@derxa
He didn’t set it up . It wasn’t his idea.

The whole scheme was the brain child of a head master

But this is the ‘royal’ modus operandi.
Slap your name on it and claim it as your own.

You can have an idea but it takes years of hard work and persistence to create something worthwhile. What is your legacy?

Novella4 · 17/07/2023 19:48

Seriously ?
was that news to you ?

The hard work will have been done by others.
Do you imagine Phil was on the phone to schools ??

The hard work will have been done by others.

Nobody thinks he did it all single-handedly.
But he undoubtedly put time and effort into it. Why wouldn't he? As an ExWW2 Navy man he needed something to do. He had to give up his chosen career while still young.

IamSTARVING · 19/07/2023 04:29

AvaCallanach · 14/07/2023 09:09

He was an outstanding naval man and if he hadn't married the queen would likely have been first sea lord or chief of the defence staff. "Wandering around the world" was of immense frustration to him. He would have been far happier being able to do what he loved and excelled at. They hadn't anticipated the Queen's father dying so young, assumed he'd be able to work for many years.

Tbh I am quite surprised that the queen's spouse was getting less than various chat show hosts.

What point are you making here?

This post tries to evoke pity for a man who had a most extradinary, luxurious life because he married well.

But no - poor man was frustrated, probably passed up a great career so ignore the dosh, pity him!

If I had not married my dh I would not have spent the last 10 years as a traiing spouse, being loney and frustrated. My choice, the consequences.

Publish his Will.

IamSTARVING · 19/07/2023 04:31

AvaCallanach · 14/07/2023 09:20

No, did I say that?

My point was, that Philip would far far FAR rather have been able to work in his field and earn his own money and it's a bit mean spirited to characterise him as a lazy racist wondering around "milking the cow" and laughing all the way to the bank, when the man gave up the career he loved and excelled in to serve the British people (as he saw it) which he then did for 70 plus years.

I am sorry but I really do not believe, even for a second, that there is self sacrifice for the great British public there.

You are over egging the pudding.

IamSTARVING · 19/07/2023 04:39

AvaCallanach · 14/07/2023 15:24

A)Almost anyone born in Europe in 1922 would have made similar remarks, including your great grandparents no doubt. Doesn't excuse them, but he was a product of his time. He just was in public an awful lot longer because he lived so long. I think back to 70s sitcoms and cringe at the casual racism of shows like 'it ain't half hot mum' and that one where the black man moved next door, shock horror. It was everywhere. Philip was by no means an exceptional person in terms of his attitude to difference. And if you read his list of racist comments, it includes statements like "British women can't cook" and a comment about Scottish people drinking too much, plus a comment about (white) Hungarians etc.

B) he retired at 95 years of age. That means he worked 30 extra years compared with Joe Public. And everybody's state retirement money is paid by my taxes.

I had two sets of grandparents, many great Aunts and various other older people in my life his age who never spoke the way he did.

They were aware of the dignity of others.

You see it a man of his time.

I see him as classist and elitist, more than likely a snob, who looked down his nose at others who were less than.

How ridiculous. Nobody is suggesting such a thing, but we only just found out he was receiving it! every single cost to the nation can be broken down per person and amount to very little, that's just a way to minimise and make it seem like less of a concern.

that's just a way to minimise and make it seem like less of a concern.

Brava!

Very well said.

Everything seems to only cost a penny with this crew.

Funeral - only a penny

State funeral- only a penny

Coronation - only a penny

2nd coronation in Scotaland - only a penny

Security - only a penny

Jublilee - only a penny

Castles- only a penny

Grants - only a penny

BUT

they bring in billions. Weird that!

This does not seem to happen with any other part of the economy.

Wish I could figure it out...

Boomboom22 · 16/07/2023 13:47

She is being paid they have just streamlined it so she is paid not directly from the public but I believe from the business profits of the duchy. But I personally would be happy for her to be paid just as any other royal, I like her think she's good, a dv ambassador, lighthearted and a bit more normal.

Streamlined my backside.

The greedy King has just taken the lot and shares less.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 17/07/2023 11:09

They hush up all royal wills Cathy, but I thought the "allowances" were supposed to be funded out of the Civil List/SG rather than being paid as an extra IYSWIM?

Will have to check though, as I could easily be wrong ...

They should not hush up royal wills.

We should not accept this.

Footballers get paid millions to kick a ball around that some poor child in a developing country stitched whilst getting paid £4 a day.

This is a defense of the payments made to the DoE over his lifetime?

That footballers get paid millions to kick a ball around that may or may not have been made in a sweatshop?

Prescottdanni123 · 19/07/2023 05:37

@IamSTARVING

Nah, just wondering if people get just as wound up over men getting paid millions and millions more for kicking a ball around with varying degrees of talent, while the person who made the essential football lives in extreme poverty.

It's unfair no matter who is kicking the ball.

I could very well get upset about that.

But it seems like a wild 90 degree turn on this thread...

The DoE gets paid massive money for life, secretly - but what about footballers?

It’s a guilded cage that some can’t even handle. We would have a head of state anyway and a monarchy that can trace its heritage back a thousand years gives us a lot of soft power globally.

You cannot put a price on what majesty gives this country compared to the dull, bureaucratic equivalent.

I’m piss poor and I’m not some flag waving royalist sycophant but I don’t resent that money paid to Philip. Especially when you consider what tax payer money goes to talentless deadheads like Tess Daly and Gary Linekar. He supported the Queen all her life and this country benefitted.

You, op, are the sort of person who counts the cost of everything and the value of nothing.

That is a big statement about the op without much to back it up.

In fact the op is questioning the value of the royal family versus the cost.

The op makes the opposite value /cost analysis that you make.

I am the same as the op.

It's not a cage. They can walk away anytime yet by and large don't which should tell you something

You cannot put a price on what majesty gives this country compared to the dull, bureaucratic equivalent.

Please expand and convince me this is more than romanticised drivel.

I don’t resent that money paid to Philip

I do all the time it remains unexplained and independently accounted for.

He supported the Queen all her life and this country benefitted.

Can you elaborate on how the country benefited?

FlouncetteLaFroth · 19/07/2023 22:10

I’m with you @AvaCallanach

He gave up everything he held dear for duty.

Unlike someone who thought himself above all that. From naval to navel gazing in a couple of generations.

And not a surprise to see the usual cries of he was racist.

Conveniently forgetting about Harry’s ventures into that playground of course….

Funny that.

FlouncetteLaFroth · 19/07/2023 22:17

Only if one of the men kicking the ball was a British royal.

The only one doing any kicking is the one probably kicking himself for making such a mess of his escape.

Cornishclio · 20/07/2023 08:30

Why is this being rehashed for goodness sake. Philip is dead now so completely irrelevant.

The sovereigns spouse does a huge amount of public service and are massive contributors to tourism. Charles and Camilla were in St Ives the other day and you couldn't move for people. They can't do a normal job so they should receive some financial benefit.

I get far more cross about having to pay huge inflated salaries to heads of councils, NHS trusts, energy companies,MPs and media people through my TV licence. They contribute nothing as far as I can see. I get no choice over paying for them either.

Philips repeated racist remarks aren't expunged just because someone else in the family was racist. Someone who has apologised and acknowledged it and admitted they still have work to do. Philip made multiple racist remarks over his life, please don't minimise his racism. The way you've written that implies you don't think any of it is a big deal. Well it is. He will be remembered as a man who repeatedly made racist remarks and never atoned for them.
