I'm not sure what is the correct etiquette for carrying on a thread, but here we are. Thanks to @BoxedandRibboned for the original thread.

Tried to post the tattle link and it got auto removed?! Is that not allowed?

So it would appear

Even allowing for this being an English version of the Dutch translation of the original, I'll copy out the tweet above (removing names etc, to make it deletion proof, I hope). This comes, the tweet says, just after the first "mistranslation" - if anyone has a copy of the book, would they be kind and post the English published version? The prose is positively tortured!

"Even after Meghan and Charles by letter discussed about probable unconscious bias within the family, after it was revealed that (NAME 1) and (NAME 2) took part in such discussions about Archie, (NAME 2) has avoided discussing the subject with (Meghan, described by her relationship to NAME 2)"

I thought that seemed plausible, but the second except which names BOTH people is not like that. It’s a different paragraph (either before or after the initial one that got leaked) and there are no stray colons, commas, colons or any other punctuation that could account for the mistake or change the meaning in such a way if it were mis-typed.

I hadn't seen the second paragraph before I posted but now I have through the link here and -yes, oh dear.

themessygarden · 29/11/2023 08:58

The extract with the 2nd name is not remotely a mistranslation.

As others have said, it appears the Dutch publishers incorrectly got an original version of the book.

Can ypu
link it? I can’t find anything, not being Twitter-literate

Sorry, I can't, because it's libellous.

jeffgoldblum · 29/11/2023 08:58

Thanks for the twitter link !
Well the shits going to hit the fan now!!

BoohooWoohoo · 29/11/2023 08:59

Rick Evers is a good source for what is in this “mistranslated” version.

I feel sorry for the translators being blamed for someone else’s mistake or games. They must have been given a previous version (meaning OS lied that he’s never named them) or the publishers sent an edited version (meaning that it’s not the translators’ fault)
After this incident and Spare in Spain, are publishers trying to get tabloids to buy every language version of royal books in future?

Lockupyourbiscuits · 29/11/2023 08:59

Im sure they are elated they have tarred their two most hated people
Its clear Meghan has held a grudge against the second person due to the slights she had previously overblown
Jeez you wouldn’t want to cross her she doesn’t let things drop

So more than one discussion and after Archie was born?

Rinoachicken · 29/11/2023 09:01

If I was the 2nd person, I’d get up and walk out of any room they walked into - cameras or not.

Lockupyourbiscuits · 29/11/2023 09:01

Charles is a complete idiot trying to explain in a letter
It was just weaponised as another “reciept “

the queen was too canny to do that

Bookworm1111 · 29/11/2023 09:01

Just reminding everyone what MN's reply was yesterday about posting the names and being libellous. It's on us, not MN.

At Mumsnet, we have a strict process that we follow in accordance with the defamation act (if an official complaint is made).

When the complaint is made, we would then follow the legal process and the posts would either be removed at the users request, or the user would choose to stand by their post. Ultimately, users are responsible for what they post on Mumsnet - like many other places on the Internet.

So when we said it's not libel, we meant that we wouldn't remove posts that were potentially libellous because we don't make that decision. They may well be libellous but as per procedure, that's not our call. Our process is in line with the current legal guidelines around libel.

HeliumChestedTrollop · 29/11/2023 09:01

ah worked out the 2nd person but dont know the 1st

Vespanest · 29/11/2023 09:03

It sort of makes sense for the rest of the book, if the original was intended to name then the earlier attacks would then be (to Scobie) an understandable plot arc.

Livelovebehappy · 29/11/2023 09:03

Does anyone really care? The comment wasn’t racist anyway. A vile individual acting as a mouthpiece for a vile couple (laughable that he is still insisting they didn't feed him the information for his book. How else did he get it? Hardly looks like he mixes in Royal circles).

HonoriaLucastaDelagardie · 29/11/2023 09:04

(NAME 2) has avoided discussing the subject with (Meghan, described by her relationship to NAME 2)

If I was Name 2, I wouldn't be telling M what I had for breakfast, never mind discussing anything potentially sensitive or controversial.

(Edited to bold quoted text.)

themessygarden · 29/11/2023 09:06

The only upside is there is now no doubt at all who was feeding Scobie the information, the proof is finally there, the book is Meghan’s, ghost written by Scobie.

Considering Scobie couldn’t say who the racists are because of libel laws in the UK, can he now be sued? Even if he didn’t intend for it to be published.

Sounds like they were planning on continuing to attack the RF.

But since the Queens death they have been trying to build bridges.

So got Scobie to change the book and get the names removed.

This isn't gonna help their cause. I really think they've severed all relationships with the RF now.

And obviously no one believes their-we had nothing to do with this book.

miri1985 · 29/11/2023 09:07

@EdithWeston This is how it appears in the English version. My question is if this is correct and the discussions were had without Harry and Meghan present, how did they find out and how do they know that the discussions with what is described as "concerns" were correct.

The way the English version is phrased, I wouldn't have thought it was the person named in the Dutch version

He would never have been able to publish the names without being in possession of proof, such as a copy of the letter or a signed statement from MM confirming the contents. His publisher's lawyers wouldn't have allowed it to be included because a) it's libellous and defamatory and b) they'd have had to give the Royals right of reply ahead of publication. If they did that, the book could end up being pulled entirely, or it would have to contain the Royals' denial to every accusation he makes, which would then rubbish his narrative.

themessygarden · 29/11/2023 09:11

How can any business, organisation or charity have anything to do with Harry and Meghan after this, it’s as bad, if not worse than the online bullying and trolling they claim to want to eradicate.

Serenster · 29/11/2023 09:12

I feel sorry for the translators being blamed for someone else’s mistake or games.

This! Some poor professional translator in the Netherlands is having their reputation completely unfairly criticised because it suits Omid to pass this off as a translation error. If you compare the two passages in the English language version and the Dutch version translated back into English, they are completely different. It’s ridiculous to ask us to believe that a translator missed an entire sentence out, imagined a name that wasn’t isn’t the text and inserted it, and mixed up whether there were one or two people being identified in Meghan’s correspondence.

themessygarden · 29/11/2023 09:13

And their poor kids hearing about this,

cheezncrackers · 29/11/2023 09:14

The book was published in the US on Monday.

Plenty of time for H&M's PR team to draft a statement saying they had no hand in any of it and don't stand by any of the assertions contained therein.

And yet the silence from Montecito is deafening ....

Rinoachicken · 29/11/2023 09:14

How would a translator even know what names to put in there unless they were already there?! Particularly Name 2, which isn’t used in the entire English passage at all!
