Extensive Phone Hacking by MGN

So... Harry has won his case.

As lawyers are saying now... this is massive. 15 out of 33 accusations of hacking by Harry were upheld as a result of phone hacking and other illegal practices.
Hacking and blagging were even taking place during the Leveson enquiry.

He has won damages of £140,000 plus. And before this thread descends into Harry hate, please think of all the other claimants who have also had their claims upheld and damages awarded to them. They went through hell, medical records hacked and reported on, trackers on cars, phones hacked...

It's not about the money, it's about 'accountability of power'.

Agreed @Roussette
You'd have to wonder what Milly Dowler's parents' thoughts are tonight.

StSwithinsDay · 16/12/2023 00:01

@EmmaEmerald
Yeah - it's a real laugh! Glad it provides you with some amusement. Not.

Agreed @Roussette

They're probably feeling utter despair, that clip from 2003 with Piers Morgan and Charlotte Church....

twenty fucking years ago, public still bay for more.

Oh it's a hollow, bitter twisted laugh

they don't really think anyone relies on journos for truth.

in case you didn't see my earlier post, I did a lot of campaigning for Leveson but when no one cared about a missing child's phone being hacked, I gave up.

Owl55 · 16/12/2023 00:08

Good for Harry , the detestable Piers Morgan has claimed of course that he knew nothing about it when he was editor!! Piers then spewed his hatred of Harry and Meghan as per usual ! This is the man who was editor when child murder victim Millie Dowling had her phone hacked when dead , I don’t believe anything he says 🤮

EmmaEmerald · 16/12/2023 00:08

Samcro · 15/12/2023 22:14

I might be wrong here, but all this has made me wonder if people have been played by the media.
now I’m not going to pretend H&M are squeaky clean, but the level of hate they receive is off the charts, and it all lead’s back to the media, or the press.
i remember when it was Diana =good
Sarah = bad
there has been a hate campaign against Meghan for ages, and who fuels that?
oh yes the press and media, people like piers Morgan

confused

Everyone know the press are mostly scum, surely?

and you remember Diana and Fergie so you aren't too young to know?

ALittleTeawithmilk · 16/12/2023 02:39

Wow. Brilliant news. Not just for Harry but for the others. Also good news for the British people too I think.

I did wish it had been Murdoch’s news group up first - because his media empire infects three countries, mine included. But this is such a good start.

andIsaid · 16/12/2023 03:16

Fulshaw · 15/12/2023 16:56

Morgan keeps repeating ‘I’ve never hacked a phone’ and ‘I’ve never told anyone to hack a phone’. That’s probably true.

But it’s not what we’re alleging mate. We’re asking if you knew it went on.

Exactly Fulshaw.

He is careful.

Maireas · 15/12/2023 17:17

I'm glad of this result. What a vile practice.
Harry is clearly a very troubled person, but phone hacking could make anyone distrustful, even if they have good mental health. He thought his own family was leaking and briefing against him. I'm hoping he can put this behind him and move on. I hope others similarly get closure.

Edited

Harry is clearly a very troubled person

This is interesting - I don't see him that way at all.

I see him as stategic.

This takes planning, patience, and a cool head.

It takes someone with long term vision abd someone with intelligence.

This is not the work of a troubled person.

cometdancer · 15/12/2023 20:46

I always thought H&M were driven out of this country. I believe the vendetta is real. I’m most alarmed the RF could have sat back and let this play out.

This is VERY important.

The fact that his family, our head of state, sat back and did nothing is very alarming.

Well said.

Are you only seeing this now Samcro?

The media are in a years long, sustained bullying campaign against him.* *
In plain sight.

In my opinion it got extreme once they knew King Charles wanted him to drop a named palace PR from a suit.

Press knew he was isolated at that point with no high leval support.

They racheted up massively then.

andIsaid · 16/12/2023 04:14

rosyglowcondition · 15/12/2023 22:38

@Samcro But Harry said on Netflix that the royal F were upset and angry that Meghan went somewhere and outshone all the other royals and all the papers were praising her and she overshadowed the rest of the RF. she was on the front page and the queen outing was overshadowed. This was what he himself said, not a newspaper article. I do think it's disingenuous to say it's all media, although it certainly plays a big part. Lots of people stopped buying newspapers years ago like me. Also have no time for magazines. I only see the odd article that pops into my feed. Even Newsweek in America has a critical piece out on them, so something other than simply print media and social media must be at play here. Even their fiercest supporters must admit they do themselves no favours otherwise why would Southpark poke fun at them? The couple need to step back, rethink their strategy and concentrate on their charity and creative work. Omid scobies book has caused them harm by association and I think this really is their opportunity to stop whining and play to their strengths and stop displaying their weaknesses.

This may be true for you but the Daily Mail has just under 200 million visitors a month. Think about that for a minute.

Even Newsweek in America has a critical piece out on them, so something other than simply print media and social media must be at play here.
I see how you are thinking here - a kind of no smoke without fire? Fair - until you see that the ownership of media is not that diverse. And most of them get their information from the same dominant wire services - Reuters, AP and AFP. Almost every news outlet the world over is fed information from them. Astonishing when you think about it! We live in a heavily propagansit era but are not aware of it.

But Harry said on Netflix that the royal F were upset and angry that Meghan went somewhere and outshone all the other royals and all the papers were praising her and she overshadowed the rest of the RF. she was on the front page and the queen outing was overshadowed. I remember him saying that in the Netflix show. He was not wrong either. She is very at ease in a public role and people responded to her. I am sure that the famous "men in grey suits" did not like or want that.

The nature of the institution is such that focus needs to be on the amazingness of the next in line.

He has done great work with this case. Really impressive.

Lampzade · 16/12/2023 06:08

Harry was given the name ‘ Mahale’by the people of Lesotho. The name means ‘Warrior’. How befitting,

I agree with you. Even the hate on here is disturbing at times. I find it most odd there are not multiple posts in the verdict. If this has done against Harry, the press would have been all over it. The Daily Mail’s silence if deafening. So are many posters on here.

I just had to go and look at their front page. Leading is an opinion piece that attacks the Sussexs.

It's not like Fail readers in the UK won't read or listen to other media outlets.

Samcro · 16/12/2023 07:51

@rosyglowcondition so you think because south park (never watched it) took the piss out of them, that is some kind of proof of something, thats odd.

ThisisgroundcontroltoMajorTom · 15/12/2023 17:12

To go off piste a bit, and make a political point, I think this case is representative of how far we allow greedy commercial imperatives to crowd out basic democratic values in the uk including human rights.

There’s another story in the press today about how the lack of firm regulation in the tech industry has led to two murders of teen boys who encountered malevolent strangers while they were innocently gaming.

Another example is the pollution of our shores and rivers.

The right wing press characterised the EU as “red tape central” and led the charge for Brexit because it was in their interests to do so, but I think this case and others highlights how much how we need a strong regulatory framework. And a strong judiciary to uphold it (and yes the judiciary has been under-resourced too) as we are all much more exposed to sharp practice post Brexit now we have lost the protection of EU regs.

We need firm legislation not to hamper trade but to ensure a balance of power and that the rights of “the ordinary person” are heard and protected. (Harry has gone well here representing people who do not have his resources.)

Anyway, I hope everyone will bear this in mind when it comes to the next election. And let’s hope Starmer dares to speak up a bit more against the right wing press once he’s been elected!

His father is scared of the media, and what they know, and what they would do to him or Camilla. Why else would he have a former Daily Mail Editor as his most senior aide?

I looked up who owns MGN, Mirror Group Newspapers. Its a company called Reach PLC. New Media Investment group owns Reach Plc. New Media Investment Group is a New York City-based private equity firm that is the parent company of Gannett Co., Inc., the largest newspaper publisher in the United States- overseeing the publication of 260 newspapers in the US. Forrest Investment Group manages New Media Investment. Forrest is owned by Softbank, a Japanese investment holding company. The largest shareholder of Softbank, is Masayoshi Son.

I just thought it was interesting to find out who really owns the Mirror group!

cathyandclaire · 16/12/2023 08:46

The Independent article is very hard hitting, thanks for sharing. The Daily Mail is shameless in their reporting ( well, more like non-reporting) of this.

Today, their first page has a very negative article about Harry and Meghan quoting James Haskell and a snide article about their Christmas card ( implication H&M flashy and trashy, K&C and W&K classy.)

Nothing on this big news story. I assume it's buried somewhere while they ramp up the negativity

Cakester · 16/12/2023 09:01

From the BBC today:

*There is little doubt the High Court ruling that Prince Harry was a victim of phone hacking by Mirror Group Newspapers on multiple occasions has huge implications.
The court has ruled that Prince Harry was hacked, as were his friends and associates. The case established that Mirror titles also used other unlawful methods to get information about him.
It raises questions. Firstly, will any criminal proceedings follow from it? *

That last question is what I am most interested in! Will criminal proceedings follow?
