Meghan Markle's childhood and looks

Following on from the threads about the Princess of Wales, which have provided ample opportunity for discussion and comment, it seems only right to open up a similar discussion about Meghan Markle.

Let's start with her childhood. Do people think it was the way Thomas Markle raised her as a white single dad that led to the development of her personality?

And what about her looks? How does she manage to keep her legs so lovely and slim?

Meghan doesn't drink

You what now? The woman who named her blog after her favourite red wine and has been pictured many times pre and post marriage drinking…?

@Serenster exactly she loves a glass of red, in the early days herself & Harry had a shared love of cocktails in the Soho club, it's well documented.

What a nasty post. Why do you need to do that. What if I say oh yes MM was so successful about sexist ads but she wasn't fighting sexism in her skimpy dress in Deal or No Deal was she? She doesn't drink or smoke, shame she married a druggie.

We can all throw stones if we want to but what does that achieve. They are both attractive women, both seem like good mothers, hopefully they are both happily married. Why do you want to pull one apart? Why does anyone want to do that about either of them? Is it jealousy, insecurity or what.

Samcro · 11/12/2023 21:03

Ooh now we are discussing her weight.
yet no one is allowed to say Kate is too thin.
weird double standards

I don’t agree with either thread, but don’t pretend that there are different rules when there is a thread about Meghan.
this is a nasty goadythread. The op has made no secret of the fact

skullbabe · 11/12/2023 22:14

Her heritage no but part of her looks which is a feature of her ethnicity?

Do you understand systems of power in the world? It takes a strong woman of colour to stand against the relentless tide of white womaness as the beauty ideal across the western world - you see it in the zero sum way Kate is described as an ideal on the very threads this one was created to counteract (and this is not me saying that Kate is not an attractive well groomed woman). People of colour have it drummed into them that their hair is too curly, their noses to broad, their bums too big, their lips too large, their eyes too big - it’s even worse in entertainment when people like Meghan will have it dawn on them the benefit of being ambiguous. People like Rashida Jones, Maya Rudolph, Wentworth Miller (And maybe Vin Diesel) are all examples of biracial people who many people who say are ambiguous but do not deny their heritage but also remove many traces which would confirm their heritage as opposed to maintaining their ambiguity (straightened hair or shaved heads, rhinoplasty, tweaks). So Meghan may have had a rhinoplasty- it’s subtle and does not give her a caucasian nose - it allows her to be ambiguous which sadly gives her advantages. You’ll have many people of colour who are so far removed from the ”ideal” of thinness, straight hair and small features that they realise that it’s an impossible task to try and achieve. People
like Meghan who don’t have do as much to achieve that “ideal” cannot be castigated for making choices to give her advantages and an easier time than who would need significantly more work.

rosyglowcondition · 11/12/2023 22:30

I don't think anyone has said Meghan isn't beautiful. She is and any work done has been very subtle. Most women (of any colour) would opt to fix something if they could afford to or it was appropriate for their work. Plastic surgery is not a negative unless it goes to extremes.

What room have you been standing in

Gingerboy22 · 11/12/2023 23:30

@skullbabe I really don't understand why Meghan of all people would do this when she is obviously and rightly proud of her heritage. It was obviously when she was younger and wanted to ascend the fame ladder, get the jobs , follow the money etc. I know very well about the things that you said about hair , nose, bums , back etc ( there is nothing new to me in what you say) - I lived in those communities for over 20 years observing what it is like. The desire for their babies to be light skinned, the application of lightening lotions on babies and children, the hair rigmarole to achieve straight hair, the names used by people themselves describing others as bright or red or light, the politicians with the light skinned wives etc. ( Yeah I know that observing is not the same as living it !) Meghan like Beyonce and J Lo have had nose jobs which I assume they see as more attractive than their previous broad noses or were advised to have and which are important to them in their careers. Yes they have been called out in the press for trying to appear white and on the other hand you have people like Jessy Nelson and Ariana Grande who have been slated for the opposite.

As for your last statement I think that is a load of nonsense - because Meghan "doesn't have as much to do to achieve that "ideal" she cannot be castigated for making that choice." Huh? Shouldn't she be saying yes this is me and I am proud of myself.

I’m not sure that calling out nasty remarks about one woman by making similarly nasty remarks about another is making the point you think it’s making.

Because she knows how the world works. She was subjected to racial abuse from the British media and death threats from far right groups when She lived in the UK. Just look at the threads on this forum that are started just to slag her off. Even if you try and start a positive thread about her.

skullbabe · 12/12/2023 04:21

Unfortunately we live in the real world. In the real world people make choices and decisions based on society pressures and expectations. To change this - western society would need to stop promoting the “ideal” of small features, blonde straight hair, blue eyes and thinness. Like I said it takes a strong person to resist especially in entertainment -and very few in the business are able to withstand the pressure. It’s particularly odd to pick on Meghan for this - having plastic surgery does not equal not being proud of your heritage.

pilates · 12/12/2023 06:45

@Samcro there are some appalling comments on Kate’s thread too. No double standards. It must be in the spirit of MN after all.

my mistake, I have pretty much stayed away . might have posted, can't remember . woman are more than their looks. its not right to say nasty stuff about either of them. one thing to say you don't like an outfit, but the too thin/not black enough, cross a line.

@skullbabe well said.

MrsLeonFarrell · 12/12/2023 08:11

I tried to make positive comments on both threads but I now regret posting at all because it's obvious that the nasty comments get more traction.

Can you show where anyone said Meghan was not "black enough"? I certainly haven't read that here.

It's not odd at all to talk about Meghan in this topic - this thread is about Meghan's Looks ( as per thread title) who is herself involved in various women and girls' charities. You might think that someone in this position would not succumb to the pressures you refer to.

Your comments are really offensive, and absolute double standards. Kate has had surgery too, including on her nose. Why don't white women get chastised for erasing their ethnicity?

If this board is going to go this way, we seem to be inundated with nasty unpleasant threads about the women who married in just after some threads criticising William and Charles, then you're just going to get lots more criticism of Kate too. Do you actually want that?

I do not know if Kate has ever had nose surgery. I do know that there have been a couple of women in the USA who tried to "pretend to be black" with skin colouration and hairstyles and even clothes and were called out. I mentioned Ariana Grande and Jessy Nelson before and I believe KK has also been criticised for the same. I therefore do not see that my comments are offensive or double standards. If you feel so then do report.
I'm not sure sure what your last paragraph means - it actually sounds like a threat. I didn't start either of the Kate or Meghan threads.

thats a load of nonsense. Kates thread was started by a new poster, as this was, and was asking how to be more like her. Kate gets mostly positive comments on this board. Meanwhile theres been thread after thread supposedly about a book that is full of hate towards Meghan. The nastiest posts on Kate are not from regulars here at all, so thats just not true. The idea that its 'open season' on Kate is laughable, its Meghan that gets the hate and vitriol, not perfect Kate.
