Meghan for White House?

LadyMuckingabout · 01/08/2023 08:31

Apparently Joe Biden’s sister is backing Meghan for White House.

Any opinions? No wishy-washy ones such as “any US citizen is entitled to run” or “it’s her business” or “she’s better than x or y”.

It seems to me that even if you are a fan, how can you argue that she has political experience? And although a foreign-born spouse isn’t a barrier (eg Ivana), having a foreign title surely is a problem.

I can't belive anyone actually believes this. Meghan couldn't take being in the rf, I hardly think she is going to put her self up for something worse(by that I mean the rules)

Meghan doesn't do "criticism" and goes full nuclear with her legal teams.

She'd last around 15 minutes in politics.

How is she any different to Trump? He's as thin skinned as they come.

He really is, isn't he? Look how he's he gone after Fani Willis the prosecutor, with his disgusting accusations (all projection of course).

He's in a lot of trouble now; and he's going to go down screaming and writhing. I think anyone sensible who was going to make a run for President would be wise to wait till he's, erm, fully exited the stage. (Where's the Praetorian Guard when you need one?)

Fulton county prosecutors to seek new 2020 election charges next week

District attorney Fani Willis had indicated to her staff they were sufficiently prepared to go to trial tomorrow

Can you imagine Trump crying on camera and thanking someone for asking how he was 😁

I saw his disgusting lies about Fani Willis this morning. I despair that there are people who believe his bullshit.

No candidate could possibly be worse than Biden, a geriatric who can barely deliver a speech and who’s facilitated the assault on women’s rights, and the equally ancient Trump, who incites riots, sexually assaults women, and is a fan of Putin. What the pair of them did to Afghanistan is beyond comprehension.

Meghan? Fantastic! Anyone else? Fantastic! Really anyone apart from Biden/Trump is an improvement.

I was in the US earlier this year and found it hilarious how Fox News went on about the fiasco of the evacuation of Afghanistan, blaming Biden. Like they give a shit about the Afghan people.

AutumnCrow · 09/08/2023 09:54

Realistically, how much would a candidate have to raise to have a serious presidential run? Isn't it many tens of millions of $$? Way more than that?

Ohpleeeease · 09/08/2023 12:19

I’d like to see her put her stamp on the White House. I’m sure it would be very tasteful.

Biden spent just over £1billion on the presidential campaign. Trump only managed to raised £774 million.

Before that many millions will have been spent on the primaries.

You need a bob or two to do this and be an excellent fundraiser.

i know. Meghan has not said she wants to run for the president, but hey let’s talk about it like she has, and criticise her for it.

AliceOlive · 09/08/2023 13:00

The thread title really grates. No one runs “for White House”

Pistolpose · 09/08/2023 13:08

I think she wants to influence American politics, but behind the scenes not as president. She has lobbied and seeks out influential political friends like the Biden and Trudeaus but her scattergun approach to life (royal life, films, podcasts, production) makes me think this is just another interest. Maybe throwing ideas against the wall to see what sticks?

Morestrangerthings1 · 09/08/2023 15:20

She strikes me as politically active. So many people are. I am too. I just don’t have the access to politicians that Meghan has Damn it. I can only write letters.

Wintersgirl · 09/08/2023 16:03

but you need deep pockets and thick skin to be a politician

And she has neither...

Oh good grief.

Still, any Biden backing you has got to be the kiss of death.

I know his cousin, as it happens. The English ones he keeps quiet about whilst banging the Irish drum :D

Alas, he is silent on this matter.

(His son, who was the spitting image of young Joe Biden, used to be in a love triangle with my older sister.)

Actually I can imagine that quite easily.

Thank you, that’s a perfect question, perfect. We’re good, we’re ok, holding up against this terrible witch hunt, terrible, God bless America’

I think Meghans current focus is on the Netflix production of 'meet me at the lake'. For her it's going to be make or break.

Wasn't she meant to be travelling to Japan with Harry for the Sports charity thing? Instead she turned up at a Taylor Swift concert. I think she's a TS super fan and wants her to star in the movie as the heroine. Interesting to see if this happens.

Serenster · 11/08/2023 11:30

People magazine says she was at the Taylor Swift concert, but it’s interesting how there’s absolutely no pictures of her there, when the concert she was said to have attended was the most celebrity-studded given the Hollywood venue. There are huge numbers of tik tok and twitter photos taken by the people in the audience of the many celebrities in the crowd, as well as posed photos as the celebrities entered the venue, but absolutely none of Meghan. Even the person who was clued up enough to contact People to say they had seen her, and recounted what songs Meghan was enjoying the most, didn’t think to take her picture, it seems.

WinnieTheW0rm · 11/08/2023 11:38

I doubt it - there's not that far you can get with both writers and actors on strike. This has to be a longer term project (and Ms Havisham will also be affected, which is why, I assume, that's gone quiet). It may indeed be make or break, but I doubt it'll be her focus until end of strikes when it will be possible to commission a script.

Genuine question - when one buys rights, is there a time limit to start doing something with them, or can you sit on them indefinitely, or does it vary?

polkadotdalmation · 11/08/2023 12:42

@WinnieTheW0rm You can sit in them indefinitely, but it depends on what the contract actually says. No reason not to put in if it's not produced within 5 years the fee is refunded and rights returned. All in the small print, but Disney hung on to the rights of quite a few things for many years I seem to remember.

AutumnCrow · 11/08/2023 18:10

She could have a crack at the screenplay herself.

Serenster · 11/08/2023 18:56

Meghan is a member of SAG though! That would be crossing the picket line, which I can’t imagine she’d do.
