A turkey, absolute balls of stuffing or a right Christmas cracker? We'll let you decide. Please keep the discussion interesting, civilised and relevant - the Holiday Armadillo is lurking!

A film about Bob Marley has limited appeal? His music is still very popular and I know lots of people who went to the stage show in London. I don't even like his music but I intend to see the film as he was a very interesting person. I think it's very condescending to think the film needed H & M to publicise it.

Maybe you need to pass your views on to Paramount then?

I will say that this thread has helped me understand the confusion (on here and a couple other sites) at H&Ms happiness in Jamaica.

People are focused on royal boxes and head tables as if that’s what matters.

Yup and awards and titles and accolades.

Femitattler · 26/01/2024 10:54

But @Gardeningtime how do you know H&M were hired for very little cost.i have to laugh 😅

Well they didn’t pay them a hundred million now did they?

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar · 26/01/2024 11:21

@Gardeningtime I get it on the low budget/minimal marketing front, and clearly Paramount weren’t intending to go beyond basic promotion. All the more pity that they didn’t take a chance on creating a break out Jamaican star, which wouldn’t have been a risk for them compared to the money put into the project.

I don’t care about H&M being at a premiere, it’s part of his new lifestyle and the one she’s always wanted. All the political stuff around it is far more interesting.

Laughing, however, at the description of an apparently bespoke, several thousand dollar, full skirted, taffeta skirt by Carolina Herrera, that is so voluminous and long that the wearer needs to hold it in front of her in order to walk and people are treading on it as a “flared skirt”. Good marketing, CH, hope you are winning!

I haven’t been to the pictures in about 30 years so this would have passed me by.

I should imagine that a huge advertising/publicity campaign would indeed cost a fortune.

What is clearly being said is that if they arranged for H&M to attend, hired or not, it would provide a lot of publicity for little outlay in comparison.

It is grand to have a balanced conversation.

Having a snidey poke is not that.

That’s the thing, I think we are probably trying to build politics in there, that don’t exist, then reality is he is estranged from his family, they are not working royals, and were not there to represent the royal family.

The Jamaican government will have known that full well in advance, and approved thr attendance, the president would know who he was greeting and why they were there, and that would include knowing they were being paid to attend by paramount, as it would achieve publicity for the movie, for very little cost in comparison to what a marketing campaign would cost. As such, they ok;d it and the president was not blind sided. No embarrassing surprise.

i also don’t think the royal family give a shit, they weren’t representing them, and simply it seems made pleasant small talk, did their job, which was basically front up and post for pics, and leave. They were even sat in Siberia.

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar · 26/01/2024 11:32

Fair enough@ArcaneWireless . I do go to the cinema quite a bit, so it was already on my radar for ages. I’ve been missing Lady L.

So why all this gashing of teeth from the UK press then.

calling them names, insensitive, supporting anti-monarchists etc

baffling.

I can’t help but feel a few of them knew exactly what it would look like and felt very pleased with themselves and the photo opportunities.

Shame folk are mainly yapping about a voluminous skirt.

Femitattler · 26/01/2024 11:46

Their option book Meet Me At The Lake is apparently in pre-production, would be neat if it came out this year.

I’ve just done a news search and of all the articles I’ve seen none of them do that, but if they are, then as harry is at war with the British press ,and appears to be taking legal action when he’s called out for fibbing, then I can see why they may take a dim view of it.

the fact articles may be published doesn’t make it true, you need to think critically. Factually the Jamaican president will have known they were coming. Factually he will habe known why. He will be briefed on who he is meeting and why, and factually they are not working royals and were there as private citizens, they weren’t representing the royal family. The Jamaican president will have been fully aware of this.

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar · 26/01/2024 11:53

@Gardeningtime There is undoubtedly politics in there. I had a look to see what Lady C had to say about it, her being a native Jamaican, and a huge supporter of Andrew Holness and someone unfazed by the idea that Jamaica will vote to rid themselves of Charles as head of state (which is something I agree with). She says that it would have been viewed as a royal visit from Harry, who is thought of with fondness in Jamaica. So that is an issue, because if they are there for private, commercial gain, but their presence is perceived as royalty (which they still are according to the RF website and hold themselves out to be) and may be affecting the politics of the country in either direction, then that is an issue.

The other issue is personal politics and the way the couple and their supporters hold themselves out whilst pointing fingers at, in particular, W&C. Eg, we can surely no longer take anything they say about the environment vis a vis air based journeys seriously. The combination of unnecessary private jet journeys for fripperies like this minor premiere, combined with accepting an award from people who pollute the skies for pleasure rather than necessity, surely puts paid to the credentials they claim. By all means, as private citizens, what they do is their affair. What they do as campaigners of influence is open to scrutiny. What they do under the guise of their royal titles is political.

Best selling author, extremely well connected, born and bred Jamaican, who did a support ad for the current PM of Jamaica at his request. Do you think she is less credible than you?

JSMill · 26/01/2024 12:10

I'm not buying that they were paid to attend the premiere. They would have had much better seats if they were considered important enough to generate publicity for the film. More importantly, surely they'd have posed for photos with the stars of the movie. The pictures with the head of paramount looked like they'd photobombed it and neither the man nor his wife made eye contact.

As for M's outfit, you can debate whether or not it was OTT for the occasion, I just think that skirt looks fricking hot and sweaty.

ArcaneWireless · 26/01/2024 12:10

You could posit the notion that she (Lady C) is certainly more credible than some.

whattheactualfrog · 26/01/2024 12:11

I thought there was a bit of a Hertz moment when they paraded past the empty popcorn stand!

But the event wasn’t televised, that’s not the money shots. The money shot was the images of them before, attending, shaking hands in the way in, doing the meets and greets. The actual screening was irrelevant and where they sat, it wasn’t the Oscar’s.

Gardeningtime · 26/01/2024 12:17

Also the point of them being sat in Siberia, and getting paid if they were proper guests they’d have been front and centre at rhe screening, they weren’t, they were staff, there to do a job, and once they were in behind closed doors, irrelevant, simply someone sneaked a photo.
