Yes, I agree and it's terrible the lack of support these people have when they leave the Forces. We know that homelessness and mental health problems are endemic. Imagine serving in Afghanistan, coming home to unemployment and ending up queuing at a soup kitchen. What a tragedy.

It happened to WW1 vets. It’s great to see how things have changed. Ultimately Games like this are air fluff and everyone says how marvellous it is and blah blah but does anyone actually try and help the situation?

@AuroraCake that is true to an extent, same with the para olympics. once they are over , disabled people are forgotten again.

There's a local charity which helps homeless and unemployed ex Forces. It helps with education and training and housing. Sometimes they just need to get on their feet again, to be able to not worry where the next meal is coming from, or how reduced they've become, sleeping in the doorway of Boots.

I suggest for your own sake , you don't go there @flapjackfairy .

Which ultimately is what is needed and should be what people are encouraged to support. Games like this have their place but they don’t put food on the table. I wonder of William’s homeless initiative thing will dedicate time to dealing with the service people issue. I hope so.

Also many people, not all, go into the military to give them stability and a chance in life and if they are then injured out. What do they have? Banardos basically raised children for domestic service but none had homes and many asked to come back once they retired. Broke my heart.

You're right, @AuroraCake - homeless charities are not attractive. Animal charities tend to get more support. If you come out of the army and you have a home, a supportive family and chances in life, your outlook is far brighter than those with little or no prospects.

Animals and children have the eternal vulnerability. They cannot help themselves and so people are almost programmed to help. I once set on peer for an hour one Christmas watching a lost baby seal. One person told me the refuge had received 100s of calls about him. Not a person on the street. I mentioned it at home and was rather wisely told that people will help where they see total vulnerability. But vulnerability is deeper than not being able to walk and talk.

I have a lot of respect for JJ Chalmers, who competed in Strictly. He never felt sorry for himself, never dwelt on his misfortune, just enjoyed competing and did his best to overcome difficulties. I think that raised a lot of awareness about injured veterans and their everyday struggles.

It's not even the first time; he did it at a previous Invictus with ridiculous remarks about being needed "to see the Queen had the right people around her" and incredible claims about her discussing things with him which she couldn't with anyone else

Foolish I guess, but I did hope he'd avoid chucking any further meat to the wolves for this Invictus - after all he doesn't lack opportunities for speaking out at other times
