Meghan for White House?

LadyMuckingabout · 01/08/2023 08:31

Apparently Joe Biden’s sister is backing Meghan for White House.

Any opinions? No wishy-washy ones such as “any US citizen is entitled to run” or “it’s her business” or “she’s better than x or y”.

It seems to me that even if you are a fan, how can you argue that she has political experience? And although a foreign-born spouse isn’t a barrier (eg Ivana), having a foreign title surely is a problem.

For goodness sake.
This just seems like a he said, she said, flimsy excuse for (another) let's bash Meghan thread.
Has Meghan actually said she's running for the presidency???
No.

RuthTopp · 01/08/2023 08:37

Tbh the sister is just another human , same as you or I , and will hold no political gravitas .
I could suggest your dog wins the next Crufts or you could mine, except I have no idea if you have one , and neither do I !
It's just random prattle .

There have been a number of rumours about Meghan having political ambitions.

But I don't buy in to them:

  • She clearly wouldn't be up for the level of intrusive press that goes with the scrutiny of candidates.
  • She's not rich enough to stand as an independent.
  • She doesn't have the background in representations roles of Reagan (or others such as Newman at a more local level)
  • Nor does she have an "in" to US political circles (like Schwartzenegger by marriage)
  • She does not have a reputation (at present) for being able to maintain the levels of confidentiality to cut the sort of deals needed to get the backing required for even local level representational politics, let alone national, let alone presidential.

If she started smaller, and gained experience with some successes in local/functional representational roles (maybe unions, local community organizations - not "collaboration with") then maybe. But I just don't see it in the short term, because if she really had ambitions then I think we'd see the groundwork

Oh good grief.

Still, any Biden backing you has got to be the kiss of death.

CurlewKate · 01/08/2023 08:57

Meghan Markel "I think I might stand for chair of the PTA this year."
Press "Now deluded Meg want to be President! Another insult to Royal Family!"

This appears to be from an interview Valerie Biden gave. What she said was obviously in response to direct questioning about Meghan:

“We embrace all women and we welcome her to come in and join the Democratic Party,” she added.
When asked if she thought the Duchess of Sussex would make a good candidate for the presidency, Ms Biden Owens said, “yes, perhaps, of course, she will”.

It was reported as if Valerie B spontaneously said that she's backing a (so far non-existent) bid by Meghan for the Whitehouse, without reporting the questions that prompted what she said.
She could hardly have replied that they don't want Meghan in the Democrats (why wouldn't they?) and she'd be a terrible president. She was being as diplomatic as possible when, seemingly, caught on the hop by a question about someone in the public eye.

Don't know about the OP, but I found reports from the Mail, Telegraph and the Independent simply by Googling "Valerie Biden Meghan Markle". Luckily I was already on the internet because I was looking at MN.

Thanks for this. Good to have context.

Yes, I definitely think MM would like to do this. She's worked for the UN and part of her degree was in International Relations. She's also a social justice advocate especially in the area of feminism. So I think she could potentially have politics in mind for the future.

The only problem I can see is the Duchess of Sussex title as Americans are obviously very proud of being a republic. But I actually think she's more recognisable as Meghan Markle anyway.

As @WinnieTheW0rm says, America is not really a true democracy in that if you want to get into politics you have to be super rich or have connections (or ideally both). So MM would have to find a sort of sponsor or mentor within the Democratic Party. My understanding is that she already has connections with the Kennedy family and the Biden family. So, it might take a good five or ten years to establish herself in political circles properly but I think she could do it.

Did Ronald Regan have much experience?

Riapia · 01/08/2023 13:38

😱😂😂😂😂😂

WandaWonder · 01/08/2023 12:49

Did Ronald Regan have much experience?

He was Governor of California and held various posts within acting unions prior to that. If Meghan was willing to get experience and work her way up (plus I think the rules say she'd need to drop her title), I don't see a problem with her running. No one could be worse or less qualified than Trump (I hope).

FloofCloud · 01/08/2023 13:46

Worked in the UN as part of her degree ... well if that is all it takes I'll be curing cancer as I did cancer research as part of my degree - I'll have it done by Christmas folks!

ILikeDinosaurs · 01/08/2023 14:05

🙄She's not said she's intending to do anything of the sort, so let's not get ahead of ourselves

Samcro · 01/08/2023 14:06

another day another silly rumour.

polkadotdalmation · 01/08/2023 18:16

Links with the Bidens? Didn't get them a free hitched lift home though? I think she's interested in politics so nothing wrong with testing the waters, but you need deep pockets and thick skin to be a politician

Certainly can't be worse than Trump or Biden.

That would be extremely helpful, Floof 😂

Molly70 · 01/08/2023 21:11

There’s no way Meghan will run for President. Her opponent just needs to keep showing clips where she told Oprah that Kate made her cry. That will bury any hopes she has. Alongside all the other video clips of her crying

MillWood85 · 01/08/2023 21:19

Meghan doesn't do "criticism" and goes full nuclear with her legal teams.

She'd last around 15 minutes in politics.

LegendsBeyond · 01/08/2023 21:21

What a ridiculous idea. She doesn’t have the intellect or resilience to do anything close to a good job. It’s a complete non-starter.

Mylovelygreendress · 01/08/2023 21:22

She is far too think skinned for the tough world of politics plus there is no way she will give up her title .

Mylovelygreendress · 01/08/2023 21:22

Thin not think *

DinnaeFashYersel · 01/08/2023 21:25

It's a dreadful idea.

But then so was/is trump.

I guess a country daft enough to vote for him could be daft enough to vote for her.
