The point of the Mother's Day picture is not that it was photoshopped. It is that it was syndicated to the picture agencies, images have to be "a snapshot in time."
If it had been on their Instagram feed then there would have been no problem. The fact that it was presented as news was a problem. I assume that must have been a PR people's mistake.

The picture agencies are regularly publishing photoshopped photos. They just haven't conducted either a the forensic examination of them they did over Catherine's MD photo, nor have they vindictively decided to go through the back catalogue to fuel a ridiculous conspiracy theory. The great thing to come out of the whole episode is that everyone's photos can be now examined and shown to be the fakes they are. Good.

I think it's exactly the same as Stalin removing Trotsky from photographs. It's just like being in the old Soviet Union.
