Meghan is a bit like a contestant on one of those game shows like I’m a Celebrity get me out of here or Celeb Big Brother. She’s someone who has been given a chance at fame but has been voted off by the public. Yet she simply refuses to leave.
Meghan’s behaviour has alienated her from many: objectively, she isn’t a popular figure. She often comes across as false, pretentious and unlikeable and her behaviour makes people uncomfortable.
Rather than acknowledging this phenomenon and retreating for a few years, taking a back seat, Meghan and Harry keep positioning themselves front and centre - even purchasing opportunities such as this one to give themselves yet more opportunities to tell/sell their story. This is because they can’t seem to imagine a world where the fact they are disliked isn’t at least partly their own fault. It has to be some sort of conspiracy, the media, leaks from the RF, racism, social media etc
And so Meghan uses the forum to talk about herself some more, and to tell the public, yet again, how badly she has been treated and victimised (whilst quietly humble-bragging about her good fortune, and showcasing her expensive wardrobe). Perhaps she secretly thinks her detractors are just jealous and wants to wind them up.
Many people won’t hear talk about her being trolled during her pregnancy and feel empathy - perhaps because they will remember her appearing on Oprah when pregnant and launching indefensible broadsides at the royals. Or they will remember her announcing her own pregnancy on Stillbirth awareness day or accusing Kate of having “baby brain” shortly after Louis was born.
Katie Couric must surely have been trolling her when she encouraged Meghan to talk (yet again!) about her school project letter to Proctor & Gamble. The predictability of Meghan’s spiel and her lack of depth (the word salad) only exacerbates the public’s irritation.
The reality that escapes Meghan (and her supporters) is that for the most part the detractors aren’t jealous. They don’t hate her. They aren’t racists. They simply find her (and Harry) obnoxious and irritating.
This is why Meghan and Harry are losing contracts - and the reason they need to spend vast sums on PR. It’s a losing game though because the public has already voted.
