I think posters write that to let other posters know they are far too cool / superior/ whatever to read the Daily Mail . Amazing given so many people quote from it as they just happened to come across an article !

It seems to be the most commonly read news site on here, but let's be cool and call it "The Fail" 😎

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar · 30/01/2024 22:06

I did have to chuckle on another thread at one regular cool cat crowing about Harry’s crusade against the hateful Murdoch press in one breath, and then crowing about a pro Sussex piece in The Times in the next.

The post somewhere above about the evil DM destroying the Sussex Netflix deal - because they have printed an appeal from Survivors International to the couple, about an atrocity that all the “naice”, liberal papers like the Guardian have ignored, is a particular doozy. Even after all the papers, including the Guardian, think the story is significant enough to take up and credit the DM for first reporting it.

Brenda = HMQEII
Keith= HRH TDoEd
Brian= HRH PoW, now KCIII
Cheryl = Diana, PoW (this one was genius, IMO)

My late father's name for HMQEII was Old Scowler, and whenever Pss Margaret was on the news he would holler OFFICIALLY A DWARF at the telly/radio.

In Lady Glenconner's book she said that Princess Margaret was hurt when she was a little girl and her Grandma used to look at her and comment that she was still small and hadn't grown much. It's difficult for a short person to get taller.

He could have shouted, "Officially a very pretty woman for most of her life."

I just find it very cringey 😭 it’s like people who say “sheeple” or something

Pivoting to something altogether more trivial. Seems those Suits cast members who were having fun at the Golden Globes also scored a gig doing the Super Bowl commercial. I am guessing this is quite a big deal for actors from a minor show. The networks are really touting this reboot. It could really give MM a boost if she returns too. I will feel sorry for her if she doesn’t get the opportunity- it really is her name that sold it to Netflix and their audience. If she turns it down out of misplaced pride, then she’ll be foolish. I imagine she could demand a very high salary for agreeing to appear, the audience figures would be guaranteed if she did.

Some may think it cool.

Some might think they are - in their parlance - mucking fuppets.

I write fail it’s not as I think I’m being cool or edgey, but indicating I’m fully aware of their reputation and do not see them as the oracle of truth or serious journalism. That doesn’t mean they always get it wrong though, clearly.

its really not a big deal is it?

Isn't it just!

I don't actually read the Mail, except when I go and see my journalist friend who loves it. But when I do, I thoroughly enjoy it in a 'forbidden fruit' kind of way. Mind you, I do think The Guardian is the DM of the left, too, but frankly it's nowhere near as much fun. I've seen many examples of bias/manipulation/suppression of news from that hallowed organ, despite what its fans might think.

I take an immediate dislike to anyone who passes judgment just because someone reads the forbidden DM. Don't necessarily like it, but I hate the was it brings out the holier-than-thou brigade.

MaturingCheeseball · 31/01/2024 13:43

I’ve been droning on for years on MN about those who scorn the DM and then are rather surprisingly au fait with every article and all the columnists…

Similarly some on the rf threads mention some of the odder stuff said about H&M, which they have clearly read on Tattle/Reddit.

Know thine enemy, I suppose, but at least admit it!!

WinnieTheW0rm · 31/01/2024 14:42

it really is her name that sold it to Netflix and their audience

Suits has been on Netflix since 2017 (series 1-6 were on a terrestrial channel in UK, Netflix thereafter, I think the earlier series might have gone on to Netflix a bit earlier than that, depending on catch-up arrangements). So they first bought it before M had anything to do with H.

It might have been a reason to push it during the writers strike of 2023, when there was a scarcity of new material (and of course Archewell had a deal with them by then, so that makes obvious commercial sense)

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar · 31/01/2024 15:03

@WinnieTheW0rm I was thinking sold the idea of a revival/reboot, rather than the original streaming arrangement. I can’t think of any other minor, not particularly rated and long running soap/drama series having this sort of second chance without a whole new cast/concept being involved.

I very much doubt it would have got the viewing figures it did or been pushed to the fore without MM (presumably Netflix would rather promote their own homegrown shows). I thought the co stars at the Golden Globes were a bit shitty about MM (and I am far from a fan) and could have been more gracious and better prepared to answer questions about her - her deal with Netflix and global profile is now giving them all a second bite at the cherry, and they know it.

On the other hand, you reap what you sow….

OP posts:
JSMill · 31/01/2024 15:53

In what way were they shitty about MM and why do you think that?
I'm not sure MM was the reason why so many people watched it recently. Ds2 binge watched over the holidays in spite of MM as he really doesn't approve of how she and H have behaved. He said it was just really easy watching and there was nothing else to watch anyway!

I respectfully disagree with all of this.

The strikes, as mentioned above, meant that there was a lack of original material to watch, so a 9 series show got an audience it might not otherwise have got. I'm unsure what Meghan had to do with this. Her association might have got some initial interest, yes, but people aren't going to persevere with a long running show unless they like it. It's not like Meghan is a brilliant actress, or that her name automatically means success. After all, she couldn't manage to get sustained high audience figures for her own podcast, which is why it got dropped.

I'm also not sure why you think her former castmates were so unpleasant about her. We have no clue what went on between them, and in most cases they hadn't seen her for years. Would you want to be quizzed about someone you probably last spoke to 5 years ago?

What exactly was so awful about their behaviour?

ArcaneWireless · 31/01/2024 18:25

Suits passed me by on terrestrial telly - it must have clashed with something else. I struggle enough to get through things I want to watch so I don’t have ‘fancy’ telly.

Would I watch if it was shown again? Probably. I like a ‘don’t have to concentrate too much’ drama - it helps me wind down.

It must be hard for her cast mates - any new venture will be awash with Meghan speculation and it must feel as though you are not significant in comparison.

I can understand being slightly dismissive or being less than gracious and wanting to shift the conversation on for a few reasons.

I do understand why Meghan questions could get tiresome.

jeffgoldblum · 31/01/2024 18:35

I'm not interested to be honest, the only legal drama with lawyers I enjoyed was boston legal and I'm not sure if watch that again.

ArcaneWireless · 31/01/2024 18:47

I’m easy pleased Jeff. 😊

I’m as giddy as a pickle as Law and Order is back.

I’ve watched many over the years. I’m looking forward to Your Honour being on normal tv. Fingers crossed.

He captivates me. Watching him in Human Is sealed the deal.

@IcedPurple I have just lost a long reply to you on my bastard phone updating the page, so will reply again, but probably not as comprehensively.

IMO, Suits is crap. Crap plots, crap dialogue and crap acting (by the all). I am basing this on a very unscientific sample of looking at bits from episodes across each series. I agree that the writers’ strike provided perfect conditions for box set series to be explored, but this one was heavily pushed by Netflix, and I believe MM was the hook in for the curious. I guess we will never know what would have been if MM did not have her current fame. But there is so much other great stuff to watch so why Suits?

Gina Torres has done nothing of note since Suits, and her spin off bombed. IMO, she is being given a second bite of the cherry on a much bigger stage, and one she would not be occupying but for her famous colleague who she was happy to call a friend. I don’t doubt she can’t stand MM, but a little more grace and tact about the phone number would have been classier.

Just my opinion.

I think there's a lot of assumptions there. The Suits reboot hasn't been confirmed, has it?

As for the "second bite of the cherry on a much bigger stage" again you're assuming this has all to do with Meghan, even though during the past 4 years of 'freedom' she hasn't made a success of anything unconnected to her two years as a royal. And I disagree that there's a lot of 'great stuff' to watch but I guess that's subjective. Also, when looking at the 'Suits' viewing figures which have been so hyped up, I think we have to take into account that there were well over 100 episodes. So obviously the 'hours watched' are going to be much higher than the usual Netflix drama, which is usually 2 or 3 series of maybe 8 episodes tops. Not saying Suits wasn't successful last year, but I'm not sure it was the streaming phenomenon some are making it out to be.

As for Gina Torres, what would you have liked her to say?

Thunderbird7 · 31/01/2024 20:38

I thought Suits was rubbish but each to their own

Talk about dismissing a well-regarded actress. Gina Torres is an actress who has been working constantly in and films for 20 years. She’s been involved in some 10 projects since Suits finished in 2018, including currently appearing in a series called 911 Lonestar. I’ve known who she was since seeing her in Angel and then Firefly/Serenity many years ago.

He was however right on 'The Americans' and 'Ozark'

Both awesome,

As an outsider Ii.e. I know neither H not M ) my personal impressions are

  1. I thought it was so tone deaf of H to say his father had cut him financially when they decided to move and earn squillions . He is a man in his 30s with no doubt decent inheritance from Great Granny , Grandma and his mother and had been given a lovely house with excellent security.
  2. I am not sure they gave it long enough to see if they could find a place in the RF - so e.g. Commonwealth ( which I think was on offer but who knows. ) I do agree with the No to half in half out and I think the late Queen called that right.

So to some extent I think they have made their bed etc. I don't dislike them but I suspect they could have made some better decisions.

Suits - never seen it - probably never will . I am sure MM was good in it 😁
