Reading the comments since a 42 year old has made her cancer diagnosis public knowledge to the world has completely destroyed my faith in humanity.

Northernsouloldies · 23/03/2024 01:46

Yes you're right.. thankfully there are still people with empathy for others from all walks of life.

Tbh, all the speculation only happened because there was complete blackout from what was previously a highly visible public figure and then a fake photo. Their advisers could’ve handled it better. It’s normal for public figures to share information on their health-people who think they’re like the rest of us are naive. Imagine if the PM disappeared for weeks without anything after a short initial statement-there would be endless speculation. I remember Mo Mowlam got a lot of comments prior to her revelation of a brain tumour diagnosis. People are generally sympathetic once they’re aware-speculating on something doing on is hardly crime of the century.

I agree with this. It could have been handled a lot better. Sarah Ferguson and King Charles have been given complete privacy and there has been no speculation surrounding them.

We were told she had serious abdominal surgery. That should have been all they needed to say

What a lovely compassionate post.

CassandraWebb · 23/03/2024 02:14

And why the scepticism?

You must have wildly misunderstood my posts

silverneedle · 23/03/2024 03:19

I think what threw the conspiracy theorists into overdrive was the fake Mother's Day Photo. Before then I think most people were generally happy with the "she's had surgery and will return after Easter" explanation.

I recall it differently. A few unpleasant rumours were going around some social media accounts shortly after the announcement she would be taking time off for surgery. They then started to really pick up speed after Prince William missed the King Constantine service at the end of Feb. By just before Mother’s Day there was considerable pressure for Catherine Middleton to give further info. I thought this silly and unnecessary as they said in January she was having surgery and not expected back doing royal duties until after Easter. After the Mother’s Day photo - and to me some editing was no big deal, mileage may vary - social media then went crazy with its far out claims.

Exactly right. And I hope all those people who insisted they had a right to details of the Princess's illness and when they didn't get them made them up, are pleased that they made a sick woman who looks frail, come out and face the public to prove rhat she wasn't dead or in a coma or abucted by aliens.

I wondered when the people should hang their heads in shame posts would start
You can have every sympathy in the world for a young mum suffering with cancer and still comment that a video alleging she was sighted wasn't her . Less of the histrionics

You are never wrong, are you? Zero compassion, expert on arguing.

Redpaisley · 23/03/2024 05:42

CassandraWebb · 23/03/2024 00:02

I didn't mean it in a mean way. It's lovely you would do that.

It's just hard because overall there seems to be a weird dichotomy in how people react to a cancer diagnosis Vs other equally devastating diagnoses (see all the hand wringing now we know KM has cancer not "serious abdominal surgery") and I don't really understand why.

You have an issue with people showing support for Kate after they learnt of her cancer diagnosis? On a thread about her illness, you want to talk about other serious illnesses not being given similar importance. Why?

Southwestten · 23/03/2024 06:58

On one of the many recent speculative threads someone commented that the royal family cost each one of us around 77p in taxes. Amazing how much access to private and personal information to which some people feel entitled in return for that 77p isn’t.

Yes I agree. There was a poster a few days ago actually saying because we pay 77p the public is fully entitled to know each and every detail about the Royal family.
The tax payer pays for loads of things - MPs, civil servants etc. therefore are we entitled to know every detail about all of them?

Northernsouloldies · 23/03/2024 07:07

Gotta get your 77p worth...that's just bonkers

It’s relentless isn’t it ? She’s been forced to share the news with the public so to some extent the ‘mystery’ has been solved, but I guarantee the speculation and the vitriol won't stop. To some extent the announcement has only served to feed the trolls.

buzzlightyearsaway · 23/03/2024 07:56

All this speculation and none of them were cancer!

People are crazy

buzzlightyearsaway · 23/03/2024 07:58

What type of cancer?

Is it abdominal?

That must be rare in a young woman. She's fortunate enough to have found it but i guess that's part due to her privileged position

CassandraWebb · 23/03/2024 07:59

Redpaisley · 23/03/2024 05:42

No,that's not what I am saying. I am saying her original surgery was almost certainly devastating in and of its own right and she deserved all the sympathy and understanding right from the outset.

CassandraWebb · 23/03/2024 08:03

SammyScrounge · 23/03/2024 04:55

Exactly. Yet I am being "got at" on here for expressing that sentiment! She already deserved sympathy/support/privacy. Any abdominal surgery is traumatic and there are many that could relate to a life threatening/scary / painful etc etc condition. This diagnosis isn't a reason to suddenly criticise people's speculation. She deserved privacy from the outset

(Intriguing that my own diagnosis is being questioned and people still felt able to fling insults at me after I disclosed it though 🤷‍♀️. Kindness obviously is quite selectively applied)

FrancisSeaton · 23/03/2024 08:08

@Redpaisley I have plenty of compassion for ALL people going through cancer . I get tired of the holier than thou preaching on here though from people because others have naturally discussed the absence of a public figure and the various fake photos. If you can't separate the two then I pity you

100%.

You'd hope people would feel shit about their actions and learn from them but just like with Nicola Bulley and other situations where social media gets out of control and is causing harm, it just seems to make some people double down and claim "well if they'd said x or y, there wouldn't have been so much speculation".

When will people realise when it's none of their business and they're actually not entitled to the information? Never it seems

fleurneige · 22/03/2024 22:23

This, big time. Including on MN! (and I am no Royalist)

It’s ridiculous I’m not a royalist either but she deserves privacy like the rest of us! Also they were told she wouldn’t be seen pritty much till after Easter!
