"As you also probably know, she would have been the first person to insist that I still come to be with you all instead of going to her."

He is referring to the Queen.

Is he saying this is why he is not at Balmoral with the rest of the RF? Is this what he means by "going to her"?

It was the Ich bin ein Dusseldorfer that I noticed. I'm old enough to remember JFK's Ich bin ein Berliner speech and it made me cringe when Harry did it. Does he think he another JFK?

It was such an important speech, I suppose for younger people it won't have the same resonance.

I'm not sure what he meant about the Queen wanting him to be there.

I thought he meant the Queen would want him doing his duty.

If you had your phone out because, I don't know, you were a tourist at a tourist attraction or something, it would take seconds to take a photo of a celeb!

They could have seen him going in and got their phone ready to get a photo of him coming out. That seems reasonable to me. I don't know who took the photo though.

Probably but it wasn't very clear hence people interpreting it in more than one way.

Agree - that is a bit cringey.

That was the Invictus speech I think not the Wellchild speech. Overall I thought the Invictus speech was good but very TED talky.

MrsMaxDeWinter · 11/09/2023 18:42

"Ich bin ein Berliner" is a famous line from JFK that has been mimicked by many people, from politicians to others, making speeches in Germany. Harry is not the forts to do it, nor will he be the last, and I don't think he thinks he's JFK anymore than his father quoting Shakespeare thinks he is the Bard.

Of course some of you found it cringey. Everything he does is cringey to you.

It got huge applause and was appreciated by the audience he spoke to.

It was a very impressive speech, full of charm, and delivered with passion, and delivered completely without notes.

Harry is often called "thick" on Mumsnet ... but the only person I remember in that family giving a speech completely without notes is Meghan.

As I remember it, it was a bit cringey when JFK did it too as a Berliner is a type of doughnut so Ich Bin Ein Berliner literally translated as I am a doughnut. I think that crowd appreciated the intention but it did cause smirks. Fortunately for Harry I don't think there is a cake called a Dusseldorfer 😀

MrsMaxDeWinter · 11/09/2023 19:13

@meercat23

I speak German. That is actually an urban legend, look it up.

The doughnut in question is actually called a Pfannkuchen, not a Berliner.

Ein Berliner means a man from Berlin. A woman would be called "eine Berlinerin".

Just as well it wasn't Frankfurt either 😁

I did find this on Wiki but they could be a later invention to piggyback on the old tale. It was just meant to be a light hearted comment.

They used a helicopter?
i thought William was doing earth shot. Surely he wouldn’t have done that

It’s almost like it was just a couple of weeks ago that posters were telling us they wouldn’t have criticised William for flying all the way to Australia to watch the World Cup final because it was his duty….

MrsMaxDeWinter · 11/09/2023 20:20

Also on Wikipedia for you @meercat23

There is a widespread misconception that Kennedy accidentally said that he was a Berliner, a German doughnut specialty. This is an urban legend which emerged several decades after the speech, and it is not true that residents of Berlin in 1963 would have mainly understood the word "Berliner" to refer to a jelly doughnut or that the audience laughed at Kennedy's use of this expression – if nothing else because this type of doughnut is called "Pfannkuchen" (literally: Pan cake) in Berlin.

MrsMaxDeWinter · 11/09/2023 20:24

@StormzyinaTCup and @Mornusting

Just as Meghan and Harry are disparagingly called the "Harkles", William and Kate are frequently called WanK on Twitter, and their more rabid fans are called WanKers.

So Wanker is very much taken!!

StormzyinaTCup · 11/09/2023 20:39

Oh that's unfortunate, looks like it's going to have to be Rimstinger then! 😉

Not guilty 😁

But only because I'd have criticised the ridiculous expense involved. I still think he could have interrupted his fulsome me-time to sit in a field watching a big screen with a pint and surrounded by cheering plebs.

There is only one way to get to Australia, really and that's to fly.

I didn't realise you could only travel to Wales by helicopter.

I don't find everything he does cringey at all. There are certain speeches I just don't think people should try to imitate, this is one, I have a dream is another, Never in the field of human conflict is another one. They are iconic and also reference a particular time and situation. Might not mean it to you but it does to me.

derxa · 11/09/2023 20:56

cheering plebs Oh dear...

Iwasafool · 11/09/2023 20:57

I just had a very horrible vision of Boris Johnson doing the Never in the field of human conflict speech about Ukraine. I think that would be ultimate cringe.

derxa · 11/09/2023 21:01

There's enough space in the world for both Harry and William's activities. I applaud Harry's Invictus work. I also applaud William's support for sport in this country. It's a good thing that they do

That's true, it doesn't have to be one or the other, both are worthwhile things to support (and I don't even like sport but I accept it is important to lots of people.)
