I find it odd that the Princess of Wales news has come after the event. If was planned, why wasn't the press release put out a week ago like the Kings upcoming minor surgery?

I have a feeling it was an ectopic pregnancy that came to light just after Xmas and the early non-surgical medication failed resulting in emergency surgery yesterday.

We're being told it was planned but I'm not convinced it's something that has been expected for long and they have only mentioned the King to try and divert the media attention, which hasn't worked like they hoped.

nosleepforme · 17/01/2024 19:14

Wishing princess Catherine a healthy and speedy recovery

Oaktree55 · 17/01/2024 19:15

Yes my hunch is there’s some emotional impact eg failed pregnancy etc hence Charles’s announcement thoughtfully trying to take spotlight off her.

I had an ectopic pregnancy whilst actually pregnant - it wasn’t ideal, but I was in and out of hospital within a day. Even a complication would only have added a few days. It’s keyhole surgery.

Perhaps to keep a tighter rein on the news, so that her kids didn't hear about it at school, or something like that. Also, she is not the head of state, KC is.

RebeccaCloud9 · 17/01/2024 19:17

@Saschka oh god yeah you're right!

She has a scar on her head from a serious operation she had as a child. The reason for the operation has remained private and never been disclosed publicly. She strikes me as a very private person and I think that's the way it will stay IF she is not outed by the press.

It has surprised me how quickly all the details of the late Queen's death has been published (how many books and serialisations has there been already?).

I suspect it might have been a VP shunt which is now causing problems. Would fit the brief serious but not cancer.

Someone commented that Charles’s announcement at the same time is to deflect attention from her. Could well be as v unusual to have these announcements together. Perhaps it is more that a straightforward scheduled operation.

Now that's the sort of FIL who wouldn't get moaned about on MN. I mean having prostate surgery so DIL can have a bit of privacy is very noble of him.

Tummy tuck

But it is not 10-14 day stay in the hospital. At least not when I researched about it because I wanted one for myself.

CurlewKate · 17/01/2024 19:20

@duckpancakes "Why has this thread turned into guess the operation?"

Because it's interesting?

berksandbeyond · 17/01/2024 14:41

It’ll be a hysterectomy. She will have a longer period of recuperation in hospital because 1) it’s a private hospital and 2) she’s the future queen ffs

It doesn't work like that.

Private hospitals make clinical decisions, they don't hold onto patients longer than necessary.

My DP had major surgery in the other top London hospital, was got out of bed on the same day, and was out in 5 days. They wanted to discharge him after 4 days but because of the journey home, he asked for another night.

JustExistingNotLiving · 17/01/2024 19:21

@LaurieStrode Because talking about it before KC surgery would have detracted from all the commiseration sent to him.

Any release from the Palace is carefully thought out and crafted. She won’t have had a lot if choice in what us said and when

Iwasafool · 17/01/2024 19:22

Neurodiversitydoctor · 17/01/2024 19:18

Do you mean her abdominal surgery is something to do with a VP shunt?

thepressoutside · 17/01/2024 19:24

Wow both Kate and Charles. The palace must be in a tizzy

FMLWTF · 17/01/2024 19:24

Not likely to be an ectopic. I had surgery for a ruptured ectopic and was home the next day.

CoasttoCoastlines · 17/01/2024 19:24

They rarely do hysterectomies now unless really necessary.

I always thought she must have a cast iron pelvic floor seeing all the sport she did after 3 kids.

I think it's something else.

@duckpancakes "Why has this thread turned into guess the operation?"

It's not really as no one is going to win a prize if they get it right or anything.

alltootired · 17/01/2024 19:24

@Neurodiversitydoctor that is the first guess that makes sense.

Anisette · 17/01/2024 19:26

Loving the Mail's picture of William "juggling childcare" with supporting Kate. Poor lamb, how will he cope?

Elvanseshortage · 17/01/2024 19:26

@Neurodiversitydoctor but why would she have a VP shunt?

EverleighMay · 17/01/2024 19:26

I'm not sure about the VP Shunt, generally the advice would be to avoid contact sports for life.

yesmen · 17/01/2024 19:26

SlightlygrumpyBettyswaitress · 17/01/2024 14:54

I expect that they are overstating the stay to be on the safe side.
There's a whole load of things it could be. Not one of them anyone's business but her own.

She is a public figure, a future Queen.

It is absolutely our business.

That wonderful and kind family who are loving to every family member, even those who are named in a world wide sexual abuse scandal.

I couldn't agree more. Some people seem to think that the person who had the minimal recovery needs should 'set the standard' for all others, and can't seem to comprehend that there are all kinds of variables. Yes, you may be lucky enough to have had a very easy time with absolutely no complications and very little pain. But minimising major hospital procedures and acting as if its akin to having a filling nowadays and why would anyone need to be in hospital for any length of time etc is really tiresome. I've seen it on so many threads on MN. 'Oh I was back playing tennis 3 days after my quadruple bypass', 'Oh I just popped into hospital in my lunch hour for a bit of brain surgery'.

We're not all the same. Just because you got lucky and had an extremely easy time doesn't mean you deserve a medal.

This

My immensely fit DD (on a British athlete development programme for her sport so really fit) had spinal surgery last year. Was on her feet the day after. However over the course of her week in hospital she developed an allergy to the dressings leading to skin break down and complications. No one would have expected it to drag on the way it did given she was so fit and healthy. No one knows quite what is around the corner with major surgery

EverleighMay · 17/01/2024 19:31

The Press Office have scored an own goal confirming it isn't cancer. Tabloid press will remember that for next time and really get whipped up into a frenzy when The Palace go radio silent.

With QE2 they refused to confirm or deny if she had cancer.
