Anyone got any idea what the costs of Earthshot might be this year or what they were last year?

Last time the accounts were published Willy had spent over £12m to dish out £5m in prizes.

AFAICS he's claiming costs will be less now but as we've got to wait a while for both sets of accounts thanks to the split from the umbrella organisation I'd quite like to get at least a ballpark figure.

It all looks very expensive glamorous.

Edited

It’s a standalone company now, no longer part of the Royal Foundation. Its accounts aren’t due until December this year.

I'm genuinely excited to hear what the 15 finalists this year will be. @MamoruHisaishi P I might start a new thread for that when they are announced, I'm sorry the caps in the title of this one are bugging me!

colourwheelofortune · 19/09/2023 18:37

I'm really looking forward to this prestigious event and I'm sure it will be glossy and classy. Can't wait for the women's clothes (frivolous I know) especially Catherine as she always smashes these events.

On a serious note its fabulous that young people are encouraged to think outside the box and look for solutions. I still remember the wind up radio, although its probably been superseded by a solar panel one.
No idea or interested in the overall cost because the message is also about pushing the green agenda, and that is cost free but priceless. The number of businesses involved means the staging costs are irrelevant as the benefit will be in greater awareness and involvement in the business community. Its also inspirational to the worldwide community. I've no idea why a few people feel the need to piss on a parade designed to raise awareness of creativity and innovation, and try in a small way to secure our children's future and wellbeing.

I genuinely can’t wait either, I was equally as exited about the Invictus games! Both men are doing some really positive impactive work! But yes feel free to make a new thread once the nominations are announced because it’s driving me insane posters moaning about Catherine’s coats, Camilla’s handbags and a couple of posters calling William “Willy” his name is William it’s like nails down a blackboard for me, they sound like they are at school, I thought you had to be 18 to post on forums …..

Mylovelygreendress · 19/09/2023 20:00

Such a brilliant initiative.

Uh-huh. It became an independent charity in July 2022 which means no accounts were filed for 2021.

Do you know if/when we get to see those for that 'incredibly successful' year or will it only be the 2022 accounts that see the light of day?

CathyorClaire · 19/09/2023 20:41

Willy's jumping on yet another bandwagon to make himself look busy and relevant.

We're constantly told the royals' charity work is a big part of the reason to keep them in which case a look at the detail is entirely justified.

colourwheelofortune · 19/09/2023 20:47

@Ineedwinenow Yes the constant childish reference to 'Willy' is very irritating. The people opting to call William by his childhood name would be disgusted if others referred to 'the Harkles' ' Meegain' 'Harold' and so on, because that is equally childish.

Roussette · 19/09/2023 20:50

No different to Harold then

It's what they called each other when they were getting on and what a constant poster on here calls Harry

CathyorClaire · 19/09/2023 20:56

Quite.

And as I'm all for equality in nicknames I use both and will continue to do so 😎

Anyone finding it grates is free to scroll on by and miss my very pertinent points

Ineedwinenow · 19/09/2023 20:59

Harold is ridiculous too they are grown men!

Maybe you could take it up with Harold who unleashed both monikers albeit on a willing world then?

I don’t get involved with Royal family threads as people are just awful both to Harry & Meghan and William & Catherine , I’m only on this thread as it was supposed to be about the nominations but turned into a moaning thread about how William & Catherine are helping to destroy the planet!

Threads wander but that's not to say there's not a valid point in there.

Willy (like Harold) seems rather too fond of the 'do as I say, not as I do' school of climate change finger-wagging.

Don’t we all though! There is only so much we can do as human.

Both Harry and William have to travel due to their worldwide commitments (and both support climate charities) which when you run worldwide organisations you need to be in each country, I’m exactly the same as them, I work in conservation and fly all over the world and probably own more handbags ( rucksacks) than Camilla and definitely more coats than Catherine but I do my best to give back where I can! It’s all we can do and I admire both of the men for their contributions to making a difference,

Surely whether you love H&M and hate C&C ( and vice versa) you can see that all of them are trying their best and have to be worldwide for their charities to succeed

I think their charitable endeavours (which very often mirror existing charities) are a PR ploy to boost their public profile.

The royals charitable 'work' revolves in the main around their own charities which probably explains some 76% of charities with a royal patronage never seeing 'their' royals' face darken the door from one year's end to another.

I’m not entirely sure the contestants of Invictus or the nominees of Earthshot would agree with you but everyone is allowed to have an opinion and my opinion differs to yours as I genuinely believe both these initiatives are making a huge difference to our lives, but obviously your opinion is as valid as mine

Surely you should know that the first of the 3 'R' s is reduce? So before you reuse and recycle you need to reduce consumption. Fine, flying is part of your job, but flying for leisure as all the Royals do on an almost weekly basis can be reduced. As can the huge amounts they waste on coats, clothes, houses that lie empty. If you have almost unlimited wealth you can do more than most. The Late Queen negotiated opt out from environmental legislation in Scotland at the same time as she was berating people at the COP conference in Glasgow for 'saying but not doing' to rapturous applause, while she bought her grandson helicopters, put her single unemployed son into a 30 room mansion and bought him a range rover for his birthday. The Royals have far too many homes and estates that are chronically underused. They are in no way doing 'what they can' even with all the resources they have at their disposal. Thats just for the little people. All the Royals, including William and Charles to a lesser extent are do as I say so I dont have to.

colourwheelofortune · 20/09/2023 12:28

The mode of transport the RF use, or there housing is unimportant in the grand scheme of things. Whether people like it or not they are the Royal family and they do things differently than us mortals, just like the US President, or the Swedish royal family. Helicopters have come a long way and modern ones are far less of a climate issue. It makes sense to fly in a helicopter a short distance than all the fuss of arranging convoys of diesel cars or even a whole train. Time is valuable when you are rich and important, and again, like it or not they are.

William was in New York and visited a Fire Station and the crowds were large and enthusiastic. I doubt these visits have a lot of prior warning because of the risk of terrorists, so it was nice to see him interacting with the crowd. Great that he is so popular in America, and can focus some light on his Earthshot project.

Roussette · 20/09/2023 12:58

A helicopter produces approximately 950 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions per hour; the average car produces 22 pounds per hour. Even less quite obviously for electric cars

No need for diesel cars, why would the RF not use EVs

DewinDwl · 20/09/2023 14:00

Well IMO the royals appear to be time-rich. Yes the train from London to west Wales takes a fuckload of time. The state of the line and the way the route is ran is an embarrassment and a disgrace. Clearly the royals agree with me and chose the convenient but not environmentally friendly option. Shame because I think they can afford the time and the inconvenience - unlike the many people who use that route of which I am one.

The royals and especially William (because of Earthshot) could definitely be doing more on terms of showing alternative, environmentally sound ways of doing things. It doesn't even take that much effort or inconvenience, it's more a question of mindset and imagination. I am just a bit frustrated at the royals with this, they could be leading the way but everything seems a bit like an afterthought.

🙄Are you serious? I thought this kind of sycophancy went out with the Middle Ages.

Serenster · 20/09/2023 16:02

Not at all a security risk, a group of VIPs hanging out in a motorway services while the car recharges 🤣

CathyorClaire · 20/09/2023 16:06

Indeed it would be if they were paying for it but they're not.

It makes sense to fly in a helicopter a short distance than all the fuss of arranging convoys of diesel cars or even a whole train.

Why would it take a whole train?

Harold made do with a single carriage.
