What's the deal with Andrew and Fergie?

Does anyone know? Are they a couple, or just good friends? I know they live next to each other. Doesn't Fergie have the Queen's Corgies?

There is absolutely no way the queen would have had an affair. She was all about duty.

Absolutely this. It's a long stretch to assume that "she liked Porchy" would inevitably lead to "she got pregnant with his baby ". HM The Queen was not stupid by any means and she lived by very strong values.

She also had a three year relationship with Paddy Mcnally who was a much older and very rich businessman.

That was long before she married Andrew though.

The thing about Andrew that many younger Mnetters probably don’t realise or are not old enough to remember is when he was younger in his 20s/30s he was portrayed in the media as an eligible, handsome and more modern face of the royal family, but with an obvious very unfortunate roving eye for unsuitable relationships (remember Koo Stark, anyone?). This was particularly apparent when he was in the forces flying helicopters and taking part in the Falklands War. He then married Sarah F, who also seemed to be quite a character and much less stuffy than the more conventional Diana and Charles.

Obviously the various scandals, unfortunate ageing, and very bad behaviour of both of them changed all that opinion and we now see more clearly who they are (and probably always were) - posh, uncaring, unintelligent, entitled, uncharming, shallow and pompous.

No doubt the media like to portray the young ‘spares’ in this particular way - young, dashing, handsome characters who help fill up their newspaper columns with their antics. I have no doubt that Harry will probably age just as badly in 20 years we will see him very differently once he’s bald and paunchy with a couple of failed marriages and associated behind him. An increasingly sad and pathetic figure as he continues to bleat about how unfair his privileged has been.

I 100% agree with this tbh. Harry is literally treading the same path as Andrew in so many ways. I hope his poor decisions don’t involve sex trafficking teenagers though.

I wonder if PH was invited to that memorial service or not. Think it was a family engagement?

Sorry about quoting myself. But I just wanted to add you can also see today’s media trying to create a similar narrative around ‘cheeky’ Louis. And of course the similar stories around Princess Margaret.

I suspect the ‘establishment’ is uncomfortable with disrespectful coverage of those in direct line to the throne so gossip and speculation around the ‘spares’ is felt an easier option and less destabilising for the mainstream media.

The trouble is most people are sucked in to these narratives and it is a personal frustration of mine that many people can’t see how they are being manipulated.

It just feels a bit like unsophisticated pantomime. With people being slotted into roles for the audience, heroes and villains - when in fact most individuals are not all good or all bad.

I personally don’t hold the Royal Family in high regard, but I sometimes feel genuinely sorry for them when people are using them to fulfil their own need for specific characterisation of the individuals. This is particularly obvious when looking at the two camps supporting either Catherine or Meghan, I suspect they both have flaws, have made mistakes but are nonetheless trying their best most of the time.

Roussette · 02/03/2024 18:51

Yes I agree. And I abhor the labelling of the children because it will stick

All sorts of people have a lot to answer for in that regard....media, bloody Lorraine Kelly, chat show hosts etc

User442681bgt · 02/03/2024 20:06

I hate it as well when people talk about the children - any of them. I was labelled as shy and backwards by family members and it really affected me.

Oop yes got my dates wrong,

This got me thinking- I hope this isn’t too much of a zombie thread! - was there the same importance placed around Andrew marrying a virgin in the same way Charles HAD to?

If Fergie had had a significant 3 year relationship - with an older man -prior to marrying Andrew it is highly likely she wasn’t a virgin. However, in the early-mid 80s, as the second son Andrew was still quite prominent in the royal family so I would have thought that the rules about marrying a virgin would hold fast for him too?

PrettyFlyforaMaiTai · 14/08/2024 19:16

Didn’t he split up with Koo Stark because of her unsuitable past?

RunAwayTurnAwayRunAwayTurnAway · 14/08/2024 19:42

I think maybe I can remember from some Sunday paper supplement from the past that QEII personally adored Koo and invited her to Balmoral and lent her wellies but Koo hated the outdoorsy lifestyle.

What's the gossip about Andrew's parentage?

Easily found on the internet.

No, I don't think there was the same expectation for Andrew. I'm not sure if Fergie lived with someone or had a significant relationship with him but not under the same roof. I'll see what google says. I didn't read every newspaper at the time but I remember a conversation at work. I can't speak for how everyone in the land thought about it but I didn't think Fergie's past was of great concern. Andrew was called Randy Andy and he's never dropped me a line to tell me if he was a virgin when he got married, or not.

Did Charles HAVE to marry a virgin or did it happen that when he was over 30 and he hadn't yet settled down with anyone, there was a pressure on him to get serious about it and a woman without much of a past wouldn't be a cause for the press to speculate and create embarrassment?

Anne had married first of the four. By the time it was Edward's time he had his own apartment in Buckingham Palace and Sophie could stay over.

I think she'd lived with someone - Paddy Something? Possibly a racing driver?
There was definitely a touch of the "Hmm... she has a Past" in the news reports at the time.

CathyorClaire · 15/08/2024 20:48

Charles had spawned the heir and spare secured the succession by the time Andrew got married. DoY and his doings were basically irrelevant.

It has been claimed Diana was medically examined to check her virginity, but I take that with a dollop of salt - it's more likely to have been as you say.

Didn’t her uncle make a statement insisting that Diana was a virgin ?
