Can this be true? That Harry and Meghan are off on a “royal” trip to Nigeria? What’s the game now? My head is spinning!

@OneHeartySnail Harry met Meghan's family. He did not meet her father. Meghan is estranged from her father.

She is now, since just before the wedding. They weren't estranged when she and Harry were dating or engaged.

OneHeartySnail · 09/05/2024 13:07

In fact, i think at that point she was posting fathers day messages on SM about what a wonderful father he was, and how much she owded him.

But didn't introduce him to the man she was thinking of marrying.

Of course, he lived in Mexico, not round the corner. But she and Harry had plenty of other international trips at that time.

Very odd

@BruFord I am older. Trust me it was a VERY big deal that Charles publicly criticised Queen Elizabeth's mothering skills and Philip's fathering skills. It probably hurt Elizabeth very much.

I don’t remember it being a very big deal 🤔. I’m sure the Queen was upset but I think he was just saying that she was distant, not that she was cruel in any way. But I’m sure he has come to understand that she was herself brought up that way and also that she had the difficult job of balancing monarchy with parenting at a very young age. Isn’t that why she later had Andrew and Edward?

It’s all just so unnecessary ffs. All she had to do was go to Wigan on a wet Wednesday, smile, cut a ribbon, wear a fucking hat!
Once they were settled then they could’ve picked projects they were interested in. But no they wanted to be top dogs. They want their heads knocking together.

Be careful what you say about Wigan. I once had a toasted teacake in Wigan Co-op and was delighted to hear a waitress call out to a lady in the kitchen, "Make that two teacakes four, Dorothy", in a lovely Lancashire accent.

Meghan doesn't realise what she missed by not embracing the counties of the UK.

Bugger allegations of de-railing.

I am pretty ancient and cannot remember it being a huge deal . Certainly not as big a deal as Diana’s interview and book.
Another example of hypocrisy; a poster criticised someone for mentioning Spare which was published over a year ago. It would appear that was a long time ago ( ditto OW etc) yet books/ interviews from 30 years ago are fair game.

LaMarschallin · 09/05/2024 13:53

Mmm... toasted teacakes and lots of butter <goes into reverie>

I picked Wigan for the alliteration with wet and Wednesday. I’ve never been. But equally a foggy Friday in Falmouth would have worked.

Meghan spent the Thanksgiving of 2016 - her relationship with Harry was public by this stage - with both her mother and her father in a house in Los Angeles. She posted about it on instagram. Rumour has it that they were staying at the Beckham’s house, as arranged by Harry. So, pre-wedding, Thomas Markle was apparently able to travel to LA, and Meghan was on good terms with him. Harry absolutely could have met his future father-in-law before the wedding. He didn’t, however.

Nigeria?
ArcaneWireless · 09/05/2024 14:28

Also older. And trust me I remember only a little fuss in comparison.

You wouldn't think so would you? But they're prepared to call them "HRH" so that's okay and they get a pass ...

It is probably amazing what they are prepared to overlook in exchange for being treated how they believe they should be treated.

All the insistence that this is a personal visit makes it feel worse as they presumably have the choice not to visit.

Humanitarians my arse.

Is that Thanksgiving photo her mother and father's hands? Talk about setting a scene for social media Shock

Yes, supposedly. Can you imagine it: “I’ll stand on this chair and point my camera down, you two hold the gravy - No, lower, you’re obscuring the ham…no, not that low, I want both your hands in shot…”. 🤣

AnnieSF · 09/05/2024 15:41

Thank you for the link @BemusedAmerican . That is another chilling read, several political journalists are saying the same thing. Harrys' Invictus are ignoring what is under their nose, Russia and China using any means to undermine democracy globally.

"Harry and Meghan’s most virulent fandom, often referred to as the ‘Sussex Squad,’ fail to understand the tragic extent to which African nationals are being placed in harm’s way by Moscow and Beijing. Now, as Western interests are being attacked in the Sahel, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are unwittingly aiding Putin and Xi’s by continuing to undermine King Charles as head-of-state and head of the Commonwealth.
Millions of African civilians in the Sahel are now being actively economically exploited by Russia and China. National resources are being stolen, and in hundreds of cases, they are being brutally massacred by Russian paramilitary groups. Ditto in the Central African Republic, Sudan and across the entire African continent — and Nigeria, courtesy of Boko Haram, is high on Putin and Xi’s wish list in Africa.

Democracy dies in darkness, but also in naiveté. Harry and Meghan must ditch their “Knives Out” approach to King Charles that was on display in Jamaica and recognize that, when they operate on the world stage, their decisions and actions result in very real consequences because of who Harry’s father is and the role he plays in global affairs."

Puzzledandpissedoff · 09/05/2024 16:37

Another thanks from me, @BemusedAmerican ... as I've said many a time, if the people of Africa think (correctly) that they had problems with the Brits, try having Russia and China calling the shots ☹

BemusedAmerican · 09/05/2024 16:55

I've mentioned on previous threads that I work with asylum seekers in NY. Many come from Sudan, Senegal, and Mali.

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar · 09/05/2024 17:19

Many thanks @BemusedAmerican . The Sussexes undermining the RF within the Commonwealth has so many potential repercussions their ridiculous super fans don’t seem to grasp. The points in Toth’s latest article and his one on their Jamaica visit are all one needs to remember when one is being goaded with the “Why do you care?” trope.

She wasn't estranged from him until immediately prior to the wedding. I don't know anyone who wouldn't have met their in-laws before getting married.

wtf!

I used it in the same way I'd use the people of europe, asia or wherever, NoisySnail

I'm well aware it's actually a continent made up of different countries, but the Brits (and now the Russians and Chinese) have meddled so much in various nations that if I picked out individual ones I'd be here all day

I'm old too and I don't remember it being a big deal either, probably because she knew it was true! I think they were more 'hands on' with the younger two.

Plus Charles did it once and never again, and I don't think he was getting paid for it either. I think it was to put the record straight from his point of view, but it was ill-advised!

Thank you for sharing this. It’s really interesting (and terrifying in equal measure).
Everyone should read that article imo!

It also explains why China and Russia would be implicated in the armies of bots that helped the Sussex Squad peddle their conspiracy theories and misinformation. Wow.

Frustrated Here We Go GIF by Sesame Street

Nothing. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. Especially as the article explains the impact on the entire continent.
