Meghan for White House?

LadyMuckingabout · 01/08/2023 08:31

Apparently Joe Biden’s sister is backing Meghan for White House.

Any opinions? No wishy-washy ones such as “any US citizen is entitled to run” or “it’s her business” or “she’s better than x or y”.

It seems to me that even if you are a fan, how can you argue that she has political experience? And although a foreign-born spouse isn’t a barrier (eg Ivana), having a foreign title surely is a problem.

If Hillary Clinton with all her experience couldn't make it to the White House, Meghan Markle's got no chance!

LadyMuckingabout · 02/08/2023 14:04

People say she’s thin-skinned, but she - and Harry - are simultaneously in possession of the hides of rhinos.

She is whatever people want to project on to her, to fit their biases.

Hillary Clinton didn't make it to the White House because of the appalling misogynist abuse she was subjected to. I personally think MM would be good in Democratic politics. Although, given the misogynistic abuse she has already been subjected to, and given Kamala Harris gets much the same thing, I'm not surprised that she has officially counted it out.

newfloorplease · 02/08/2023 17:44

How come we so rarely hear of Kamala Harris on this side of the Atlantic.
Does she keep an equally low profile in the US ?

onlylarkin · 02/08/2023 17:48

IMO Kamala does keep a low profile here in the US as well. The reason why is subject to opinion amd not worth a debate on the Royals board.

I wonder where the idea that Meghan was running for President came from? I don't remember her saying it. This is one rumor thay won't die.

Port1aCastis · 02/08/2023 17:51

What a lot of rubbish.

Spectre8 · 02/08/2023 22:31

So she hasn't said she wants to be president, bidens sister was merely being polite when answering a question ...

Yet let sustainable bash the woman and say she can't do it.

I mean ffs come on do better. Why hate on a woman unnecessarily.

AutumnCrow · 08/08/2023 15:15

I wonder where the idea that Meghan was running for President came from?

According to this piece of tat illustrious publication, some guy called Omid Scobie.

It's from March 2021.

Meghan for President 2024? Rumour has it she's going to run

I wish people would stop saying this about MM. It happens with other American celebrities too (Robert Redford, George Clooney etc) and it’s tedious. I blame Ronald Reagan. Even he didn’t run for the presidency based on his celebrity status. He started his political career in the Screen Actors Guild.
Running for the US presidency requires nerves of steel and extreme stamina. The US primary process is arduous and requires a huge amount of money. Because it’s such a long process, candidates come under a huge amount of scrutiny. It takes a very strong person to get through and they need a great team behind. Honestly, I don’t think M has the characteristics and I think she’d be ripped to shreds by the media.

It feels as though it's even worse now and is open season on the "anyone can be president" spiel after Trump.

He was a terrible president and the elements which led to his election (which are complex and go far back in US history) have created a genuine political crisis that is going to take decades to recover from, if it's even possible.

It's our own fault that celebrity worship has got so far out of hand - this job is one of the most important positions in the world, let alone in the US, you should need specific experience, temperament, and brain power to be allowed anywhere near it. There should also be a retirement age in place for this position, in the same way there's a minimum age requirement. There should definitely be a strict psychological examination and requirement. And I would slip a current affairs and geography test in there too.

It's ridiculous to think that Meghan Markle is in any way near qualified, experienced, or has the right temperament for this job, same for most current celebrities.

wordler · 08/08/2023 19:50

And I don't blame Meghan or George Clooney for these speculative articles appearing - it's clickbait for celebrity gossip writers like Scobie, or a little extra colour for someone interviewing a politician about a dry subject to throw in a celebrity question to get a better headline.

But it's annoying to me that these celebrities don't shut down this nonsense and try to help get our perceptions of what is appropriate and needed for political positions back on track.

We need celebrities who care about the political landscape and what's happening to keep redirecting the attention back to the experts and scientists and career diplomats who know what they are talking about.

everetting · 08/08/2023 19:50

Another made ip thread. This is why all the comments about if only she kept under the radar people would stop bashing are bullshit. She has been under the radar and people just make things up.

Tiqtaq · 08/08/2023 22:04

The USA seems to have pretty low standards in this regard. MM might be an upgrade although I doubt it would help the "special relationship".

Hawkins009 · 08/08/2023 22:07

If it's possible and we can achieve it, then rule britannia, and for England.

I don't know about Clooney but why should M shut rumours down, they happen anyway even if she's not said a word. If she addressed any of the things said about this it would just be used as more ammunition against her. For example if she said "I have no plans to go into politics" people (esp on here) would be saying "that's because she knows she's not popular" or "she's not good enough for the job" etc. Better not to give any fuel to rumours that run by themselves.

EmeraldDuck · 08/08/2023 22:39

No candidate could possibly be worse than Biden, a geriatric who can barely deliver a speech and who’s facilitated the assault on women’s rights, and the equally ancient Trump, who incites riots, sexually assaults women, and is a fan of Putin. What the pair of them did to Afghanistan is beyond comprehension.

Meghan? Fantastic! Anyone else? Fantastic! Really anyone apart from Biden/Trump is an improvement.

And also, if people's perceptions are out of whack about what is appropriate for politics that's their own fault, isn't it? Educate yourself and stop believing every stupid celebrity story and rumour going around and you can stop the nonsense yourself* It's not the celebrity's fault if other people are saying stupid stuff about them is it, and everyone chooses to pile in?

*Don't necc mean you directly @wordler, I mean the "general you".

Inviting a serious argument about whether Meghan Markle should run for president is like inviting a serious argument about how many angels dance on the head of a pin. Utterly irrelevant to real life. Even if Joe Biden's sister (whoever she may be - couldn't name her and I live and vote in the US) asked about those angels in a serious and inquiring voice.

Sometimes, despite myself, I feel bloody sorry for celebrities subject to this nonsense.

It's fascinating where these rumours come from and how they 'get legs'.

This is the earliest article I can find spouting about it, from the Mirror in April 2019. So the story is, she allegedly said something to a friend about it years ago. Big bloody deal - we all say stuff when we're younger about our ambitions. And we even have threads about it on here. 'When I'm the King / the President / God, I'm going to do this ...' Just banter.

Anyway the Palace immediately shut it down. Just, 'No'. But has persisted because 'sources' keep mentioning it. It's probably a 'story' too good to drop.

Meghan once allegedly told a friend she had thought about running for president, but royal sources have now quashed the rumour

Ignoring everything else she’s a woman of colour. So even if she was a top class politician already, the chance of her being nominated 1st on a ticket, then being elected by the population, is virtually zero.

she needs to be an old white man!
