No you don’t, and The Hill is a pretty sensible news source. I thought it was a bit mad on first reading, but it gives food for thought.
China and Russia have a huge interest in seeing the dismantling of cross national unions that mean countries having each other’s backs in terms of trade, law and security. They also have an interest in getting a strategic foothold in certain geographical areas. I would have thought the Caribbean would be a huge draw, with its proximity to the US and relatively poor economic status that makes it vulnerable to the bigger hitters.
Jamaica wants to rid itself of the RF as it’s heads of state, which would entail its highest court no longer being The Privy Council of England and Wales, but the Caribbean Court or Justice or setting up its own system. So there is a sphere of influence a third party country might wish to exploit. I think Holness is possibly looking to leave the Commonwealth as well, do one more loosened tie up for grabbing.
H&M are just useful idiots to higher powers. On both sides, they may be useful idiots for the British government for all we know. And they can do this unknowingly, just by being who they are with their high profile and millions of devoted followers, and by getting involved in causes, the ramifications of which I very much doubt they really understand. Their involvement in the movement towards censorship in their partnership with The Aspen Institute being the prime example, and another one that plays right into the hands of countries like China and Russia for whom censorship is a primary political tool.
So yes, somewhat of a sensational article, but the sentiment is not without merit.
By the way, I have no problems whatsoever with Jamaica going for full independence, I don’t know why a referendum hasn’t been held yet, but imagine it will happen in the next 12-18 months as it’s election year for them next year. I suspect part of it may be waiting for the uk elections to happen, and seeing if a Labour govt might be more conducive to a talk about reparations.
