I'm not sure what is the correct etiquette for carrying on a thread, but here we are. Thanks to @BoxedandRibboned for the original thread.

Scobie's released a statement:

In a new statement today, the author insisted he had only written and edited the English version of the book, so is unable to comment on the Dutch manuscript. He said: "Having only written and edited the English version of Endgame, I can only comment on that manuscript — which does not name the two individuals who took part in the conversation. I’m happy to hear that the error in the translation of the Dutch edition is being fixed.

He's being erroneous. No, the final manuscript of the English version of Endgame doesn't contain the names - what's the betting an earlier draft did and that was the version was sent to the Dutch publisher? It's pretty disgusting he's trying to pass the buck onto the translator.

AutumnCrow · 29/11/2023 16:07

Ah, an 'edition error' now, is it? Riiight.

JSMill · 29/11/2023 16:09

@Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar that's an interesting story about the t shirts!

PopNotPolitics · 29/11/2023 16:10

You'd think Harry would be more wary of tabloid type journalists given how they treated his mother?

ArcaneWireless · 29/11/2023 15:12

Thanks for the link @Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar

How interesting that they picked up on him saying he couldn’t legally say things ‘in the UK…’

He is selecting his words very carefully. On Good Morning America he said he never "sat down" with Meghan and had a private discussion.

Yes and not approving of someone who brings up a hacked phone conversation. But again - I think this particular dog has gotten off the leash. And I don't think Harry was ever the one holding it, anyway.

YourNameGoesHere · 29/11/2023 16:22

His statement makes no sense. So he's basically saying every other country wrote their own version of his book and therefore none of them except the English version are his responsibility?

He's acting like they are different entities, when surely it's the same book just translated into multiple languages?

Please someone make it make sense??

The extract with the 2nd name is not remotely a mistranslation.

As others have said, it appears the Dutch publishers incorrectly got an original version of the book.

p

In which case I wonder what else failed to make the published version here?

My view is that they are aiming primarily at the American audience and America's acceptance of PH and MM as heroic royals in exile, cementing their reputation and money making opportunities there (with OS, who has also moved there, as their court jester in residence).

The First Amendment (which, ironically PH thinks is bonkers and is trying to destroy) would have allowed OS to publish the names without the risk of a libel suit, but he knows this would look bad from a PR point of view - and in any event, the concept of where something is "published" is a bit nebulous, thanks to the internet and social media. The Dutch "mistake" was the perfect vehicle to get it out there. The US left leaning media will give him a sympathetic ride, I am sure. I'll be interested to see if he's on Gayle King's new show that I believe starts today.

(As an amusing aside, the owner of the Kitson Store in LA - where all the celebs shop, and who have H&M in their holiday hypocrites window this year - says that when he used to sell Team W&K and Team H&M shirts, the W&K ones outsold the H&M ones 20 to 1. So maybe H&M&O have a bit of work to do yet!)

Interesting what you say about the team shirts. We were with lots of Americans/Canadians this year and all of them seemed to follow the royal family much more than we do. And all of them thought Harry and Meghan had behaved appallingly.

One elderly couple on hearing we were British wanted to know how much we and our friends talked about H&M when we were socialising. They were quite perplexed when we said we don't talk about them at all. The very sweet lady said she follows the Court Circular and has hundreds of books about them. Our turn to be perplexed!

I think this is possibly what the Dutch journalist was trying to articulate but didn't quite manage on GMB. That the book is a "production". There is just no way for this to have happened unless there were multiple versions, one including the offending passages. It's 5 lines at least including names. That's not something a translator would just decide to add in there.

Possible theory: Omid didn't write it in its raw form. All he's done is tinker with the English language version and put his name to it.

If Omid didn’t write the book then who did?

It's the extreme cheeky fuckery that comes with extreme narcissism.

I think wrangling an invitation was a desperate attempt to placate the reactions when this crap was published. The dim pair were probably hoping that they could turn around and say ‘Look, everything is hunky dory now, we’re off to Sandringham being welcomed like the Prodigal son’. Instead of which the shit has hit the fan and they’re probably scrabbling around trying to come up with something, again.
Personally I hope that the royal family completely cut them off.

If Omid didn’t write the book then who did?

Exactly. I'm glad it's not me being dense. I'm genuinely so confused as to why he's basically implying the book in any other language but English had nothing to do with him.

It's almost like he's preparing for other claims from other versions of the book that were not in the English version coming out...

From the extracts I've see it can't have been as it would have been more coherent. 😅

Didn't visit her at Balmoral whilst alive but couldn't wait to get up there once she died.

There’s a very funny passage in Endgame about Meghan and Harry saying that they hadn’t taken advantage of the standing invitation to the Royal family to spend time at Balmoral over summer in 2019 because at 4 months old, Archie was too young for the hunting, shootings and fishing events that holidays in Balmoral involved (🤣). So they flew to Eltons John’s South of France villa instead.

Just shows they’re only interested if there’s something in it for them. The thought of going simply to visit an elderly grandmother obviously didn’t cross their mind!

Vespanest · 29/11/2023 16:57

The Dutch version had to be the English version that was then translated. He obviously hit a bit of a brick wall with the translation error, a publishing house is going to be reluctant to take responsibility for that, but just as the translation theory was unsupported so is this.

How is dragging Catherine through the press any better than what happened to his own mother.

For some who has been so vocal about the negative effects of the press on both his mother’s and his wife’s MH - why then would he think that was an ok thing to do to the next PofW.

That parallels will be drawn between the previous and current PoWs treatment by the press - well I can’t imagine H&M being be et happy about that - after all, didn’t Harry claim that it was Meghan who was so like his mother?

In a new statement today, the author insisted he had only written and edited the English version of the book, so is unable to comment on the Dutch manuscript.

It's nonsensical. If he said he'd only written the book, but he had no input into the translated versions, that would make sense. Of course the original book would be written by him in English and edited in English; then it would be sent out to the other jurisdictions for an exact translation, with no further additions or editing. But he seems to be implying that there are multiple versions, that have been written and edited in different languages, and all he worked on was the English one. Which rather implies that there is a core piece of work that has been worked on by multiple writers in multiple jurisdictions. Making it a collective "production" rather than a book written by one man. Maybe. Maybe he is just a shit writer who can't get a clear message across.

Is it possible he wrote the English version in a roundabout way (suggesting who said what) and the foreign version in a different language may have been structured better if they just said X and Y instead? Could this even be the case, we need someone who speaks Dutch for this 😄 BUT I would say this would be very far fetched and not sure how it would've been approved for print in the Netherlands...in theory this would have to happen and then a wrong script sent for publishing? The chances of this though...are less than one in a billion 😏

Vespanest · 29/11/2023 17:22

Sky news guest said that the Dutch never received the memo to cut the parts, the intention was to name names until the lawyers got involved.

@Rinoachicken Hopefully the kids won’t want to join the inner circle and decide to be like Zara and Peter - ditch the titles and live relatively anonymous and happy lives the way that we hoped that their parents would when they left as senior royals.

Unlikely. Think of the kudos of being a prince and a princess!

So, I’m wondering whether OS has stolen H&M’s trump card (the names of the royal racists) which was to form the core of their next book / be a long-term bargaining chip..

OR

whether they were happy for him to use the info (though the lawyers seem to have come in later to kybosh that)
