I am pleased to let you know that Prince William is on good form, visiting my home town today, meeting our football team and pulling a pint in the local. He clearly prioritised his engagements this week and this was far too important to miss⚽️🤣

Calm down love

Why should she? , she was mocked for not understanding a name used to insult people because it's not used where she comes from !
Told google is her friend dismissively, then when she did in fact google discovered that no , actually it isn't some harmless comment!

AliceOlive · 04/03/2024 18:48

Harry could have done a much better job teaching a few people about unconscious bias.

Christ no

What’s your secret, dear?

It turns out I do have access to google! Thanks so much for the suggestion.

I am not surprised to find OED explaining that:

toe-rag is considered derogatory

Also, you might want to check the origins a bit more deeply. It has both classist and racist connotations. The classist connotation - mocking the poor - was obvious. But it’s also racial in nature as it relates to the Tuareg people.

Language evolves as does what people consider appropriate in terms of usage, no matter what words you may have used to insult others in your youth.

Probably good to know what the words really mean if you are going to throw them around. Like you said, google is available to everyone.

I have googled this myself and can only find one source saying what you are confidently purporting to be the 'truth' of the source of the word, which is this Wikipedia-esce site, hardly seems reliable. Every other source seems to be referencing cloths used to wrap feet in the days before socks.

Perhaps yoga ....

You clearly don't need it with the amount of stretching you're doing!

Daisyislazy · 04/03/2024 18:49

Not constantly getting g my knickers in a twist

AliceOlive · 04/03/2024 18:49

Google better! It’s out there.

Really now? How is that?

Roussette · 04/03/2024 18:51

@AliceOlive

Well done on your extensive research. Where do you want to go with this now?
Report that 'awful' term to MNHQ?
I should if I were you

Daisyislazy · 04/03/2024 18:52

As a Middle Eastern poster I’m familiar with the Tuareg as a slur connotation unfortunately 😔

Samcro · 04/03/2024 18:56

Good grief so now toerag is offensive.

I just wondered if it might make you feel better given its such a terrible term even though I used to call my children that at times, Along with scamp, pickle etc
Please don't look those words up, I can't cope 🤣

jeffgoldblum · 04/03/2024 18:56

I would think the polite response when using a word that means something different in different places is to acknowledge on move on !
Not patronise
And fyi toe rag is a very common Irish slang for homeless , poor people couldn't afford shoes and had to wrap wraps around their feet !

AliceOlive · 04/03/2024 18:56

@OliverTwisted I’m sorry to even bring it up. I really didn’t know but had some sense it sounded off.

So I actually have a bit of sensitivity about that also for a couple of reasons that I wouldn’t share here.
