Photography hobbyists and aficionados unite.

Welcome to the thread where you can display and discuss some of the most iconic photos captured by some of the most talented photographers.

These aren't your average Instagram photos. Oh no. These are the ones that live in your head rent free. The Marie Kondo of photos that spark joy. Where everything in the photo is perfection.

This thread is meant to be fun, light-hearted, and showcase the talents of those behind the lens.

Please do not derail, and do not use this thread to be snarky or have a dig about subjects you don't like, or to other posters. If you cannot keep in the spirit of the thread, then please don't participate or spoil it for others.

Mia and the handbag pic is the one for me!

Also, there is a pic above of the King and Queen (former) of Spain, I think it's either their wedding or the coronation. Anyway, the crowns are held on a kind of "stick" where the crown hovers over their heads ready to be positioned in place. I thought, what a brilliant idea. Just saying....

That's lovely but bittersweet isn't it

Not having a go because I like its playful conspiratorial mood too, but I feel more than world-weary royals have a cheeky moment, it looks more like teen boys playing dress up, because it is!

Didn't she threaten to handbag him???

Yes, she did. She pretended to hit him with her clutch bag 😂

It sounds bad, but it was funny.

In the first episode, they were shown that muddy picture of a jockey and Emlyn Hughes guessed it was John Reid. But it was actually Princess Anne.

When Princess Anne joined as a guest, in the picture round they were shown another picture of a jockey.
As a joke, Emlyn Hughes said "oh it's Princess John Reid"
Princess Anne picked up her handbag and pretended to take a swipe at him. 😁

It's on YouTube somewhere

Your post reminded me of a picture of one of Queen Victoria's daughters who was the dead spit of Princess Beatrice, @YetMoreNewBeginnings . Unfortunately I couldn't find that particular example, but I did come across this in the search, which is quite interesting.

Are these the most striking royal doppelgängers of all time?

A pair of princesses, a queen’s clone and a right royal resemblance – are you seeing double?

This one of the young Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip dancing. So happy and carefree.

This is great. It is weird to see Philip in that outfit though. A reminder he wasn't born in a suit!

Meghan

I’ve never seen this one before. I don’t think it’s a very good likeness and the costume is odd. Lots of wonderful photos of her though.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 07/03/2024 12:07

Pretty on the fence when it comes to royalty discussion on MN Katherine pitted against Meghan generally so can I just say what a lovely thread this is and how refreshing it is.

Some very beautiful pictures, thanks for starting OP

My mum had 2 up close brushes with royalty.
In 1960, Princess Margaret married Antony Armstrong-Jones at Westminster Abby. My mother was one of the florists who did the flowers for the pew ends, and also the bridesmaid's bouquets. One of the bridesmaids was Princess Anne. On rehearsal day, the day before the wedding, mum was down on the floor fiddling with the pew end flowers and young Princess Anne ran up and asked her to help her with one of her socks which was all twisted. Which mum did 🙂(not sure which one is Anne in this photo)

I think Anne is standing next to Margaret.

Not a photo story but allegedly when Margaret attended a formal dinner in a Mess she asked for the Loyal Toast to happen at the start of the meal, no-one could smoke until after the Loyal Toast which was usually at the end!

Goldenbrowntexturelikesun · 07/03/2024 10:45

Wouldn’t say it’s the most talented of photo’s taken but it’s was definitely taken just at the right moment!

This photo just makes me sad.

UrsulaBelle · 07/03/2024 12:22

This photo of Anne at the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games opening ceremony is iconic imo. In the days before digital cameras. The photographer waited for her to look up.

I once read that someone once asked Prince Charles, as he then was, if they could have the Loyal Toast before dessert, for the same reason. He said a most emphatic No!

I've been interpreting 'iconic' to mean an image which says something about a moment in time or a personality or a relationship. Will post more later when I'm on my laptop.

I have never seen so many pictures of a public figure smoking on the job as I have of Margrethe! Apparently she gave up the habit last year after surgery on her back. After 63 years!

And in 2006 it was announced she would only do it in private.

Here is young Margrethe lighting Queen Ingrids cigarette. I have a feeling we won't see this with Kate and Charlotte.

I think the photo of Diana at the Taj Mahal is iconic

I think it's an "iconic" photo because of the reasons Abouttimeforanamechange has said - it says something about a moment in time or a personality or a relationship.

The photo itself might not be "technically" brilliant (I'm not a photographer, so have no idea if this is the correct wording).

But the history and story is quite moving. If not sad.

Not a photo but a video: Queen Elizabeth in a mini James Bond film for the 2012 Olympics in London is pretty iconic.

Young Elizabeth and Philip were a beautiful couple

My Dad had to sit alone at my mum's funeral - he was 91 and died himself a month later. We were only allowed ten people and no singing and no wake - had to take him straight back to the convalescent home and he didn't understand why I couldn't go in with him. He thought I wasn't bothered about him any more. Absolutely heartbreaking. His funeral was the same. Such dreadful times.

Sorry, didn't mean to bring the thread down - I am really enjoying it. (Mum would have liked it too.)

Ah that broke my heart to read :(
I'm so sorry your goodbyes were even harder than they should have been xx

That terrible period of time has a lot to answer for!

Just gives me a mental image of a little.gang (an Imperia?) of Queens nipping behind the royal bike sheds for a quick fag between courses at banquets, swapping eyeshadow and trying on each other's shoes . . . 😂

Fortunately the female monarchs about at the moment don't give off any "mean girl" vibes (Yes - I'm looking at YOU, Queen Ranavalona I), so hopefully it will all just be admiring each other's tiaras and asking where they got their sashes.

Not the photo itself but the Queen's outfit. Beautiful and dramatic. The blue sash and tiara are perfect.

Another painting one. I've always loved this triple portrait of Charles I by van Dyke. You really get a feeling for what he really looked like. Fascinating. What an interesting thread, I hadn't realised how much I miss the Queen.
