Photography hobbyists and aficionados unite.

Welcome to the thread where you can display and discuss some of the most iconic photos captured by some of the most talented photographers.

These aren't your average Instagram photos. Oh no. These are the ones that live in your head rent free. The Marie Kondo of photos that spark joy. Where everything in the photo is perfection.

This thread is meant to be fun, light-hearted, and showcase the talents of those behind the lens.

Please do not derail, and do not use this thread to be snarky or have a dig about subjects you don't like, or to other posters. If you cannot keep in the spirit of the thread, then please don't participate or spoil it for others.

Another great ‘in the rain’ shot is the one of prince Phillip on his last official engagement. Rare to see him in a non military hat too.

i love the ones of him in Greek national dress as a boy. The look like they could be from a century before.

And while it’s not an iconic - or even particularly well taken - image, the one of Phillip holding JFK jrs hand at the memorial is so lovely, and the story behind it is really touching. It’s just a dad and a little boy rather than a prince and the son of an assassinated president.

@AliceOlive @SheriffofRottingham isnt it a lovely story? There was quite a few like that that came out when he died and they surprised me at how human and relatable he was.

ArcaneWireless · 07/03/2024 16:44

@MeridianB

That photo of Prince Phillip is just magical. Not perfect by any means but quite quite lovely.

It really is, there was so much more to him than the sensational headlines. He was so humbly devoted to serving his wife too. Something we’ve seen isn’t always a given.

This one really gets to me . Wedding pic of Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and Robert Kennedy. I remember seeing the pic at the time. Then 3 years later they died in a helicopter crash. I know it's not strictly royalty but still...

JFK Jnr not Robert

Of course, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and Princess Soraya Esfandiary-Bakhtiari

Ah, thank you. I didn't read on enough. I don't know who these people are but I will look them up. Thank you.

Fabulous photos

The first time.i went to the National Gallery and saw this at age 10 I guess, I was just so completely gobsmacked and I froze. The power of it still makes me stop in the gallery.

It is beautifully painted and striking but not at all realistic- romanticised Victorian melodrama. The first time I saw it I was gobsmacked too but it isn't how it actually was.

The Queen in the robes of the Order of the Thistle, by Julian Calder. Angela Kelly writes about this in her book. The photoshoot was planned, but on the day it was raining on and off and they just managed to get out and do it in a break between showers - hence the dramatic sky.

I think this is ridiculous. Can't see what the photographer was trying to achieve. HM The Queen looks irritated more than anything.

Three generations of Royal Women on horseback

If I remember correctly The Queen is riding Tinkerbell, Princess Anne is riding her son Peter Pan and Zara is riding her daughter Tigerlily, both homebreds.

Stunning colours on the horses.

This drawing of Anne Boleyn is currently on display at the Holbein exhibition Gallery next door to Buckingham Palace - lots of Tudor royal portraits to admire. always wonder what she did to annoy Holbein as it isn't a very flattering portrait!

Anne Boleyn by Hans Holbein

A sketch by Hans Holbein the Younger thought by some scholars (but not all) to be of Anne Boleyn (c. 1501-1536 CE), the second wife of Henry VIII of England (r. 1509-1547 CE). (Royal Collection)

BenefitWaffle · 07/03/2024 17:19

@londonmummy1966 I thought Holbein was into realism rather than flattering portraits. So maybe this is how she actually looked?

LuluBlakey1 · 07/03/2024 17:27

This is one of my favourites of George. So cute.

I think this is ridiculous. Can't see what the photographer was trying to achieve. HM The Queen looks irritated more than anything.

According to Angela Kelly, she was a bit, because everyone had been waiting around all day hoping for the weather to clear up, then when there was a break in the rain they rushed out, but there wasn't time to keep trying for the perfect shot, because it was going to rain again at any moment, so the Queen was very much 'if we're going to do this, let's just get on and do it'. But I don't think the big smile would have been right for the setting.

I imagine the photographer wanted the Thistle robes against a background of Scottish scenery.
