www.thedailybeast.com/prince-harry-and-meghan-markle-actually-were-dangerously-chased-in-manhattan-nypd-says

So they weren't lying and instead the NYPD were lying.

I wonder if this will be picked up by any of the papers here.

I certainly didn't believe them at the time. The trouble is, that if you exaggerate and make stuff up, people will think you're doing that all the time.

😒

I have never seen passengers so “terrified” as Meghan and Doria -,one grinning and the other texting.

I agree. I think it's a shame that people have this attitude that this treatment should be expected and should be sucked up and not complained about

Feel free to complain until your heart is content to the paparazzi who were actually involved, and also to Harry’s security team who were responsible for his safety, as well as Harry himself for deciding to put himself in such a scenario, and to whoever else that was involved in the key decisions of the day. And also be sure to complain to all the super fans and Scobie- type hanger-ons and all the other enablers of this type of celebrity culture as well as the celebrities themselves for perpetuating such toxicity. Why should the general public on a parenting website be held to account over this? And why are you completely swallowing cherry picked parts of a leaked letter? Who knows what the whole report says - maybe there was also culpability on Harry’s security teams side too, for making such piss poor decisions on the day. And from what I remember, it was the hyperbolic exaggeration that was mocked at the time (thanks to Scoby) I don’t remember people saying the event hadn’t taken place at all, just that it was exaggerated, probably to bolster his case to the home office. Funnily enough they’ve leaked this on the same day as the verdicts release, hmmm I wonder why 😆

Ok...thanks for your opinion. What does your post have to do with mine re: the general treatment of the women in that family?

It wasn't "leaked" by the way. It's part of the ruling from Harry's case today, and reported on.

This 👏

and the security team that decided putting them in a yellow cab, with an unknown driver, was a great idea to shake off the paps. Hard to believe they are using that much advertised celebrity outing in New York city, as an example of why they should have tax payer funded armed police protection in the UK.

‘not complained about’

i was pointing out you’re free to complain, but perhaps there are better targets for your complaints. Such as the parties directly involved, including Meghan and Harry.

Exactly. A more cynical person might think they’d tried to set it up in a certain way to make a point. Funnily enough when they want to fly under the radar they’re able to visit pretty much anywhere they choose to in the world, without reporting or incident.

Nobody wearing a seatbelt....

Is there actually footage of H&M in a car being chased by paparazzi and not wearing seatbelts?
I think that would be really shocking.

WandaWonder · 28/02/2024 23:05

So why didnt the driver pull up, stop and call the police?

HeddaGarbled · 28/02/2024 23:27

the NYPD has said the city not only holds enough evidence to arrest two people for reckless endangerment, but has also upgraded its security protocol for visits by Prince Harry and Meghan following the incident last May

This interests me.

There seem to me to be two different security issues for H&M. There’s the risk from terrorists and extremists etc. And then there’s the risk from paparazzi and fans.

I can see why the NYPD might be involved in protecting people from the first type of risk, but surely the second type is what all celebs pay private security for. Why would the NYPD assume responsibility for that? Unless they’re referring to the risk to the general public when H&M are in town?

Viviennemary · 28/02/2024 23:46

The point is they have lied about stuff so little wonder theyre not being believed about anything. Actual wedding the day before not the meaningless ceremony we mugs paid £30 million for. What a pair of ungrateful idiots. Nothing bit whine whine whine. Poor poor us.

80mph in Manhattan 😆

On bicycles

Checken · 28/02/2024 23:50

Actually people weren’t wrong. Harry / Scooby did exaggerate. The report doesn’t confirm that there was a catastrophic near fatal 2 hour 80mph car chase.

It uses the words reckless and inappropriate, we know that’s quite typical behaviour for paparazzis. It wasn’t unusual. Bigger question is why did Harry put himself and his wife in that situation in the first place?

HighQueenOfTheFarRealm · 29/02/2024 00:14

Pardon my ignorance but they're famous and attending an event. There's bound to be paps and interest in how they're dressed or whatever. It's safer to let them take their pics and just ignore them.
I just don't get all the risk taking and panic about it.

No there is no footage of H&M in a car being chased by paparazzi, which is kind of the point of the claims of exaggeration - something like that happening in NY would have resulted in camera phone footage from New Yorkers going about their evening. There is a still photograph of the 3 of them sat in the back of the car, as described in the post I replied to. Google it and you will see no seatbelt being worn by Meghan.

Harry intentionally included the letter in his case because he wanted the public to read it.

skullbabe · 29/02/2024 00:40

This was the statement by Harry and Meghan's spokesperson

“Last night, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Ms Ragland were involved in a near catastrophic car chase at the hands of a ring of highly aggressive paparazzi. This relentless pursuit, lasting over two hours, resulted in multiple near collisions involving other drivers on the road, pedestrians and two NYPD officers. While being a public figure comes with a level of interest from the public, it should never come at the cost of anyone’s safety. Dissemination of these images, given the ways in which they were obtained, encourages a highly intrusive practice that is dangerous to all in involved.”

You will note that there was Omid Scobie in an interview on Newsnight where he said the above and mentioned that it was a stop start situation - there were parts where they were stuck in traffic and periods when they were racing and said there were times they went up to 80mph. Based off this people discounted the whole event when it was more than evident at the time what had happened. Scobie is not their spokesperson anymore than Carolyn Durand is (who many people conveniently forget also wrote Finding Freedom - the book in which H&M provided information to help write). He therefore, as a journalist, will and has got things wrong. As have other royal journalists.

I find it interesting that the solution that some have for H&M is to never leave their house or go out.

skullbabe · 29/02/2024 00:48

Why should the information in the letter be kept from the public?

That is a lttle unfair.

Their car was swarmed.

MMs default is to smile in public but she clearly did not know what to do.

I laugh at funerals. It is awful, I am so fearful of it but it kind of takes over.

Doria looked very strained.

Who knows how you would react in that situation.

WandaWonder · 28/02/2024 23:05

So why didnt the driver pull up, stop and call the police?

They did. Not only , they went into a police station to try and wait it out.

They were being escorted by a police car as well as their own security. The statement today said the police were forced into error by the reckless behaviour of the paps.

These guys are very agressive - we know this.

They did.

They announced their appearence before the event, walked the red carpet, gave the shots etc as you say.

But it all fell apart when they did not want the paps to follow them to where they were staying. It was a friends apartment apparently. (You can imagine the million stories - Haz and Megs stay with xxx friend worth xxxx amount xxxx wives xxxx lovers who flaunt their bodies and so on. )

They have had a massive change in behaviour since then. They rarely announce appearences in advance, they show up and disappear again. They also seems to have the whole leaking thing under control .

it is fun to watch them work it out, they are fairly impressive actually.
