Abolishing the Monarchy

tigger2022 · 19/06/2023 14:42

A few people on different sides of the debate have expressed an interest in discussing/debating this, so I thought we could give it a go…

Abolishing the monarchy?

My personal view: I used to be a staunch republican but have since completely changed my view. I think the constitutional monarchy is a slightly odd system, but seems to do the job, and I can’t think of another country’s system which is actually preferable. I also find myself less & less convinced by republican arguments…

Thoughts?

We have Republican supporters, supporting the privatisation of the British health care and abolish the monarchy! 😂

No we don't. MNHQ have asked us recently to stop goading each other. Please don;t misrepresent other posters and intentionally create arguments over things that are not being said.

You are deliberately misrepresenting what I have said and then writing a goady post about it. Please stop doing that. Nobody here has said they want privatisation of the NHS. I have said some who are fortunate enough are able to access private care while others who cannot go without completely. We have an awful health system that means some get care, some don;t, some go private, some can't and go without. I said this in direct response to the comments regarding care in the US being about what you can afford. The same can be said for the UK

CathyorClaire
You get so much pleasure from saying how awful they all are. If the institution is abolished you’ll be denied this pleasure (though maybe you can find a few rich poshos to direct insults ar instead).

This is a civil thread, or at least it was. I think you are aiming to change that Hmm

@CathyorClaire and I disagree on some things, but she has always been pleasant and doesn't insult other posters. AND she has an opinion she is entitled to express

Barbadossunset · 22/06/2023 13:32

Sure - CathyClaire is very civil:
Well, she dicked about at Jigsaw; morally bankrupt buffoon; workshy duo; the family said circuses celebrate fight like rats in a sack and that's before we get onto the enormous unearned privileges they enjoy. Etc

I don’t consider those comments very civil.

You don;t seem to understand that on a forum the civility is towards the other posters. We are allowed to criticise public figures a much as we like. You are not allowed to make personal remarks about the posters on the thread. @CathyorClaire can criticise the royals and remain civil to other posters, which she does.

Really? You obviously haven’t spent much time on politics threads on here.

Iwantcakeeveryday · 22/06/2023 13:55

What I am saying is, that is the interpretation of the guidelines. When they say remain civil, they mean towards other posters. It does not mean you cannot criticise pubic figures, which is allowed and not considered uncivil.

You must mean different politics threads than the ones I am on and have been for years and years

Never personal attacks, just civility

Exactly! I criticise the current government endlessly. I do not attack posters, in fact I'm so busy concentrating on the content of a post, I barely see who posted it!

oldwhyno · 22/06/2023 14:22

It's a good system. Not perfect, but it works better than alternatives.

"It is undemocratic" No it's not. A democracy is a form of government where the people have the authority to deliberate and decide legislation. That's exactly what we have.

People need to let go of their petty jealousy of people in big houses with jewelry. The royal family and their wealth belong to our country, not the other way around.

You think people who support a democratically elected head of state are jealous of their jewels and wealth? How about just repulsed by how they came to get it?? We own the royal family??

Roussette · 22/06/2023 14:27

Jealous? That is just bizarre. For about 1,001 reasons

I liked Boris before he met Carrie. People change. The old Boris that got stuck in a zipwire is the Boris I like. The lovable buffoon.

Iwantcakeeveryday · 22/06/2023 14:56

If you are hostile towards the British monarchy, you need to see a balance view of things

What makes you think anyone unsupportive of a monarchy don;t have a balanced view?

Gracewithoutend · 22/06/2023 15:13

@Novella4
Royalists would have an advantage as the older and whiter you are the the more likely you are to vote - ans the more likely you are to be a royalist.

What do you mean by "whiter"? 🤔 What are the degrees of whiteness you're assessing me by?

Can I ask you to read this. An interesting read about exactly what royal patronages do for Charities.

You might just change your mind after looking at this research which involved a database with 3 million entries.

https://giving-evidence.com/2020/07/16/royal-findings/

Royal patronages of charities don’t seem to help charities much

___________________________ A note about Royal charity patronages re the passing of HM Queen Elizabeth II: HM Queen had ~600 patronages. They were not all charities: many were parts of the military…

The fat cats billionaires who pay no tax are the ones you should be complaining about - these people abolished the EU UK membership and we have a useless Brexshit.

I do. Continually. As can be evidenced by my presence on politics threads.

What material? The report I linked?

It took me a long time to read it.
You obviously haven't even looked at it. Apologies if that is not what you are referring to.
