Wonderful!! Another celeb who feels the need To teach the masses how to cook and entertain as if the concept is all too vague 😊.

It's strange that Harry's team always seems to win at these events?

lol - he's not actually that good a player either ... but I'll guess he can gather together his mates who are good lol 😝 to make a charity team - it's not really competition as such

How did we ever manage to purchase artisanal jam before them?!

We couldn’t! We are simple folks 😊.

Things like avocado on rye toast and banana bread is beyond us, we need La La land peeps to guide us. Food writers and Editors what do they know eh ? Nothing!

im still thankful for Gal Gadot and her friends singing Imagine to lift our spirits during covid , its what kept us all from falling apart.

I wonder how much money the charity actually gets. I'd imagine these events cost a lot to stage.

BasiliskStare · 14/04/2024 14:37

Yes - I think it was rude to move the Chair of the event who is pretty much sponsoring the whole event to one side. Meghan giving her husband a kiss in congratulation - fair. Not to take over presenting the cup.

Personally I thought those high heels on a lawn just looked a bit gauche , but hey if she can walk in them , her choice .

Mylovelygreendress · 14/04/2024 14:39

DrJoanAllenby · 14/04/2024 12:29

Meghan has what my late grandmother used to call 'Jumble sale elbows!'

It's not an insult before anyone gets offended it's to describe someone who will elbow everyone out of the way at a jumble sale so they can get get first dibs and my grandmother would use it when describing someone who is 'pushy'!

Your grandmother was a wise woman.
I used to work with a woman with jumble sale elbows ( love that expression) . If there was a meeting with the Big Boss , she would be right in there trying to sit beside him or as near as possible . It was hilarious but annoying .

CC49 · 14/04/2024 14:40

I never understand why she is up on stage with the players. None of the other wives are. Is this is polo "thing" that I'm too middle class to comprehend?

BasiliskStare · 14/04/2024 14:45

So what else is Harry going to do ? The Invictus games which W&K were involved in when set up but was sort of ( I may be wrong here ) given to Harry to head up. Yes he can play polo & people are interested even if just a Jilly Cooper sort of way but I think it will need to be a really good documentary to engage sports fans who would be interested in a different sport & I do believe ( again 2nd hand knowledge ) Harry is not a brilliant player - to be fair I think anyone who can play polo - it's not that easy . . Nor I think is he great in front of a documentary camera. But if he has to do something for Netflix - what else could he whip out of his quiver ? I think they will have to involve a lot of other really good professional players to talk about "Polo behind the scenes " if it isn't just going to be a bit of a made in Chelsea style puff piece.

I often wonder that. Polo is a very, very expensive sport.
Give the equivalent of the event - plus luxury outfits - to Sentebale instead.

Do they not publish these details ?

We didn't. If we wanted 'artisanal' jam, we made our own. Sometimes even using fruit we had picked ourselves.

Invictus was Harry taking the concept of the US Warrior Games and transplanting it to UK and other countries.

It began within the Royal Foundation as W, K & H all used that back then. He got significant backing from the wider RF (I think ER II gave her blessing, which must have been influential), and from military/veterans charities and the MoD to get it off the ground.

When the Cambridges and the Sussexes separated from a unified Royal Foundation, it went with the Sussexes. But yes the Cambridges were also supportive for the first Games.

Polo works like this. You have a Patron of a team, who is the guy with all the money. He then pays the ten goal professionals to play for the team. These are usually South American.

They are ten goal professionals because that is their handicap. If he's lucky/skilled, the Patron might have a handicap of two or three goals.

Harry seems to be somewhere in the middle. Not a professional, but not a Patron. The Patron probably lets Harry on to the team for the kudos. Or there's some kind of charity workaround.

It’s all very nepotistic isn’t it. Meghan isn’t a patron of the charity, she was just listed as a guest at the event and yet she somehow made it centre stage above the charity Chair

Vespanest · 14/04/2024 15:41

If any of the players other than Nacho believed they may get some kudos playing a charity Polo match they are probably disappointed today. The only publicity seemed to be Harry and Meghan. I’m guessing many people will not even know who sentebale are or what they do.

The ten goal players are paid for participating. They are professionals. Even in a charity match.

It's pretty normal for Royal wives to present trophies when they are VIP guests.

We've seen a lot of it over the years

Thedom · 14/04/2024 15:57

Are there any black polo players ? I know it is traditionally a very white, very rich, sport, but they must be able to find a black polo player who would absolutely love the opportunity to participate.

You only play polo if you can afford to fund a team, if someone will pay sponsor you if you are someone like a Prince, or if you are a professional.

You have to be incredibly talented to be a professional. Hence there are so many from South America - they grow up with that culture, with polo ranches.

I find it fascinating that they’re happy to slag off and tell porkies about the Royal Family but they also follow their customs and use the titles the RF have to them.

Its almost like they are talentless and wouldn’t have a USP if they didn’t have the royal status

Janiie · 14/04/2024 16:18

Its all so typically tone deaf. The Sentable site states they 'address issues of wealth inequity' yet we we have a bunch of over privileged white men playing jolly hockey sticks on horses. They also 'address issues of climate resilience'. I mean I've no idea how those playing along with the poor horses and the massive Netflix squad got to Florida but I doubt it was climate resilient friendly.

He just doesn't get how ridiculous and grasping they both seem.

jeffgoldblum · 14/04/2024 16:22

Polo is the least inclusive sport there is. Very elitist!

AssignedUnimportantAtBirth · 14/04/2024 16:28

I thought Meghan didn't want to be a "royal wife". Didn't want to be the eye-candy all frocked up on the sidelines while the big Prince carries on with his privileged existence. All the protestations about oppressed royal women and the insults hurled at Catherine for being a dutiful, dull Stepford seem a bit hollow when you see this sort of royal cos play.

Thedom · 14/04/2024 16:29

They could at least showcase some diversity, even at an amateur level if not at a high competition level. Both Harry and Nacho have the means to personally sponsor some amateur female and/or black riders.

I googled some past Sentebale polo events and even the event is S. Africa, was overwhelmingly populated by mainly white guests mingling at the after event.

That being said, the polo event does raise a lot of money for Sentabale, but still, it's not a good look in this day and age.
