Im not sure why there has to be some sort of “league table” about which woman has put up with worse

I'm not sure either. That sums it up. No woman should be subjected to the unpleasant media stories and pictures Kate and Meghan endured

Serenster · 04/02/2024 09:28

Actually I’ve just remembered poor Sophie had this too. When she’d worked doing PR for Chris Tarrant he’d “jokingly”pulled her top up once, and a colleague had snapped a picture. The colleague then sold the picture to the press who published it right before her wedding to Edward.

Vile behaviour all around.

Roussette · 04/02/2024 09:36

Agree. It's just awful. We don't see this sort of thing with males who have married in to the RF

Serenster · 04/02/2024 09:49

I can only imagine the photos of Mike Tindall in existence - but “What Goes on Tours Stays on Tour”, right lads? 🙄

I quite agree.
So reminding the public about the "waity Katie" slur in a very public interview wouldn't be a good thing to do?
Has Kate ever publicly reminded people about the unkind things said about Meghan?

Mylovelygreendress · 04/02/2024 10:25

Excellent post @LaMarschallin

Only difference is that the Palace made sure Kates pictures weren't published here

No - the newspapers would not have published the photos in the UK because they knew they would be successfully sued for them here - as the papers in France were. It was their risk appetite that would have informed that, not the Palace intervening (the Palace may have sent them a shot across the bows, we don’t know, but I think it’s unlikely they would have needed to - there are loads of photos published internationally that the UK papers won’t publish - and not all about the royals, either).

The Meghan headlines were different. They were 100% vile, but they were also true (exploitative people had uploaded clips of Meghan on Suits to that website) and there was obviously no issue that the original Suits footage had been filmed with Meghan’s consent. The Palace could have complained (and they may have done, we don’t know) about the headlines, but legally could not have done anything about them.

Publishing them on a porn site without her consent was illegal. And should not have been used for voyeuristic purposes by The Sun. They knew exactly what they were insinuating by that headline.

Serenster · 04/02/2024 10:58

Of course they did, Hence why I said it was 100% vile of them. But they only reported what was true - clips featuring Meghan had been uploaded to the website in question. The Palace can tell them are are extremely unhappy with them for the story, but they can’t make them take it down.

Exactly.

jeffgoldblum · 04/02/2024 11:17

There is footage of kate being surrounded and I mean surrounded, while she was completely on her own walking to a car , all the male photographers were literally shouting and screaming " whore and slut" at her in an attempt to get a reaction !
I've never seen anything so abusive .
It was never just "waity Katie " .

I am not understanding why you are telling us and offering best wishes to POW in the third person. Just write to her at KP.

By the way, she is not Princess Kate. She is Princess of Wales. She holds no title of her own, only through William - an archaic English tradition.

Idontpostmuch · 04/02/2024 12:23

@LuluBlakey1 Yes annoying to see her called PK. Catherine, P of W. She’s also Princess William but thankfully doesn’t use it.

Meghan was explaining what she had been subjected to. I don't think she was 'reminding the public'. And no Kate has never said anything, of course she hasn't, like the Queen she cannot express an opinion or give a view on anything.

She could have explained without explicitly referring to the derogatory nick name for the Princess though as several of us have said. Don’t you agree?

Maireas · 04/02/2024 13:01

I agree. Absolutely no need for Meghan to repeat that.

ArcaneWireless · 04/02/2024 13:08

I understand why It was mentioned.

Like others here, it was completely unnecessary to use that particular phrase.

The women were besieged and ‘attacked’ and mis-called enough.

For one person who had experienced it to use another’s insult/nickname to press their point home wasn’t fair.

Totally agree . It was uncalled for .

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar · 04/02/2024 14:01

Catherine also endured most of that face to face, physical harassment and foul misogyny when she was little more than a teenager and not a person who had courted the public eye. And she endured it for years. Meghan was a mid thirties woman who had spent her life courting the public eye, and who had been lucky enough to never endure racism (by her own admission) until her relationship with Harry became public. Honestly, I would have hoped she had been stronger and more realistic about the situation - there isn’t a single woman in the public eye who isn’t on the receiving end of the foulest abuse for whatever reason is available to the abusers. While there was some awful things said about her, most of her press coverage was not only glowing, but many of the articles bigged her up by putting Catherine down, and were doing so when she was again vulnerable, a mother of very young children and latterly pregnant.

Serenster · 04/02/2024 14:01

Meghan was explaining what she had been subjected to

Well, exactly. No need to repeat past press slurs other people were subject to if you are just talking about your own experiences.

Meghan was looking to set up a “league table” though in my opinion, and so minimising others’ experiences was therefore necessary.

Roussette · 04/02/2024 14:09

It isn't a competition. I think we are all in agreement that no woman should be subjected to this, whatever their age, experience, ethnicity... anything.

Serenster · 04/02/2024 14:13

Well, I think that and you think that, but clearly Meghan doesn’t.

themessygarden · 04/02/2024 14:16

From my perspective, I think Meghan displays a lot of low level hostility (jealousy?) towards Catherine, but tries to camouflage it.

Catherine made her cry, but she apologised and Meghan has forgiven her, terrible that Catherine was called Waitey Katie, 'not everything is what it looks like' about them being friendly at Wimbledon , Kates formality on their first meeting in contrast to Meghan being 'a hugger and barefoot' etc etc.

In addition, we also get the soundbites from Meghan's friends trying to undermine Catherine.

If it was someone I worked with, gossiping and putting someone down like that, I know I would be staying well clear of them.

From my perspective you like most people haven't the foggiest what is going on in their relationships and should have learnt not to hold such staunch opinions based on tabloid gossip.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 04/02/2024 14:30

Well that's the thing about perspectives, isn't it? they all depend on where you're standing.

you like most people haven't the foggiest what is going on in their relationships and should have learnt not to hold such staunch opinions based on tabloid gossip

How, just for interest, are you forming your staunch opinions?

Clearly in your opinion.

Not mine.
