I just wanted to share some thoughts I've had since talking to some RL friends last night. I'm a Republican, and didn't actually post much on any of the threads on here. But I did read them, laugh at the ones I found funny and speculated a little IRL. I enjoy robust mental health, but I feel a little sad and down today about the news. And a little guilty. It occurs to me that it might be a real source of distress to some other people. Not the big media ghouls, of course, they have no shame and will just move on to the next thing without looking back, but for those of us who bought in to the whole farrago and maybe posted things we now wish we hadn't. So remember, the media often manipulates us, the establishment often lies to us and it's actually a good thing not to immediately take what we're told at face value. Don't beat yourself up and find someone to talk to if you feel really bad about it. Take care of yourselves.

No one would be interested in them at all if they were ordinary citizens.

Don't kid yourself.

Obviously not this generation but eventually that would happen.

naturesform · 24/03/2024 10:30

But the two things aren't mutually exclusive, it's possible to feel sympathy for them on a personal level whilst remaining a republican. And if anything, the whole thing just reinforces why we shouldn't have such a prominent RF to be speculated over in the first place.

Yes totally agree with this.

SuziQuinto · 24/03/2024 10:46

Out of interest, @Clawedfoot73 , would you do anything about the Sussexes and their titles?
Or is this just about UK working members?.

Salemforcuddles · 24/03/2024 10:49

bentle · 24/03/2024 10:26

The abysmal handling of the situation by KP has facilitated the airing of some useful and legitimate criticism of the rf. The phrase 'conspiracy theories' isn't convincing when used with the aim of shutting down legitimate criticism which is what appears to be happening on these threads. Some extreme theories are out of the window for sure but the fact that Kate's doctors have recommended preventative chemotherapy doesn't mean that a significant number of things said about William in particular isn't correct. Kate's course of treatment isn't an either/ or with much of the other stuff which has been levelled.

Also, there's a certain amount of unedifying smug going on at the moment - and it's very clearly not coming from those who called out certain members of the rf for how they conduct themselves in all manner of dubious ways. So when there are all these calls for looking at selves in mirrors, check yourselves out maybe?

Well I won't be taking how to behave lessons from you

More popular why? Because she has cancer? How patronising of you.

Twist my words then insult me, but that awful idea came from your own brain rather than mine.

She’s going to popular now because she’s a fucking champ for the way she’s handling it, and all of the ghouls. Even the American celebrity followers are crowing it loudly. People who didn’t even know who she was before now.

meercat23 · 24/03/2024 10:19

I hope I misunderstood your post but it came across that you were doubting what we have been told about the Princess of Wales health because in her broadcast she didn't look as others have looked during treatment.

As others have pointed out, she said she was in the early stages of treatment, the full side effects, including impact on hair, do not appear immediately.

Also, as pointed out, not all chemo causes hair loss and for those forms of chemo that do cause hair loss some of them respond to use of the cold cap.

I used a cold cap. Not pleasant but effective for me. My hair did thin but mostly around the edges and really only myself and my hairdresser would have known.

She's very thin her age will help her through it but not her weight. I know how hard it is for people to eat during chemo but she can't get any thinner. She is thin and if she doesn't take good care of herself she could look frail.

Surely, if it wasn't the Royal family who were the subject of all the gossip and innuendo, it would be the " elected head of state" or some such. It's not the subject of the hatred and abuse that should be the focus of change, it should be those who promote and propagate the abuse and gossip that should!

They would be subjected to some degree of media scrutiny of course, as they should be, but not to the degree that a family who inherits the position has, at least that has been the case in countries which already have an elected head of state. They would be much more neutral figures and the public would not be invited to view their weddings and birthday photographs of their dc. And the advantage would be that they would be putting themselves up for election knowing the ins and outs of the job. They wouldn't be a ten year old boy like George gradually realising what his fate will entail.

ArcaneWireless · 24/03/2024 10:56

I honestly don’t think so clawedfoot

I think any person in a prominent position would be subject to the same scrutiny. If not worse.

I agree that it shouldn’t be that way and hopefully future generations will want to see an end of the (for want of a better term) witch hunts. I truly can’t see there being a difference in the scrutiny between a royal head or elected one though.

Yes. So many people are claiming that they 'were only interested in the communications angle' when we who have been on these threads over the past few weeks know that they were absolutely relishing the thought of some massive scandal. Those of us who said we should just wait and see and that likely there was no great conspiracy afoot, were fobbed off as 'forelock tuggers' who swallow everything they are 'fed'.

Speculation is one thing. Being desperate for some lurid scandal is quite another.

Of course all inherited titles would be redundant, as would all the peers in the House of Lords.

We could still have second chamber though and our republic could still be built on the best and great traditions of the UK and and its most noble ideas. Our heritage and history can still be celebrated. What this is all about is changing our political institutions and making them genuinely democratic.

How do you know that? Are you the person who accessed her medical records?

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 24/03/2024 11:03

Clawedfoot73 · 24/03/2024 10:34

I think people are missing the basic point that Katherine, William and their children could be left entirely alone to lead their lives in peace if we had an elected head of state. No one would be interested in them at all if they were ordinary citizens. They wouldn't need a PR strategy. They wouldn't have people trying to access their private medical records. Yes all of the internet trolling and ridiculous conspiracy theories were completely awful, as were some of the Mumsnet threads, but all of these issues arose out of them being members of the RF and them needing to be in the public eye, because that is how the monarchy works. No one seems to be saying this!

You seriously think that, do you? right now in France there are people claiming that Brigitte Macron is a man and trying to prove it, saying they can't find a birth certificate for her and posting pictures of her that 'prove' she was born male.

ANYONE in the public eye in any way is fair game, royal or not.

ArcaneWireless · 24/03/2024 11:05

Quite MrsDanvers

We have no idea if they caught it early.

I googled it but if that's not the case it says a lot about her private doctors. It's mainly American media reporting it's early stages not a reliable source. She was positive throughout her speech and did mention she will be okay.

My mum was stage 4 so she had to have surgery to remove the cancer. I don't know what stage my uncle was he recovered and the cancer has never returned. My mother's cancer kept on returning her numbers went up and she needed chemo. Before she died she was having immunotherapy I think that's what killed her in the end. Her consultant advised her not to have that therapy but she choose to go ahead.

"But what about Andrewwwwwwwwww" again, I see. Your argument seems to be that the RF has one deeply unpleasant member, so the shit being flung must be justified, and all the people posting the 'unedifying smug' are colluding in the dubious conduct so don't listen to them, anyone, we're the brave ones calling these people to account and exposing them for what they are.

Well I think most reasonable people would agree that Brigitte and Emmanuel Macron are quite an unusual couple and as such their relationship is bound to provoke some press comment. Not that I think that makes those awful stories justified.

What is different is that they are both intelligent adults, who have knowingly worked towards becoming elected, and are therefore more able to deal with whatever comes their way. They were not born in to it without any choice in the matter. And they are more able to defend their position having been elected by the majority.

They represent you don't you care or is it put up and shut up. You have a voice you should use it against Andrew. He should not be there representing you. Too much violence against women it must end.

Can I ask you why you think they're more able to deal with something like that? why does the fact that Macron's elected make rumours like that any less hurtful and distressing?
