Thedom, yes it's a very good cause, but I know what you mean.

Polo is the least inclusive sport there is. Very elitist!

And absolutely appalling for the climate.

I just googled, I believe this is a recent report

Shariah Harris, 25, became the first Black woman to play in the prestigious tournament that began Sunday at Port Mayaca Polo Club.

https://eu.palmbeachpost.com/story/sports/polo/2024/02/02/first-black-woman-to-play-in-us-open-womens-polo-championship-making-history/72448808007/#:~:text=OKEECHOBEE%20—%20Shariah%20Harris%20never%20dreamed,at%20Port%20Mayaca%20Polo%20Club.

I suppose, at least you can say Harry is keeping it authentic by running a secret event for himself, his wife and his rich white polo buddies.

Thedom · 14/04/2024 16:29

They could at least showcase some diversity, even at an amateur level if not at a high competition level. Both Harry and Nacho have the means to personally sponsor some amateur female and/or black riders.

I googled some past Sentebale polo events and even the event is S. Africa, was overwhelmingly populated by mainly white guests mingling at the after event.

That being said, the polo event does raise a lot of money for Sentabale, but still, it's not a good look in this day and age.

Yes! why don't they showcase some diversity, shine a lens on up and coming players of different ethnicities. Why don't they play a game with less wealth inequity which is what Sentable want to address.

But nope. Let the rich folk gallivant in Florida whilst frantically virtue signalling about Africa. It's hilarious even by Harold's absolutely hypocrital graspiness.

Thedom · 14/04/2024 16:41

This is another report about young African american polo players, why not invite some of those kids to play an amateur game at their Sentebale charity event.

Maybe I have given H an idea and he will now try and write this in to his programme LOL.

Ride to the Olympics CEO on increase in Black polo players: 'We break barriers'

More African Americans, both male and female, are playing polo.

IsoldeWagner · 14/04/2024 16:42

That's interesting. That's a proper barrier to break, isn't it? Well done them.

Abouttimeforanamechange · 14/04/2024 17:06

Polo wasn't originally a sport for white people. It was played in India, where it was taken up by the British, who then took it to other parts of the world. It was popular in the army, which had inter-regimental tournaments. (Winston Churchill played, as a young army officer in India.)

I haven't looked it up, but I expect there were wealthy Indian princes and maharajahs who had their own teams.

Well if we're going back in history then you need to play it with the heads of people you have defeated.

I was going to say the same!
Play it the way the Afghans played it 😉

Geebray · 14/04/2024 17:10

I'm sure there are plenty of the heads of living people that Harry and Meghan would like to play polo with 😏

No it was horses first then elephants

Elephant polo

Jaipur is where polo originated. The sport was once patronised by the royals, but the horse was swapped with an elephant.

Thedom · 14/04/2024 18:22

I had to look up the origins of Polo, thanks @Abouttimeforanamechange

Interestingly, it started in Persia.

"A game of Central Asian origin, polo was first played in Persia (Iran) at dates given from the 6th century BC to the 1st century AD. Polo was at first a training game for cavalry units, usually the king’s guard or other elite troops. To the warlike tribesmen, who played it with as many as 100 to a side, it was a miniature battle.

In time polo became a Persian national sport played extensively by the nobility. Women as well as men played the game, as indicated by references to the queen and her ladies engaging King Khosrow II Parvīz and his courtiers in the 6th century AD.

From Persia the game spread to Arabia, then to Tibet (the English word polo is the Balti word meaning “ball”), to China, and to Japan. In China (910) the death of a favoured relative in a game prompted Emperor A-pao-chi to order the beheading of all surviving players.

Polo was introduced into India by the Muslim conquerors in the 13th century; but, although the game had been described in Sir Anthony Sherley’s Travels to Persia (1613), the first Europeans to play the game were British tea planters in Assam, who formed the first European polo club in 1859 at Silchar.

The Calcutta Polo Club was formed in the early 1860s. Polo spread rapidly after a captain in the 10th Hussars stationed in India saw a match early in 1866 and immediately formed a team from among his fellow officers.

Before the year ended, informal matches were held between British cavalry units stationed in India. In 1869 a challenge round was held between the 10th Hussars and the 9th Lancers in England. At this time there were eight men to a side and almost no rules.

Polo grew rapidly in England, with matches at Richmond Park and Hurlingham attracting more than 10,000 spectators by 1875. After it had been introduced by the military, the sport of polo remained popular with them but also spread to the universities and was popular with the nobility and royalty.

Loads of pap pictures of the event.
That must piss them off, we know how they hate the paps and their ways!

pilates · 14/04/2024 18:37

It must be awful to be stalked by the paps like that. What about their privacy? 😁

I thought Meghan didn't want to be a "royal wife". Didn't want to be the eye-candy all frocked up on the sidelines while the big Prince carries on with his privileged existence. All the protestations about oppressed royal women and the insults hurled at Catherine for being a dutiful, dull Stepford seem a bit hollow when you see this sort of royal cos play.

Totally agree.

Edited

They demand a focus and priority on equality from everyone else, and that everyone else should look introspectively at their own biases, but Harry and Meghan’s motto may as well be “Do as I say not as I do”

BemusedAmerican · 14/04/2024 20:14

All three this thread, I kept remembering the scene in "The Man Who Would Be King" when they played polo with the heads of their enemies.

CathyorClaire · 14/04/2024 20:50

How did we ever manage to purchase artisanal jam before them?!

Bon Maman (who beat Meghan to it) is as posh as I've ever gone.

Happy to give $250 a jar bee spit a swerve 😎

JSMill · 14/04/2024 21:06

If I buy Bonne Maman, I think I am really pushing the boat out! I clearly have my priorities wrong.

She also didn’t want to be a ‘lady who lunches’ but that hasn’t stopped her calling the paps for her numerous lunch dates.

Being the spare seemed like a great job to me, I can’t really see what’s better with the life Harry’s chosen in the US, except perhaps the sunshine. Everything else is the same (polo, charity events etc) except he doesn’t get all the perks he did in the RF.

Taste the difference? Aren't you posh? I buy the Stamford street one.
