Can this be true? That Harry and Meghan are off on a “royal” trip to Nigeria? What’s the game now? My head is spinning!

@BemusedAmerican Everyone knows Harry is not making a Royal visit. Everyone who knows who is knows he is not a working member of the Royal family.

The President is a political figure who may be actively involved in political negotiations.
Charles as King is a ceremonial role. It is not a political role and he would never be involved in political negotiations.
You really can not compare the roles, they are very different.

It doesn't matter.

Joe Biden and King Charles are heads of their respective states. Their roles are on an entirely different level to the CHIMPO and the jam lady. Going on about Charles is just ridiculous. Harry and Meghan have no official role however much you might wish them to.

BemusedAmerican · 01/05/2024 20:30

Well, maybe he should ditch the title. Especially is he wants to become a citizen.

Knowing me Alan Partridge, knowing you non working member of the royal family.

AHA!

IsoldeWagner · 01/05/2024 20:31

They were at one point President and Vice President of the Commonwealth trust. Meghan had all the flowers of the Commonwealth embroidered on her wedding veil.
They were obviously enthusiastic supporters of the Commonwealth and may have been asked in the future to represent HM Government.
Not now of course.

fans self
I think the earth would spin off it's axis before Harry gave up his titles.

NoisySnail · 01/05/2024 20:34

Trying to pretend a political President's role is the same as a King as Head of State is laughable.
So in 2023 Bush made a visit to Nigeria to meet the President and discuss energy and the role of Nigeria in Darfur, Sudan. It would have been totally inappropriate for Charles to do the same.
When Charles visits countries he visits local projects, and watches local people singing and dancing.

I agree. But it is literally his official name on his birth certificate.

No, it's appropriate if the Foreign Office so direct him to do.
Perhaps you don't understand the role of a Constitutional Monarch?

NoisySnail · 01/05/2024 20:38

@IsoldeWagner If Charles met the President of Nigeria to discuss explicitly political matters it would be a national scandal. It is not his role.

Who cares about Charles?

He is not the subject of this thread. It's basically derailing at this point.

What about the CHIMPO and the jam lady? What is their role in Nigeria?

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 01/05/2024 20:39

Like it or not Charles is the head of state in the U.K. he does what the foreign office will ask. It’s not the same as Harry and Meghan visiting in a private capacity.

What sensitive political discussions?
I think you don't understand the nature of diplomacy.

NoisySnail · 01/05/2024 20:41

@IcedPurple you are derailing. Harry is visiting in his role as Founder and Patron of Invictus, not any other role.

IsoldeWagner · 01/05/2024 20:41

"CHIMPO and the jam lady" 😂

Says who?

Have Invictus made any official statement about this visit?

Has anyone made any official statement, come to think of it?

Meghan is an aspiring jam merchant. Why is she visiting and leaving their small children a continent away?

NoisySnail · 01/05/2024 20:45

@IcedPurple Yes the Nigerian government has clearly stated this. And calling Meghan insults is childish.

BemusedAmerican · 01/05/2024 20:45

@NoisySnail it is very easy to change your name in the US. My father did it without a problem.

IsoldeWagner · 01/05/2024 20:45

"aspiring jam merchant"
brilliant 😂

But neither of them travel there without the consent of their government which is what we were talking about in the first place. And often Charles travels with members of our government who will be negotiating energy deals etc. Anyway, would you not say that a
visit by the President of the USA. who according to you is “more” than a Head of State would add “more” legitimacy to a corrupt regime than a mere ceremonial Head of State like the King?

IcedPurple · 01/05/2024 20:46

NoisySnail · 01/05/2024 20:45

I asked you this yesterday and got no response, but can you link to the official statement from the Nigerian government? I've not seen it.

And she is an aspiring jam merchant, isn't she? Otherwise what was all that business with the jam jars about?

BemusedAmerican · 01/05/2024 20:46

People do it to Americsnize their name or because their 60's hippy parents named them " Toadstool".

Prince even started calling himself by a symbol.

NoisySnail · 01/05/2024 20:48

@smilesy Whether a President's visit lends legitimacy depends on the reasons for their visit. Bush's visit was to discuss the role of Nigeria in the Darfur genocide. That does not sound like a visit that legitimises a regime.

BemusedAmerican · 01/05/2024 20:48

He lives in Hollywood. No one there uses their real name.

This may clarify some matters for you, @NoisySnail .
