No, it gained a new name then maybe, and became more open/talked about, but the idea that it was new is bonkers.

No it wasn’t new.

But as pp said Alistair Campbell became the story and spin was generally picked up by the public.

I GIVE UP!!!

Thank Fuck. You sound like you need a holiday OP. Preferably one without access to the internet. You are weirdly invested in the lives of these strangers. Kate is not your friend...

Mirabai · 13/03/2024 11:24

She edited a family snap, it really is no biggie. Someone on another thread likened it to photoshoppimg Putin on to a picture at the palace. Just beyond batshit.

Except it was clearly a pro shot, not taken by William, for which she had had her hair and makeup done, and then it was badly edited, probably not by Kate altho she claimed it was her, and got pulled by news agencies.

That is a biggie.

jeffgoldblum · 13/03/2024 11:30

You know the frenzy that lead to Diana's tragic death ?
This here and on the other threads , this is how it started and how it looked!

So what.

If it had been an official event and folk were photoshopped in or out fine that would be wrong, clearly. Cuffs, trees, fingers, zips though on a relaxed fanily snap?? It all amounts to fuck all.

It has been a massive overreaction on a global scale. The one good thing to come of it is it is proof whiny Harold is not the only one to experience excess scrutiny and bullying so perhaps he can finally put his persecution complex to bed.

‘Spin’ became popular under Labour

That would be news to the Emperor Augustus

and pretty much every leader ever since then

Grin

I was thinking wtf at that post.

Oh ffs 😬

I have said what I meant. Public recognition of spin

It happened.

Just to recap, so Kate is either in a coma, organising her imminent divorce, homeschooling her children, or had plastic surgery (defo not major abdominal surgery). Have I missed anything?

You missed the most crucial detail: William has a cutout of Kate in the car (it's one of those cute thing they do as a couple when they can't be together).

Unfortunately he keeps forgetting to move it so that it faces the right way around towards random photographers.
No biggie. Kate doesn't mind. It's not yet clear why the entire planet is negatively affected by this oversight.

I believe she was in the car home schooling whilst in a coma

But looking out the window as mid divorce

Yes, not least because lots of journalists hated Alistair Campbell, who'd treated many of them like shite when he was a senior journo

Whereas Tim Bell and Bernard Ingham were by all accounts lovely to their press contacts so less likely to become the story and complained about as spin doctors

I can’t tell if your post is sarcastic or not (there definitely needs to be a sarcasm/irony emoji on Mumsnet); just my opinion but I am chuckling at the description of Tim Bell and Bernard Ingham as being “lovely” to anyone.

But the blurred hands, misaligned jumper wrist and strange top of the skirt all suggest that significant changes have been made. The image is a lie.

And well done for shoe-horning in a Harry reference, when he's not involved at all.

So… the future king and queen of England look as if they’ve been involved in misleading the public. Which inevitably triggers hysteria and wild speculation as to why - divorce, dying, face lift etc, and damages their integrity. When all they had to do is repeat the line she was recovering well and would be back at Easter.

The RF always involves massive overreaction - queen’s birthday, jubilee, funeral, H&M jumping the country - overreaction is what RF media coverage is all about. The palace comms team should know that and not fuck up to this degree.

Are you of the 'she's in a coma with a moon face and a colostomy signing divorce papers as we speak' variety?

Hey, I will indeed shoe horn poor me Harry in as it as perfect example of how they are all in the same boat mad theories wise, he's been dining out on stories it's only poor him for years.

My concern is about the public being manipulated but it’s not by the RF.
This is one of the sanest posts on this sorry topic.
The public are being manipulated and it is not by the royal family.

Of course the RF manipulate the public. They're called 'The Firm' for a reason. I can't believe this is even a question.

No but the point was the term spin and ‘spin doctor’ became more publicly known and discussed during Blair

Yes propaganda or influence is not new but as a concept people were more aware

And I think they used it particularly well which is a factor. They were successful at it

Since then we’ve seen other influential ways to do it

Another comms person who has become the news Dominic Cummings - someone who can help win campaigns with a successful method but became known to the public

The Mail have been up their backsides for years, hiding stories, pitting W &C against H &M for clicks, putting Kate on a pedestal as the perfect woman who can do no wrong. They want something in return for that. They are quite happy to regurgitate puff pieces until the cows come home, pretending a normal woman is the second coming, but as soon as they feel they themselves are being taken for fools, they decide enough is enough. If Kate doesn't want to be seen with a puffy face then that's partly on the DM for holding her to such impossibly high standards.

I agree that the DM is despicable, voracious and misogynistic in the extreme. FWIW though, I heard on LBC that the tabloids were pissed off bc they had stuck to the “no pap shots” of Kate since Xmas, and felt that it had been breached by the appearance of the recent “controversial” photo(s).

BemusedAmerican · 13/03/2024 11:47

Adobe's stock went up yesterday and it is being credited to Photogate. Maybe Adobe masterminded the whole thing. Are they planning on getting sold? 😁

Yes who new looking out of windows implied divorce was imminent. Look at your husband at all times. Look at him! Smile and wave lest you be accused of misleading the world with your dastardly editing.

I think we need oprah at this stage to get to the bottom of the cuff.

Nope, I have no idea what's happening with Kate and I have no theories.

But people don't make such photo shopping amends to an image unless they're making significant changes to the image, which begs the question what are they trying to hide and why are they manipulating the public. Are you of the head buried in the sand variety?

If Harry done done this you would be singing a very different tune.

Lock your gaze on woman ;

Haha at look at him

BemusedAmerican · 13/03/2024 11:49

Harry does it regularly with his hair. Oddly enough he gets away with it.

CurlewKate · 13/03/2024 11:50

People can't have it both ways. Either the RF is doing a fantastic job and is vital in maintaining the stability of the United Kingdom and we'd be up shit creek without them or it's absolutely fine for them to be absent for months and mislead us in egregious ways- that won't have any impact at all on the country's standing in the world. And yes, it is egregious to try to palm us off with an undated composite picture.

Serenster · 13/03/2024 11:50

If Harry done done this you would be singing a very different tune.

Harry and Meghan do do this a lot, including in official images released to the press. It hasn’t created even a tiny fraction of the current noise surrounding Kate, though. So for once “just imagine it was Harry!” counterfactual is probably false.
