Meghan, Duchess of Sussex spotted out and about, part 3

Part 3 of a nice, unproblematic thread to discuss some of the fab outfits from the Duchess of Sussex, and some of the many great causes she (and Harry) and Archewell supports. h/t @queentim for the original threads.

I really liked this outfit and the way the skirt flowed as she walked - really good choice and quite pared back compared to some other people on the red carpet.

I liked her outfit but she (both of them) looked really a bit forced and uncomfortable. They did not look they were there to enjoy themselves but to promote themselves. Which they did 😅

Blahdeblah12345 · 26/01/2024 23:03

Ah here is the grubby floor person!

Yes, here I am! As stated in my next post, movie theaters are known for having grubby floors, all around the world. People spill drinks, popcorn etc. It's not a slight on Jamaica ffs.

LittleTeawithmilk1 · 26/01/2024 23:44

I love her earrings and thanks to the poster who posted the link to the Etsy ones. Im going to buy some.

These are the actual earrings apparently.

A stylist mentioned the name on her TikTok account.

They are lovely and look good on her.

I think Meghan’s look on the night was a really good choice.

Large Hammered Disc Earrings

One of our favorites from the collection, this chic, standout pair of disc earrings are crafted from hammered, subtly textured 18-karat gold and set on delicate ear wires. Timeless, sophisticated and ultra-lightweight, wear yours to transition from day...

Exactly. And the style would be Kingston and not Hollywood.

I think that’s always hard to do for someone who lives elsewhere.

But I think Meghan did a great job of being glamorous, respectful, matching the degree of style of people she’d be interacting with and she looked beautiful.

Yes to all of that.

I'd say she clearly tried not to outshine the Marley family, the music associates, or the local dignitaries too, opting for the very plain all black ensemble, but still looked formal and very respectful - and also truly happy to be there, so a big win for her and H.

Thank you for articulating the “dress code” thing much better than I could. You’re absolutely right - it feels like people haven’t met actual Caribbean people outside of the beach and resorts.

Funny story - I took 18 year old me to meet my boyfriend’s mother wearing a micro dress in the suburbs of St George in Grenada. The moment I walked into her house (I’m not of Caribbean descent but very much a Black Brit) and clocked the crosses on the wall, the spotless house with the doilies on the tables and she came out in her suit after coming from work - woo boy! 🤣She was unfailingly polite but I knew that next time (if there ever was going to be a next time) I would
have to “come correct”. Lucky for me there was a next time - and I wore a yellow ankle skimming sundress which she complimented and I never made that mistake again when I visited anyone’s house formally. She died recently but was a formidable woman whom I kept in touch with through the years.

😂😂 they dont play at all! and do not want to see your knees.

everyone sees the caribbean as some sort of hedonistic amoral playground and its just not the reality,

you cannot wear flip flops, small shorts or spaghetti straps in banks or gov't buildings.

How I wish that were true where I live! The unions ensure you can wear whatever you like to work in our state government buildings. Including pajama pants.

this is not just staff, this applies to customers or anyone coming in the bank and is pretty standard across a lot of the caribbean

AliceOlive · 27/01/2024 11:09

I really don’t know anyone that sees the Caribbean that way including on this thread.

But Bob Marley did have more than a bit to do with Jamaica’s image vis-a-vis the weed.

justasking111 · 27/01/2024 12:40

Religion is very important there. Families god fearing and strict.

The dopeheads are at the marinas. Many Brits , Europeans, Americans with yachts used as caravans. They sail in and don't leave. Their boats and brains rot.

skullbabe · 27/01/2024 12:49

It’s fairly apparent from how many people talk about how Meghan was overdressed for a Bob Marley movie where surely the dress code was cool Caribbean attire. It wasn’t as posh as a typical Hollywood event because it was in Jamaica and surely the environment necessitates a more laid back and casual look. Formal attire is not suitable because different cultures have different dress codes.

I think this is a summary of my understanding of why many people, myself included, are trying to disabuse others of the notion that people in the Caribbean do not wear formal attire because they are a different culture or have an expectation of excellence when hosting an event such as a premiere.

I am unsure as to why Bob Marley’s weed use is at all relevant to a conversation about formal dress in the Caribbean.

Really?

" It wasn’t as posh as a typical Hollywood event because it was in Jamaica and surely the environment necessitates a more laid back and casual look. "

and this is what was being said yesterday. Some think Meghan did get the laid back and casual look whereas others didn't and that's fine.

Are you from there? Have you lived there? Are you lumping all of the Caribbean together?

No, yes, no

mrsmingleton · 27/01/2024 13:16

@justasking111 it's your comments about religion that are interesting. I know that it is important in many of the countries but it doesn't mean that everyone lives a strict life. That's a bit of a false picture you are painting.

skullbabe · 27/01/2024 13:44

I have lived in 2 countries in the Caribbean and have visited 5 different ones. I can honestly say that many people’s impression of the Caribbean does not actually match the day to day life of the people who live and work there away from tourist areas. Not many visitors go to the doctors, deposit checks in a bank, pay their utilities, engage a notary public, attend church, go to the theatre etc etc. I have done all of these things in the Caribbean and will reiterate that many will be surprised at just how conservative people are there. That is not to say it is a strict life but it is certainly formal.

Of course - there are cultural elements like carnival which by definition are raucous events but there is always a spectrum - from the aunties doing a gentle wine to young uns doing young people things 👀🙄😂 - just as you will see spectrum of behaviours in any place.

mrsmingleton · 27/01/2024 15:37

You are right @skullbabe in that not many tourists will encounter some of these things. People used to come and visit and ask me why it was raining. Tourists come and expect to leave their bedroom patios open and then wonder why they get robbed. They may see some of the less landscaped and littered areas and fallen down buildings on their way from the airport and that is the same as eg Thailand or many other countries. Conservative? Yes many are but not all. Anyway I digress.

AliceOlive · 28/01/2024 17:32

Way to end a conversation MrsM!

SecretSoul · 28/01/2024 21:53

Setting aside the cultural differences being discussed, I’m surprised to see Meghan’s outfit getting so much love. I didn’t think it was a good look at all, for several reasons.

The fit seemed poor (button area ruching at the back) while the two slightly different shades of black looked like someone trying to awkwardly match. If you can’t get an exact match. I think a contrast colour would have been better. Meghan’s slim figure seemed to get lost in the voluminous bottom half which didn’t seem to belong with the gym/beach style of the cami top.

I have to confess I’m not a big admirer of a lot of Meghan’s formal/evening wear choices in general. Conversely, I think she looks absolutely wonderful in the casual wear she chooses, including some of her summer dresses.

I’m not really sure what it is - so many of her glam outfits seem wrinkled or poorly fitting. Again, she’s got a great figure so I’m not sure why! I wonder if it’s because she doesn’t feel completely free to dress as she wants - even though they’ve “left” the royal family, she probably (?) has some restrictions on not dressing too raunchy etc.

Josette77 · 29/01/2024 03:42

This was my favourite dress of hers yet.
Yes it was too long but I loved the simplicity and elegance and it was extremely flattering. I thought overall she looked fantastic.

Dweetfidilove · 29/01/2024 13:57

As usual, a Meghan and Harry thread is where many idiots come to roost 😂😂.

The Duchess looked fabulous, as she often does. They were invited, they attended and the Jamaican people love them. If the media wants to spin that into something else, well…

I've had a few good laughs at the idiocy of some of the reporting.

As for the stereotypes on this thread 🤣🤣Better to be known for weed than being down a back alley pumping ‘God knows what shit’ into your veins or choking on your own vomit after a night on the razz 🤷🏽‍♀️.

Springcleaninginsummer · 29/01/2024 14:12

Do you think H was sober when he was photoed naked cupping his bollocks in his hand on a pool table? My eyes have never recovered.

AliceOlive · 29/01/2024 14:12

@Dweetfidilove you may have missed that one of the posters you are aiming at lived in the Caribbean and knows it quite well. She indicated so subtly so you can be forgiven for not realizing it if that is the case. But that’s why it all went quiet after her post.

AliceOlive · 29/01/2024 14:13

Or maybe you meant someone else when you called people here idiots. 🤣
