I just wanted to share some thoughts I've had since talking to some RL friends last night. I'm a Republican, and didn't actually post much on any of the threads on here. But I did read them, laugh at the ones I found funny and speculated a little IRL. I enjoy robust mental health, but I feel a little sad and down today about the news. And a little guilty. It occurs to me that it might be a real source of distress to some other people. Not the big media ghouls, of course, they have no shame and will just move on to the next thing without looking back, but for those of us who bought in to the whole farrago and maybe posted things we now wish we hadn't. So remember, the media often manipulates us, the establishment often lies to us and it's actually a good thing not to immediately take what we're told at face value. Don't beat yourself up and find someone to talk to if you feel really bad about it. Take care of yourselves.

Me personally? Yes, I believe it.

I don't think they did themselves any favours by using an obvious green screen background though. These kind of choices only serve to fuel speculation.

😂

musthorse · 24/03/2024 09:28

@naturesform and yet there are people in the public eye apologising right left and centre for being caught up in the conspiracy theories. Your prediction is shrivelling by the moment as more details emerge about the whole sad situation.

Unbelievable. Do get a grip

SuziQuinto · 24/03/2024 09:28

Thanks, @themessygarden . Kate sounds like a genuine person. It's a nice story because she was just being kind with no notion of it being reported.

“That would not have stopped the nastiness, conspiracy theories and speculation”.

The family is worth £35 billion, have £30 million quid televised weddings, huge televised state occasions and spend months each year on the front pages of national newspapers over various dramas, falling outs, and occasionally suspected foul play ( eg, Charles lobbying Parliament, alleged racist abuse/bullying, Andrew’s escapades). In that context, expecting a global internet comprised of 5 billion individuals to suddenly maintain radio silence when the wife of the future king goes of the radar with not a peep for three months bar one staged/heavily edited photo is hardly realistic. And the vast majority of the speculation I saw was no more than “I think something is up/they’re not telling us the whole story here”, which sadly turned out to be the case.

IronCurtain · 24/03/2024 09:30

I think it’s highly unlikely the press team at KP will have had any idea what was going on, both when William dropped out of the memorial service and on Mother’s Day.

Any institution that works with highly confidential information knows that to prevent leaks you have to keep the number of people in the know to the absolute minimum. Even if this adds awkwardness or inconsistencies.

I’d imagine the sequence of events is indicative of this: a decision to compromise sleek public comms in favour of maintaining privacy.

People in the public eye, of course. They're apologising because they're concerned about their own reputation. Plenty of normal people still caught up in the conspiracies like I thought there would be.

I notice Sarah Vine has apologised this morning.
That still leaves all those US actors/performers to do something similar.
I think Blake Lively has.

Blake Lively didn't really apologise, it was more of a "silly me" , no mention of Catherine at all, and it's on insta stories, so not a permanent record. Sheryl Crow has quietly deleted her "where's Kate" post without an apology - a woman who has had cancer twice and asked for privacy when she had it, not having the guts to own up to her own hypocritical, distasteful mistake. Seems to be a lot of this around. The Kardashians are just repulsive imo, does anyone expect them to apologise? Colbert will be the biggy.

SuziQuinto · 24/03/2024 09:31

@anotherside - the vast majority of the speculation you saw was of a general, innocent nature?
Well the rest of us saw a lot more than that.

themessygarden · 24/03/2024 09:32

I think online 'hooligans', similar to the ones throwing cans in the crowd at a soccer match, is a very apt name for the trolls.

"Hooligans make a point of being where the trouble is likely to start.

This, to me, captures almost uncannily the actions of those who engage with the latest conspiracy, who retweet it, who amplify it, whether the “starting signal” is a story about Kate or some other quarry. "

SuziQuinto · 24/03/2024 09:33

Thanks, @Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar - not surprising, unfortunately.
Is it true that these people use the same PR/publicists as The Duke and Duchess of Sussex? Correct me if I'm wrong.

DappledThings · 24/03/2024 09:33

She didn't. That's the point. They said sue was having surgery, they gave a statement of thanks. They set out a timeline for when she would return. That wasn't without a peep, and yes it is realistic for people to just accept that and not insist they need more information

And the vast majority of the speculation I saw was no more than “I think something is up/they’re not telling us the whole story here”. Which was correct.
We don't know exactly when it was discovered that the biopsy had found cancerous cells. We don't know when there was more to the story and we have no right to know that. None of that justifies the insane rumours or the insistence still that the palace's PR massively fucked up or lied. The situation changed and the information changed.

crumblingschools · 24/03/2024 09:33

@TinnitusEar that particular poster is probably one of those who think the latest video is false. Probably also disappointed they are saying it is cancer as she was determined they were getting divorced

Yes. WME seem to be the common factor between all these celebs. That could be a coincidence, of course, they are a major agency.

My mum was and looked ill when she had an operation and chemo. My uncle had cancer he looked very ill after his operation and chemo. Its a huge trauma on the body. It gets harder after every chemo treatment my mum and uncle struggled to eat and stay awake.

Kate will get better and she looks like she's getting better after her operation and chemo.

As several people have said, chemo/surgery/cancer treatment is not one universal thing where everyone reacts in the same way. They simply don't.

OK, you're not a fan, fine, but with respect, your relatives experiences have no relevance to Kates.

Serenster · 24/03/2024 09:35

Carole in the car - clearly wasn’t Kate given the weight she has lost.

That ignores the fact that several Royal Reporters said how heavily the Palace pressured them not to publish the photo on the basis it had been taken in a breach of privacy and because they generally did not publish paparazzi pictures of the royal family members. The Palace would have no need to do this if it wasn’t Kate int he picture - they could have just said it wasn’t her. But they pressured for it not to be published in the UK because it was her.

The comments on Blake Lively’s IG are heartening. I was blown away by the support for Catherine. So many telling her that her “apology” is pathetic and they are shocked by her behavior.

Carpediemmakeitcount · 24/03/2024 09:37

Seizethedog · 24/03/2024 00:05

She’s only just started chemo . She also probably has extensions.

You're making me laugh hair extensions I heard it all now. Why didn't they put some good natural make up on her.

Reassuring that there are some decent people who don't fall into the trap of believing bullshit conspiracy theories aimed at harming people.

musthorse · 24/03/2024 09:39

@Carpediemmakeitcount are you trying to be deliberately offensive? Your comments are in very poor taste.

crumblingschools · 24/03/2024 09:41

@Carpediemmakeitcount what are you suggesting?

The first round and type of chemo my DF had when he was diagnosed with cancer didn’t make him feel or look ill. When the cancer returned other different types of chemo did impact him (although he never lost his hair, although it was never as glossy as Kate’s!)

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar · 24/03/2024 09:41

As several people have said, chemo/surgery/cancer treatment is not one universal things where everyone reacts in the same way. They simply don't.

I've had two close friends, both absolutely beautiful women, go through preventative chemo recently. Apart from looking a little tired, you wouldn't have any inkling by just looking at them that they were undergoing cancer treatment. How they felt in themselves is a completely different story. We've already had the "I had abdominal surgery and was back at work the same afternoon" type post ad nauseam to imply Catherine is lazy. Now we are going to have the "she's not looking ill enough to have cancer" posts ad nauseam.

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 24/03/2024 09:41

I think WME should just have their vacuous US clients sign a joint apology card, the bastards. Sheryl Crow. We know her for her cancer battles more than her music these days. You think she'd have known better. Kim Kardashian has more silicone than sense. Stephen Colbert's an overrated, unfunny tool... very unlikable host.

A load of people sticking the boot in to anybody isn't heartening. And that's what this is giving people the opportunity to do....the very first things posted on MN after the announcement weren't "oh no, how sad" but "hang your heads in shame you disgusting people" over and over, a lot of quite weirdly angry posts. It's literally giving people some kind of outlet and it's pretty ironic.
