My heart goes out to the family and friends of Colonel Sergiy.💐

Last year, one of their coaches was killed in the war before the Games, also. We saw him in the documentary, giving encouragement to team members. His Ukrainian team members carried a picture of him into the games last year. They did the same for Taira as she was still being held prisoner.

Heartbreaking

He got a nice Invictus sheet cake as well. They must be looking forward to celebrating with the kiddos!

Poland vs Colombia was a thrilling match. A fitting end to the penultimate day. Looking forward to Archery and the closing ceremony.

MissElinorDashwood · 16/09/2023 11:32

It really was!

“Prince Harry, the human touch that he has is simply extraordinary. He came around & spoke to every single athlete…He was amazing. And w/o Prince Harry’s advocacy & constant commitment to this process, individual lives like mine would’ve never been touched.”

"The nation is incredibly grateful to him"

Minister for Veterans' Affairs @JohnnyMercerUK paid tribute to Prince Harry and a "legacy he can be proud of" with the Invictus games.

Have people actually been watching this? I haven’t seen any coverage on the TV, just comments about M’s outfits on X 🙄

ALittleTeawithmilk · 16/09/2023 11:45

That is lovely. Thanks for the link @MissElinorDashwood .

The IG seem to be a very positive experience for the Veterans, their families - especially the children.

Yes, I was able to watch some of it on you tube cbc. It was not in real time and my internets been down all week so I’ve watched on my mobile phone, but what I’ve seen had been really wonderful.

queentim · 16/09/2023 20:30

Currently watching the Closing Ceremony.

It's really beautiful

I feel like I'm posting on 5 different threads! I've confused myself 😂

Iwantcakeeveryday · 16/09/2023 20:56

Same! I loved it, just finished.... it was awesome and I wish I could go to the next one in Vancouver... maybe! Looks like fun and volunteering would be an honour. Its great to spend time on positive things and watching happy people :)

Viviennemary · 17/09/2023 09:13

Not seen a single thing about this on TV. But I haven't looked for it.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 17/09/2023 11:57

Absolutely magnificent wasn't it? As was the whole event come to that
A whole week of inspiring talent, love and support, and not a single moment to spoil it

More of this please, Harry Smile

YupIKnow · 17/09/2023 16:41

Yes I have to agree that coverage has been low apart from articles about Harry and then Meghan's clothes. It's obviously a very niche thing.

TallerSally · 17/09/2023 16:52

Now that the 2023 version has been an unmitigated success, only the most malign would begrudge Prince Harry the credit for founding, sustaining over the past decade, and tirelessly championing in person the Invictus Games.

Of course he didn't do this single-handedly. But the Games remain his vision, he has ensured there is an organisation with funding and staff to delivery it, and he has helped by going around the world meeting vets and their families, securing sponsors like Boeing, collaboration from veterans associations, and support from government officials such as the President of Germany and Justin Trudeau the Prime Minister of Canada, and making Heart of Invictus documentary on Netflix, and securing advertisers and and and...

The man has come a long way since the days when I used to dismiss him as a distasteful pr*t for wearing a Nazi uniform to a party. And somehow, his transformation, his metamorphosis from mindless sloane ranger to award-winning author, Invictus Games founder and sponsor, 8-hr witness box testifier, father of two and husband of the woman most written-about and attacked for being a mixed-heritage progressive, is quite a sight to behold.

He has had to show incredible resilience at pivotal points in his life journey (as he writes about in his excellent autobiography, Spare), and particularly in the past year. Blasted on all sides by the vengeful UK/Murdoch media, with his own family colluding to bring about his exclusion and attempting to sabotage everything he and Meghan do, he's kept his head down and carried on, walking his own talk to vets and others about mental health and resilience.

So here I am, admiring the man, now. Recognising that he is as imperfect as any other human, but consciously choosing to support him as one of the few progressive icons retaining somewhat of a voice in a world of Elon Musks, Andrew Tates, Donald Trumps, Jeremy Clarksons, Piers Morgans, Russell Brands etc.

Because that's what is a stake here - this goes beyond just the RF's Harry-demolition agenda, their response to the existential threat that Harry and Meghan pose to them. That is in some ways a UK-specific problem. I believe the broader societal stakes (call it the culture war) are the reason some outside the UK are joining the RF/UK/Murdoch media in their H&M hatchet job, e.g. Trump singling out Meghan out of the blue recently in a conversation about debates.

So progressives of the world, show some support for your icons, or there soon won't be any left!

Blimey what a speech! You should reach out to Harold and he may employ you for his 2025 sermon.

It is a success because he was given the support, encouragement and platform for being in the rf in 2014. The rf who he has since repeatedly told tales about and said how very horrid they were. The fact he did a couple of short tours of Afghanistan certainly wasn't the reason.

The veterans deserve so much better than this self serving MoanALot.

So 'here I am' not admiring the deeply flawed and rather wibbly man .

Roussette · 17/09/2023 17:47

What a shame to end the Invictus Games on such a mean spirited post.

I'm so glad we don't all feel like that. Listening to his closing speech, it was great and really quite moving. As was the speech from the German President. And Sam Ryder, love him!

Normal service seems to have been resumed 🥺

colourwheelofortune · 17/09/2023 17:50

Well Harry was not the founder of the IG. It was set up by the Royal Foundation and the patrons were William, Kate and Harry. The man who did all the actual work in organising the games was the same one who did the London Olympics.

I suspect Harry does very little of the actual organising.

Harry book spare has received NO awards. It sold worldwide because it dished the dirt on others particularly the royal family. It was not a masterpiece.

Harry sat in the witness box at the old bailey and admitted he had no evidence to support his case.

His wife was attacked in the press for lying about her inlaws, making the end of life experience of the Queen miserable, making ridiculous word salad speeches, flying private jet while lecturing about the environment, wearing designer clothes to read to impoverished children, trying to destroy the BFR but claiming titles for her kids and clinging on to her own ... I could go on...

Icons they ain't.
