A colostomy can mean a stay of 10 days. Maybe she has colitis or IBD and had part of her bowel removed

My DM was in for two nights with her stoma

Wow at the week for every 15 minutes of GA!

DH had surgery in August, under GA for 5 hours, overnight in hospital and back at work 12 days post surgery. He should just be going back to work!

Yes, I was sorry when our old GP retired. Under his successor it meant I had a sterilisation on the Thursday and was back at work on the Monday, albeit limping around a bit.

The palace has specifically said it isn't cancer.

Can you point me to where you saw that please? @Betsyhilton

gnarlynarwhal · 17/01/2024 17:19

I stayed in hospital for 1 night after my hysterectomy but mine was done via key hole surgery. Hope she is ok.

Betsyhilton · 17/01/2024 17:01

That makes more sense. But I still wasn't up to much after 5 weeks. And many people aren't.
I just hate it when people (not necessarily you) assume that because they only needed a certain amount of time to recover, anyone who needs longer is malingering.

No, I totally get that. We are all different. I think it made a big difference that I was fairly young, reasonably fit and also have a very high pain threshold.

I also think I was lucky with my surgeon/consultant as I feel his advice really helped my recovery

I am sure that readers in Canada know- we read newspaper articles when on holiday in autumn 2021 about the queens bone cancer- returned home expecting the press to be full of it- no mention at all

I thought the late Queen had bone marrow cancer (not bone cancer)

There was no official announcement, but the 'let it be known' was myeloma, was it not?

Also it seems she died with it, not of it (though it's likely it contributed to her old age decline)

alltootired · 17/01/2024 17:22

@TrickyD the old types of general anaesthetic did used to knock people out and they could take a day or two to be totally with it. So maybe he was about 50 years behind the times?

PyongyangKipperbang · 17/01/2024 17:22

The Palace has already said that she wants her personal medical information to be kept private, in others words...."Noses out, sticky beaks!"

MaggieFS · 17/01/2024 17:23

Cancer-mongers can pipe down too

I was out after a day for a hysterectomy

Really ? I haven’t seen that statement. Can you link please ?

That's a pretty nasty thing to say.

Zanatdy · 17/01/2024 17:24

Those who think of major surgery as a break haven’t spent 2wks in high dependency thinking they are dying, or would rather die as it’s preferable at that point. What a ridiculous comment

Betsyhilton · 17/01/2024 17:25

Tetchypants · 17/01/2024 17:18

It's on the BBC website and at least one other I've read as well.

The Princess of Wales is to stay in hospital for up to two weeks after undergoing abdominal surgery.
Kensington Palace said the procedure was planned and successful but the princess is not expected to resume royal duties for months.
The palace did not disclose further details about her condition but said it is not cancer-related.

mydogisthebest · 17/01/2024 17:25

penjil · 17/01/2024 17:24

NHS though, yes?

I was private and only in 1 night

It was in the Times

EffieGraysDisappointingWeddingNight · 17/01/2024 17:26

I was also wondering what 'brown leg' was. Sounded like the kind of disease a 16th century sailor might have contracted in the Tropics.

LlynTegid · 17/01/2024 17:26

Hope the Princess of Wales makes a full recovery and is allowed to do so in peace.

User3563573 · 17/01/2024 17:26

A c-section is also considered "major" abdominal surgery and patients are shoved out the door after 24hrs. In other countries, c-sections are given 3-5 days of recovery, similar to a hysterectomy.

So recovery time doesn't necessarily correlate to the severity of the procedure. Some minor operations end up with complications that require longer recoveries. Anyone remember that bizarre story with Princess Charlene of Monaco? Apparent a botched dental operation left her rail thin and needing treatment in South Africa away from her kids for over a year. However things all turned out well in the end.

Ropeonasoap · 17/01/2024 17:27

TrickyD · 17/01/2024 17:04

Our GP’s rule of thumb was that you need a week off work for every 15 minutes that you have been anaesthetised. On his calculation POW must have had a long operation to take her ‘time off’ to Easter.

My friend had 14 hour surgery. Lol at this

I'm revolted by some of the vicious, disgusting and hateful comments on this thread.

Then why click on it?

LBFseBrom · 17/01/2024 17:28

Poor thing. I am not going to speculate but I do sympathise with her and hope whatever it is necessitating the operation and recovery period, is solved. This must be so worrying for her husband and family.

FrancisSeaton · 17/01/2024 17:28

@penjil I was treated at a private hospital actually.

alltootired · 17/01/2024 17:28

@User3563573 I thought Princess Charlene was effectively held hostage?
