“Prince Harry and Meghan cheer on the children of participants as they participate in the children's race.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex gave the kids medals after.
The Invictus Games is a family affair”.

I think it was lovely that the children of veterans were also honoured. As said throughout these games and the Heart of Invictus documentary, the whole family is making a sacrifice for their country.

I also noticed that medals are always given out to the ‘support teams’ of each sport/team. Their job is to offer support to the veterans when training and competing.

I’m impressed.

I’m posting these pictures because, well, they’re just too darn cute not to.

Retired Chief Master Sgt. Garrett Kuwada says hanging with Prince Harry is a highlight of the 2023 Invictus Games.

Speaking of Prince Harry, "He’s a veteran, and like all vets, when we get together, we talk, laugh, joke and tease each other. He’s just like one of the guys, it was an amazing experience. He makes you feel like you’ve known him forever."

After a ruptured brain aneurysm in 2016, Garrett has navigated a loss of coordination and balance, hearing, vision, speech and cognitive function, per the 15th Wing. He retired from the Air Force in 2018 after over 27 years of service and has found strength in competing in the Department of Defense's Warrior Games and the Invictus Games

Thanks @MissElinorDashwood the photos are lovely and what a sweet and thoughtful idea to honour the whole support team, including the children. Its a unique event and so good to see :) I'll be looking out for table tennis today

Did you know the Invictus Games Foundation runs sporting events for veterans around the year?

Iwantcakeeveryday · 14/09/2023 10:19

yes I did know that, and you can apply for grants for things like expeditions. They definitely want to do more than just the games, which is great.

Yes what a lovely idea. Their families must go through so much when their loved ones go to war, and then to have to deal with so much when they come back so damaged. The recognition for them andcthe support teams must make them feel on top ofvyhe world.

The Invictus Games have PEERS, who are trained in psychological first aid and will take care of the invisibly injured service women and men during the national civil defence test, today.

Wow @MissElinorDashwood , they've really thought of everything. I can imagine that for some of the vets, the experience must be overwhelming. I recall in Heart of Invictus the Canadian vet who was still sipping from his flask in front of the cameras at the previous Invictus games, and candidly admitted still struggling with alcohol. Shows Invictus isn't a panacea, nor is it meant to be - it's just a big bump for folks whose lives have been turned upside down by severe trauma.

Team UK:

“Great to see Mike be able to continue to compete and find success. Heartbreaking injury but his teammates also showed the Invictus spirit by helping him make it down the long jump runway so that he could do one jump.”

Derek Cobbinah, the facilitator for the Nigerian team, made a very sad revelation about people with disabilities in Africa. He explained:

"The stigma around disability of people in Africa…people [in African society] don't understand when people are disabled so in that situation they are kept away from public view. Everywhere in Africa, people do not actually see disabled people doing a lot of sports. It's not that common, so for the first time, for Invictus to come in and bring an element of hope in terms of people with disabilities coming up and doing more, and being be integrated into society.

"And it helps infrastructure as well, to be more disability friendly. Because now we can have hotels and everything that have got access for people as well."

This is so important for the country, as they have hopes of hosting one of the upcoming Invictus Games.

That is absolutely awful. Didn't the south Korean team say similar?

Makes you proud that our country is so diverse and inclusive.

At Invictus Games, Paralympians and aspiring stars celebrate the power of Para sport

"The Invictus Games 2023 also had the presence and support of well-known Paralympians, such as German track and field athlete Felix Streng and American swimmer Ellizabeth Marks, both gold medallists in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.
“It is a really special event because I see so many inspiring people who have overcome personal challenges and I see how they grow and how sports are part of the inclusion they learn and the rehabilitation they undergo”, said Streng, one of the ambassadors of the competition.

The 28-year-old added that although Invictus Games is not about elite sporting performances as the Paralympics, it has the same component of using sports to integrate the participants into daily life activities and society itself."

Wonderful to hear that some participants take it to the elite level!

The competition reflects what Para sport can do to benefit people with disabilities, which is one of the core objectives of the Paralympic Movement

Oh that is so sad, I didn't know that he had died. Its all so awful, 💐for his family and friends, and Ukraine.

skullbabe · 15/09/2023 01:58

How incredibly sad - a real and sober reminder of the reason there is an Invictus games in the first place

ALittleTeawithmilk · 15/09/2023 03:20

My heart goes out to the family and friends of Colonel Sergiy.💐

Last year, one of their coaches was killed in the war before the Games, also. We saw him in the documentary, giving encouragement to team members. His Ukrainian team members carried a picture of him into the games last year. They did the same for Taira as she was still being held prisoner.
