Finding Freedom was free on Kindle about a year ago.

It was indeed.

I downloaded it and still haven't read it. Will try harder with BellEndgame.

No. 1 in the queue for the Scobie-fest at the local library.

Had to wait six months for the execrable 'Spare' so feeling like a winner esp. as I'm spanking the recent 99p Kindle deal😎

No 1 in a queue of 1..,😄

😂

I do wonder if they look back and regret it, think they made a mistake, you know In the wee small hours.

they had so much, so very much, harry was being paid 5 million a year, they were getting frogmore, Megan could have continued to work, they could have done charity , still mingled with the big stars. Had them Lining up to meet them at events and premieres. Global coverage. They were incredibly popular.

I can’t see how they don’t look back, and wonder how the hell they got it so wrong. How they ended up in such a mess, derided both sides of the pond, completely estranged from their families and friends. Other than doria. Isolated to an extent.

im sure they don’t think its their fault, that it is the palaces; that they should have allowed the half in half out, to monetise Sussex royal brand.

but in thr wee small hours, I wonder if they reflect on what an awful mess they have made.

I agree with a lot of your post, but where did you hear that "harry was being paid 5 million a year"?

My understanding is that working royals get an allowance of maybe a few hundred thousand a year, plus of course free or subsidised accommodation and lots of other perks. But 5 million a year? No way!

rosyglowcondition · 19/12/2023 22:05

I think it was simply 2 egos the size of the titanic... and we all know how that ended. Add omid scobie to that as we wonder how he will fund his new life in Los Angeles. H&M really don't want anything to do with him as he has damaged their brand so much, but they need to keep him close as he knows where the bodies are buried 😂

ArcaneWireless · 19/12/2023 22:10

The wee small hours.

I think many people, in a period of time when you have way too much time to think and way too much to think about, will wonder away the time with ‘what ifs’ and ‘if onlys’ and wishing things could have been different.

I hope the pair of them are not kept wakened and sleep soundly through the wee small hours because I think the ‘what ifs’ and ‘if onlys’ must be a constant noise.

It is, what they call up here, a fucking sotter. And even stingier because it is all of their own making.

I would have sympathy but they have flung out so many wee parcels of hate and spite that it is hard to sympathise.

And sadly they are finding out that it is coming back to them - and more.

(Sotter - A mess, a muddle, a confused mass, chaos)

StartupRepair · 19/12/2023 22:15

I don't see any evidence that they reflect on anything. As time passes, the vagueness, exaggerations and untruths in the Oprah interview at a time when Philip was dying, is more clearly spiteful and continues to undermine the 'humanitarian' brand.

Cosywintertime · 19/12/2023 22:16

agree with a lot of your post, but where did you hear that "harry was being paid 5 million a year"

it is in the duchy of Cornwall accounts, he was paid an allowance of 5 million pounds a year from his fathers duchy of Cornwall. He wasn’t paid for royal duties, simply Charles gave him a 5 million a year allowance from the duchy, it’s quite well publicised.

Cosywintertime · 19/12/2023 22:20

And yes, I suspect think poor me, that the palace is to blame for their woes.

but I wonder if they realise deep down if they’d not done what they’ve done, they’d not be in this mess. Or if they have regrets.

I just can’t get past how much privilege fhey had and how much they squandered. I get they are still hugely privileged. Financially. Two children. But they squandered everything else.

Maireas · 19/12/2023 22:22

I was going to say the same, @Cosywintertime . Duchy records show that Charles was subsiding them well into their sojourn in Montecito.

Maireas · 19/12/2023 22:25

The tricky thing is, now they can't blame "the men in grey suits" or the Palace machinery, or Charles, William or Kate for any disappointment in their present lives. It's all down to them now.
They've got their "freedom", but not quite as they envisioned, I'll wager.

Yes, they left In Jan 2020 and in the April to June of 2020 he gave them an extra 4.5 million pounds to suport their transition. It was detailed in the royal expenditure accounts.

But this wasn't an annual 'payment' was it? Just a one off to help them to find 'financial independence'?

Maireas · 19/12/2023 22:35

Yes, so it was somewhat peevish of Harry to declare "he cut me off" to Oprah. As if it were the most unreasonable action of Charles. Turns out he'd continued to be generous. I suspect they thought that the Bank of Pa would continue wherever they were and whatever they did.
I sometimes wonder what happened to the bespoke Givenchy and Dior couture wardrobe of Meghan's that Charles paid for.

Lunde · 19/12/2023 22:36

The accounts for the financial year 2018-9 (the first year of Harry and Meghan's marriage) showed that the Duchy of Cornwall spent around £5.5 million paying for expenses of the Sussexes and Cambridges.

Yes Meghan went wild in her first year spending almost £410,000 in clothing whereas Kate spent £68,000 in the same year. The figure does not include Meghan's wedding clothing which is estimated to have cost around £380,000 - so almost £800,000 in total.

I often wonder what happened to that Dior dress she wore in Morocco that was estimated to have cost £90,000.

cauliflowerwaterfall · 19/12/2023 22:55

Some of the Dior stuff they’ve both worn has been awful - really badly fitted and unflattering. I really didn’t like that 90k Morocco dress, it made her look all knobbly. If Charles tried to stop them spending any more money on that rubbish, good for him, it was a mercy.

Somebody who has £20m but thinks they were entitled to £200m doesn’t spend their time grateful for the £20m. They spend their time eaten up with resentment and bitterness about the lost £180m. They’ll use phrases like “it’s not about the money, it’s the principle”; and “of COURSE we appreciate our privileges, this isn’t about that”.

I say this because I know someone in this very position. Their entire life is consumed with this. It’s exhausting being around them. They act like they’re fighting a moral crusade, as though the size of the numbers involved elevates the situation into a tragedy that requires a hero to fix, and a villain to quash. They totally, completely, miss the point. They’re pitiful and fundamentally lonely.

Big money very often ruins people who aren’t used to it.

While I do think the amount Meghan is estimated to have spent is very extravagant - particularly the few very expensive dresses mentioned - it’s not fair to compare the spending in her first year to Kate’s spending that year as Kate is now in the position of ‘topping up’ an already extensive wardrobe after ten years on the job so even if she gets a new frock she usually already has the shoes, bag, accessories to go with it.

And the figure quoted given to the Cambridges and Sussexes from the Duchy was given to help them run their households, their office and staffing and their on the job expenses.

So even if it was split evenly and they each got just under $3M that’s not just personal spending money.

Still an amazing deal anyway you look at it from my perspective.

Kate spent £55,000 in her first year of marriage into the Royal Family

RecoIIectionsMayVary · 19/12/2023 23:41

I forget (it is my age) but I knew about the £410,000 on clothes but to read it again and be reminded does cause it to clog one's throat somehow.

I just keep thinking about the response that they would get if they posted on AIBU that my daddy won't pay for my lifestyle.

ThePoshUns · 20/12/2023 00:30

I just had to google the Morocco Dior dress.
She looked nice in it but how can any dress be worth that much? The mind boggles.

Mummyoflittledragon · 20/12/2023 04:23

I also googled the dress and cannot believe the cost for what is just a glorified kaftan. Maybe the idea being it could also be worn when not pregnant? It wasn’t particularly flattering imo as I don’t think a 90k dress should outline someone’s entire figure when walking.

Sisterpita · 20/12/2023 07:19

WRT the cost of clothing, haute couture costs £££ so £90k is not outrageous for one item. Most clothes Kate & Meghan wear/wore on Royal Duties are likely to be ready to wear which have then been fitted to make them look really good.
