Bit off topic but don't the NHS share our medical records these days?

kirinm · 20/03/2024 10:26

@justasking111 what do you mean sorry? What would a newspaper paying someone within the hospital to check hospital records have to do with Russia?

Sorry if that is a stupid question!

myrtleWilson · 20/03/2024 10:28

Because a UK paper running a story on illegally obtained medical records of a member of the RF would face a massive court case @kirinm

Ah okay. I don't know the law around this sort of stuff.

It’s very unusual for a celeb not to make a brief medical statement, as the King has. The only reason they wouldn’t is if it’s embarrassing or makes her look bad. Which suggests the theories about anorexia or plastic surgery are correct.

What, like the announcement that she has had abdominal surgery and would be back after Easter you mean?

But they did. They stated that she went in for planned surgery, specified it was abdominal surgery, and that she was having time off until Easter. What more do you want? Why do you think you have more right to know more? Would you expect to know the medical details of anyone who has ever accessed benefits because you pay for them with your taxes? What’s the difference? She’s allowed medical privacy. Everyone is allowed medical privacy.

ShamedBySiri · 20/03/2024 10:38

When patients are in the private system there will be no records of the private treatment given on the NHS system. (Obviously any previous NHS treatment will be there). We quite often have private patients attend my department for a particular procedure which can't be done at the local private hospital. We have a good working relationship with them so that they email blood results to us in advance etc. But open the patient record and there will be nothing. (Opening the record for professional reasons obviously to check details).

Re whoever the guilty party/ies are it's possible it was agency staff. The hospital system absolutely will have a record of every log in and be able to trace. Though again staff may have gone for tea without logging out or something giving someone the opportunity to make use of someone else's login. They will need to do a proper investigation obviously and hopefully a referral to the NMC when they have the facts.

Uricon2 · 20/03/2024 10:59

FizzyStream · 20/03/2024 07:44

Nope I don't think her medical details should be public. I just think if they hadn't been SO secretive and then lied in the form of a doctored photograph then the level of media hype would never have got to this point. They knew it would generate too much interest and they made it worse. They could have mitigated some of this complete circus so they aren't entirely blameless.

There is absolutely no excuse for anyone illegally accessing her medical records and if it has happened, she is indeed completely blameless.

Again if it is true, we know it will have been motivated by more than idle curiosity (££££) and I hope they have the book thrown at them, the same way I would if it happened to me.

Russian media stated that Charles was dead the other day.

Records can be shared with patient permission or in other limited circumstances, such as safeguarding, crime prevention or other legal reasons. Clinicians can also share relevant clinical data with other HCP if appropriate to the person's care.

One of the [ many] reasons that Jeremy Hunt's assertion that technology is going to fix the NHS is a pile of hot air. (Other descriptions are available) is that the public won't accept widespread data sharing.

Google 'failed NHS IT projects' if you feel inclined to believe Hunt.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 20/03/2024 12:39

If not, the incident could be massaged off a CV after a few years of agency work

Any decent agency will ask for references when you sign up. 'Oh, so and left your hospital? why was that?' particularly if the culprit wants to carry on working in the sphere of private medicine that deals with clients who demand absolute anonymity and security.

I love the Mail’s shock and outrage when they would 100% pay for this information and bail out the staff member if they could get the exclusive.

Quite.

Citrusandginger · 20/03/2024 12:51

Mrs Danvers, there is a big variation in agencies and unfortunately many don't do enough due diligence. It's depressingly common for people to get friends to do references, work for an agency that doesn't check too closely in a care home or short staffed service and then reappear.

I've had a number of withdrawals over the years when I have insisted on a proper reference from an HR dept, not a staff nurse from the same unit. Just last week I was challenged for rejecting someone on account of their DBS because they are already working in a hospital.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 20/03/2024 12:56

That's depressing but not surprising - after all agencies want to get their candidates in and earning fees. Would those sort of agencies deal with a place like the hospital the PoW went to, though? you'd hope their recruitment procedures would be rather more rigorous than the place that just wants a warm body.

MrsFinkelstein · 20/03/2024 13:39

It's interesting to me to see who online is absolutely going all in on the conspiracy theories.

Christopher Bouzy (Bot Sentinal and who featured on H&Ms Netflix show saying how they were targeted by bots) is one.
He's constantly posting about it just now. Has put together video clips analysing gaits/heights/eye level etc.

It's genuinely coming across as a bit unhinged now. But he's getting enabled by pro-H&M accounts who are urging him on and ramping up the rhetoric. He's shared a couple of things that have been completely debunked, and easily so. Sharing AI fake images etc. He is fairly well known, esp on Twitter, so when you get people usually known for being reliable sharing these theories it gives them a veneer of respectability they don't deserve.

It's just weird that someone would throw a well earned reputation away for something like this.

But accounts like him spreading this nonsense influence people and hype them up, so that the idea of breaching patient confidentiality seems like a good idea.
