How about, in this job, we wear a hat when we are told to wear a hat, and certainly if the Queen is wearing one. You don’t get to dictate the terms of your employment. This is not bullying, it is etiquette and part of the job description. We provide help with styling, sourcing etc, all you need to do is ask. Now stop complaining and get on with it.

Looks like it was the Endgame for OS. Bit like a damp Catherine Wheel - initially a bit of a fuss then dropped off the fence.

Regarding hats or no hats, wasn't M offered someone to advise her about royal etiquette etc and she turned the offer down, saying H would tell her everything she needed to know?
The thing I have noticed about M, both while a working royal and after, is that she often seems to be dressed differently to others around her. I mean, over dressed while others are casually dressed or casual when others are formally dressed. I still can't believe how often she wore all black to royal occasions, especially in the summer.

QueenOfHertz · 27/01/2024 13:08

Sorry. I’m going to be like the PP wotgotbanned and keep at it. This is the last post and then I’ll move on, I promise.

But bearing in mind in RL I accidentally knocked out the nephew of a major Royal Duchess with a cricket ball when I was 10, I know these circles and communication is all about subtlety, veiled references, hints and only inferring what you mean rather than saying it directly, I can genuinely see that Meghan didn’t take any hints and was left confused. So when the poor boy was on the ground, his friends glared at me and the adults politely suggested I go and look for tea and cake.

That said, it is clear she did not accept any help nor advice and that was a major mistake.

Anyway, cheerfully moving on

An ear worm to fit under one’s hat.

I think it’s something she finds difficult rather than she likes to be different. So she tries really hard, and often gets it wrong.

on saying that though, I thought the skirt and cami in Jamaica were lovely , and looking at Brian robbins wife and the lady in the prime minister photo with the black dress with diamonte detail I think she got it right.

but it was so long it was dragging on the ground by several inches, and getting really dirty. I’m surprised she didn’t trip.

I can recall one year when Ascot took place in very hot weather. Diana wanted to go without tights because of the heat and when she said as much to a friend, friend asked why she couldn't. Apparently Diana said that her MIL would be wearing them along with the hat and the gloves and the heels so it was as much as her life was worth to break that dress protocol.

If someone says 'for this engagement HM will be wearing a hat,' that's a bloody big hint that's saying 'And so will you.'

JSMill · 27/01/2024 13:24

@Gardeningtime goodness that skirt is too long. It's not sitting as it should be because it's too long for her. I like the dress the woman next to her is wearing. I'd love one like that.

I love that cream dress, I think it looks great for the event, not overly fussy and understated, something you would wear on a beach holiday going out for a nice dinner in the evening. She is a stylist. Meghan's dress had a long train and it is way too long for her which is why she had to hold it up when she was walking.

themessygarden · 27/01/2024 13:30

Ah that takes me back @JaneJeffer

AliceOlive · 27/01/2024 13:33

I do think from that photo that the dress was too long. Otherwise I really like it. Also love the white one.

JSMill · 27/01/2024 13:34

The bottom half of the cream dress is sheer which I think will make it lighter to wear in the hot weather. It's perfect for the occasion.

Maybe she was put off wearing hats when that brown one got likened to the pop emoji. Bit harsh on my opinion 😆Brown hat

I thought it was rather too like the poo emoji. Ditto when Camilla wore one quite similar (though hers was a paler brown)

mrsmingleton · 27/01/2024 15:41

There is wearing a hat though and then ... early days for her though and maybe this is the kind of thing she didn't "get"

meercat23 · 27/01/2024 16:05

Some people seem able to wear any hat and look good, others never really look right in a hat. I am one of the latter and have never felt or looked right in a hat, any hat. While I wouldn't say that Meghan never looks right in a hat, I don't think she is entirely comfortable in hats or would choose to wear them unless it was demanded by the occasion. I think sometimes too she has chosen a style that is not particularly easy to wear, that brown one for example. Looks like a simple style but it is quite unforgiving.

JSMill · 27/01/2024 16:23

Every time I see that photo of M sticking her tongue out at Sandringham, I think it must be fake as it is such odd behaviour.
I wonder if M, as an American, struggled with the idea of wearing a hat at formal occasions. Americans don't do that, do they?

jeffgoldblum · 27/01/2024 16:24

Jackie Kennedy always wore a hat ( as far as I know!)

Good point! But that was a long time ago.

That was a generation or two ago. I think the last first lady who wore a hat regularly was Nancy Reagan.

And the sort of hats the Royals tend to wear are often a lot more ostentatious than people generally choose - it's back to the Queen's old adage that she needed to be seen

MrsFinkelstein · 27/01/2024 17:15

Wasn't Meghan given a fairly substantial dossier with protocol pointers and help?

It's The Sun, so take with all the salt you want, but I'm sure I've read that elsewhere too.

That was 6m before the wedding, and they'd already stretched protocol for her by inviting her to Christmas at Sandringham before the wedding.

It's one thing to be so loved up you think your fiance can solve all your problems, and another to be in your late 30s, about to get married for the 2nd time, not just to anyone but a Prince of the most famous Royal Family in the world - and to turn your nose up at the help offered. Not just the dossier, but to Sophie Wessex and The Queen's own Equerry.

It's the definition of setting yourself up to fail.

Meghan 'given dossier on how to be a duchess BEFORE wedding,' insider claims

MEGHAN Markle was given a 30-point dossier about her role six months before her wedding, sources insist.  They say the Duchess of Sussex’s claim that she was given inadequate preparation…

I thought I'd do a bit of a pivot here.

There was much made in OS Endgame of H rushing to do stuff once they left the RF. However it does seem like H dips in and quickly out. - I'm thinking particularly of Travalyst - google it and first line is 'led by Prince Harry etc', (at least on my google list).

How does hopping on a private jet to go to a concert, to go to a film help Travalyst's profile?
