racism.
To the extent whereby they won't accept that the UK electorate freely choose people of colour to represent them.

I think part of this problem is that many of their supporters are from the USA and see her as a sister hence the support regardless of anything else. Racism in the USA was as we all know institutionalised and it was not that long ago. In the UK we have never had that and your average person is not focussed on race in the same way. Most people in the UK are used to mixing with people from other races and nationalities on a daily basis and literally think nothing of it. Most people were happy when Harry was getting married. I know so many interracial couples and it is no big deal. Meghan's bad press is not because of racism it is because of personality and displayed behaviours.

NoisySnail · 09/05/2024 22:58

Its simply that black and brown people recognise and do not minimise the racism thrown at Meghan.

Runnerinthenight · 09/05/2024 23:31

Well I am tired of people maximising it.

ArcaneWireless · 09/05/2024 23:37

I lived through racism in the 70s and 80s.

I managed to get through that without throwing myself to the floor sobbing.

Just because you are black or brown or white- or however we choose to describe ourselves - doesn’t make it impossible to be a lying, self serving hypocrite.

And worse, by allowing sweeping allegations of racism to run unchecked for a time, then to minimise it all under the name of unconscious bias has made it all the more difficult to have racism dealt with seriously.

H minimised it. Start with him.

The very person who should have had her back without question.

The mealie mouthed explanations after their allusions and allegations did her a disservice - if it were true in the first place.

Recollections may vary in that regard.

KnickerlessParsons · 09/05/2024 23:42

In all honesty, I think that's wrong. It's true if you live in a city, but where I live is hardly the back of beyond but I rarely see a non white face.
Kids' school is all white, my work colleagues are all white, my friends are all white. Closest I can get is my cousin's daughter marrying an Indian, but they live a long way away and I've never met him.

My area is far more multiracial now than it was say 20 years ago.

I’m brown. Meghan Markle makes a mockery of racism imo and ime.

@KnickerlessParsons, Yes, according to the 2021 Census, 82% of the population in England and Wales identify as white.

Ethnic and cultural diversity is a different matter, though. India is a very ethnically and culturally diverse country, for example.

VelcroCat · 10/05/2024 04:10

It’s just so utterly bizarre.

It’s just so utterly bizarre.

What is utterly bizarre? They have been invited to visit and they decided to accept the invitation. Seems like a normal thing to do. They are going as private citizens.

What's bizarre is the daily mail obsession with them, it's a pointless article wondering how meghan will get there e.g. what route. So I guess if that is why you are saying how utterly bizarre then I agree with u.

IsoldeWagner · 10/05/2024 06:37

They're going as private citizens are they?
No - it is their choice to NOT be private citizens. They do not want that! It's a royal tour, because being Royal is their identity. That's their whole selling point.
What else are they?

LumiB · 10/05/2024 06:37

Runnerinthenight · 09/05/2024 23:31

Yes I would love if racism would just disappear but decade after decade it still goes on. People aren't maximising it. We should be ashamed that it still happens even though we are all aware it's unacceptable.
