Are they considered close friends? And Gayle, Oprah's bestie, is she still on side H&M...she appears to have gone quiet.
Or has the now known lies from their Oprah interview changed their friendship I wonder?
It all seemed so pally but did it stand the test of time?

And "Triangle" - glamour, sex, intrigue!!
All aboard a North Sea ferry...

Yes hahaha, that was something else!

And Thorn Birds. That was pure sex. And religion. And nudity. And a priest grooming a young girl. Looking back it was disgusting, but I was agog as there was nothing like it on telly.

And then there's Bouquet of Barbed Wire. Another eye opener for me. A father obsessed with his daughter, an absolute mess of manipulation and cheating.

I think I grew up somewhat after watching these two!

Ohpleeeease · 13/07/2023 13:15

Bouquet of Barbed Wire! I don’t think it’s a drama that would be made now. It was so creepy.

LaMarschallin · 13/07/2023 14:12

I read the books of The Thorn Birds and BOBW but missed the tv adaptations.
I also had quite a few books based on tv series: The Liver Birds; Backs to the Land (anybody else remember that?); To the Manor Born; The Good Life (2 volumes); The Cedar Tree (many volumes) and - Triangle!
It was from that book I discovered that the engineer character played by Larry Lamb (hope I've got that right), on whom I doted, wore Eau Sauvage aftershave.
I used to smell the testers in Boots and imagine he was near...
I cringe at myself now, of course.

It was quite scandalous. I can’t believe my mum let me watch. I was only about 10!!
I love this thread. So many programmes to remember. Does it make me sound old to say tv was better back then? There were so many programmes that would get the whole nation talking, like ‘who shot JR?’.

LaMarschallin · 13/07/2023 15:05

Can't do, because I'd say it too and I'm nobbut a stripling. Ahem.
I remember my mother's friend coming round to discover Who Shot JR (we had salt 'n' vinegar Chipsticks and Asti, so quite an event) and none of us had ever watched Dallas before!

In parts. But my god, when you look back at the likes of Love Thy Neighbour and Till Death Do Us Part, it's no wonder TV has moved on!

Samcro · 13/07/2023 15:33

try Hudson and Rex , imo its like old school tv

Ohpleeeease · 13/07/2023 16:05

Till Death Us Do Part (with some careful editing) might actually hold up quite well. It was meant to expose bigotry and it did. The trouble was, too many people identified with Alf Garnet instead of his “Scaaace Git” son in law.

The one I remember was Mind Your Language. Best of intentions, ended up being a beauty parade of racial stereotypes. Very awkward viewing.

Howsimplywonderful · 13/07/2023 16:06

A lot of 80’s television doesn’t stand up to modern viewing (the treatment of women)
and Americans (saving the world from themselves)

I love how no-one worries about entrapment, handling evidence or any police procedures in shows like Murder she wrote etc. too.

Roussette · 13/07/2023 16:11

Haha, yes, so true!

Ohpleeeease · 13/07/2023 16:13

Yes, little details like contamination of evidence and witness tampering…

Howsimplywonderful · 13/07/2023 16:17

I’m not a republician by any means but in Dirty Harry when he’s hauled over the coals for trying to find out where a serial killer has hidden a girl and the killer released as a result - I used to smile at Harry’s line ‘I’m all broken up about that man’s rights’

Aah yes fair point!! Someone else upthread mentioned the misogyny as well.

I used to teach EFL and nationalities do have stereotypical behaviour, though. Of course, nothing is 100% but I was able to guess most people's nationalities or the general geographical region, from their behaviour. Oh, those French eye rolls! 🤐 I mark international exams now, and I can usually guess the nationality from their writing as well.
I really loved my job. Fantastic students and they had me laughing from the moment I stepped into the class. I don't know anyone who teaches EFL, when the students want to be there (!), who doesn't enjoy it. Best job ever. 😆

eveoha · 13/07/2023 18:56

DOES ANYONE RECALL WATCHING ‘BIG JIM AND THE FIGARO CLUB’. ‘Before the world turned lax and sour’ 👍🏿☘️

I used to teach EFL to adults and hated it!! I guess one problem I had with it was I was it was evening classes so people were coming in tired from work. I also taught EFL to children and massively preferred it.

Gracewithoutend · 13/07/2023 19:24

Oh, that's a shame, @Gilmorehill . I used to do mainly daytime classes but occasionally did evening classes. Attendance could be a problem because of work shifts, etc. But I used to love it. It was in equal parts buzzing and draining. Lol.

I'd definitely go back and teach again if they ever reduced the paperwork and ridiculous meetings.

PollyThePixie · 13/07/2023 19:33

Can anyone else remember Take Three Girls. I was about 12 when it came out. I loved it.

I just had a look on YouTube @PollyThePixie, no recollection at all of the programme but I do remember the theme tune. Lisa Goddard was everywhere for a while, but that must have been one of her earliest appearances.

@Gracewithoutend it’s ok. It was a learning experience which allowed me to think about what I really wanted to do. I’m not sure I was mature enough then (21) to teach adults. Because I was forced to work with children in order to make enough money, I discovered a passion for education so all is good (apart from being overworked and underpaid!!).

Oprah WAS a friend of Weinstein as were many others who were influenced by him
She has spoken out many times, spoken to his victims and condemned what he did. If you choose not to believe her then that's your choice.
Compare and contrast with:

Charles who was a close friend of a paedophile, Peter Ball and wrote defending him after Ball had received a police caution. This is what he wrote to Ball ' I wish I could do.more. I feel so desperately strongly about the monstrous wrongs that have been done to you and the way you have been treated ' He even bought him a house to live in. The report into Ball's, Bishop of Gloucester, despicable behaviour found that Charles's behaviour could have been interpreted as trying to lobby in Ball's favour. Well knock me down with a feather.

Andrew continued his friendship with Epstein after concerns had been raised about him.

Charles friendship and actions with Ball as with JimmyS is rarely mentioned and even more rarely discussed. Why would that be.?

Oh but Oprah.

Well said. The double standards reeks here.

Gracewithoutend · 13/07/2023 23:08

Haha. I get you, Gilmore. But I'm glad you found something you enjoyed in the end. It makes impecuniousness a bit easier to bear. 😉
